MPlayer unfortunately doesn't work with all DVDs and the version that actually did make the movie play as a background image hasn't been updated in over a year, so that's not really an option over here.
DVDesktop actually worked very well for me and seems like a great program, but I have two "out of the box" issues with it:
1) It's too expensive. For a program that does one thing that I won't use all that often, I can't justify spending $20. This isn't to say that the program doesn't perform well or seem to have had a lot of hard work put into it. To request 1/6 the cost of an entire operating system for one missing feature (DVD Player really should have this feature built in) is asking more than I care to pay.
2) Having some basic features (e.g. the Main Menu button) ferreted away in a separate menu rather than on the main remote window makes it seem as if a little more UI work needs to be done before this is really ready for retail.
Maybe I'm just being extremely picky and stingy? Well, I don't expect it to be free (maybe $5-9?) and I don't expect the feature set to be perfect (especially if the price were lower), but for me these two items prevent me from plunking down any money for now. Since the demo abruptly coughed up a "pay or get out" message, I think I'll walk away unsatisfied and hope for a better experience in the future.

I've downloaded this update from all three locations. When Stuffit Expander processes the file, it produces nothing.
