I love this app... it's quite beautiful and really adds life to the desktop. I love seeing a realtime night sky after dark (with the waxing or waning moon and all the constellations in place)... And witnessing daybreak occur while I am working early is refreshing... Almost as good as my windows!
Not sure if these issues below are correctable while maintaining the current detail and efficiency of the program.. but that's what these MU reviews are for right?
-CPU usage seems to be a problem... It is often at the top of my Activity Monitor List. I do understand the detail of this app... maybe this can't be resolved?
-Stylistically, I do think the contrast of the "sky" brightness from screen top to bottom is nice... but possibly a little too exaggerated for my longitude... I am in Pennsylvania USA and at noon (in early spring mind you), my screen is still about 3/4 black to very very deep dark blue. I think allowing a brighter day would make dusk and dawn all the more dramatic when the color and brightness transitions.
-Might there be a way to antialias the sun and moon imagery? The sharp-pixel edges take a jab at the otherwise natural beauty of the view. Possibly an option to hide the sun and moon also... although that would go against the astronomical correctness of this app.
-Also the option to choose a static direction of the view, without the timed pans and all.. not a big deal of course.. just a suggestion!
I have enjoyed Konfab since it's initial release... and now it's even better with the Exposé (aka Konsposé) feature... I can see my currently playing track on one corner of my desktop... and the online status of all my client websites subtlety displayed on another... and i hit my Function key i assigned next to my Exposé hotkeys.. and voila... I now see my local weather forecast and Weather Channel radar, my stocks, my to-do list.. all kinds of helpful little items. Back when Mt. St. Helen's was acting up, I had the webcam there in a little window in Konsposé, so I sometimes would see the steam and smoke clouds rising from the crater before the news channels caught wind of it.
I don't know the future of Konfabulator when Tiger arrives... Apple unfortunately seemed to have had every legal right to do what they did, but I admit I got a heavy queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach when I first caught sight of Dashboard and all its Widgets. My second thought on seeing Dashboard was "nice," but my first response was "they didn't..." Sure, Apple was behind the Desk Accessories back in the day... but I credit Arlo and the Konfab team for being the first to bring that idea back with such style and usability.
I second the request on transparency % toggle.... along with the ability to control the app via keyboard shortcuts... at least to pause and restart the watch.. even if it's just the spacebar when the app is in the front ( a la Quicktime Player)
All in a lunch break, I managed to coast over Io's surface as I watched the sun and earth appear over the horizon... I increased speed and reached Earth in seconds... and glided into the atmosphere (flying over the green and blue texture of Earth with blue sky overhead). I soon decided to fly up to the moon... and as I neared it, I noticed a small speck floating over the surface... as I got closer, I was able to click on the 'speck' to see what it was. It was the Apollo 11 Command Module! So, in real-time, I was able to fly up to a fully-rendered derelict Apollo 11 CM, complete with U.S. flag decals and multi-directional thrusters... a fun little easter egg.
Sure, there are minor bugs (trying to 'straighten out' your view after locking or tracking an item, hitting C to center on a target and occasionally being warped twelve kazillion light years from anything), but these little glitches are rare and unintrusive.
Celestia is real-time scientific accuracy with the simplistic controls of a video game. Perfect for hobbyist astronomers like myself. Rock on Chris.
It seems like SS is on the way to becoming the flagship theme-changing app.
The one thing that made me disable it, was the fact that even though I had no themes activated in it, it still added intense drop shadows to my 10.3 menu items and Konfabulator Widgets... which... although a small issue, made for a bad GUI experience.
Other than that.. It seems to be great... Looking forward to the update

Overall a great desktop app! Thank you!
