Cookie

Grandpa John reviewed on 08 May 2012
It works well when I am given the privilege of using it, even though I have already paid for it.

It is no longer available in the App Store which is where I bought it so I downloaded from the author's web site. It will no longer recognize my registration and it has lost all my preferences. So, I am outta here!

Path Finder

Grandpa John reviewed on 16 Apr 2012
This one looks really interesting! However, I am wondering if they have taken care of the bug that prevents files names and information in list views being updated until you either log out and in again, quit PF and launch it again or restart the computer. This irritating behaviour has been with PF since its launch and it is a problem that is not shared with the Finder.

Excuse me but I have had a license to use PathFinder from the first day it was released. This is an issue that has bugged me and I'd like to find an answer for it. It could be that some other resource is messing with PF, but I'd really like some help with it. Your very strange hostile response really doesn't cut it and from the tone of it, I think you may need some help yourself.

Switch

Grandpa John reviewed on 27 Mar 2012
This is very cool! For all its merits, Safari has a very bad habit of not being able to handle many web links with imbedded Java scripts. It just sits there and does nothing. With Switch, instead of selecting a web address and copying it then launching Chrome or Firefox and pasting the address into its bar, I can just click on Switch and away it goes. Thank goodness at least Chrome and Firefox in my experience, have the ability to handle just about any javascript that is thrown at them.

Apple Safari

Grandpa John reviewed on 12 Mar 2012
I sure hope this version fixes my problem!

What happens with my copy of Safari 5.1.3 is that every day at almost the same time Safari deletes all the thumbnails in the Top Sites page and launches without my command the "Quick Start" pages of two Extensions that I run; Invisible Hand Forward and 1Password. This is most annoying. I then have to do a cleanup of this unwanted activity that takes about 12 to 20 minutes out of my productivity time.

I can't seem to find anyone else that has this happen, so maybe I am totally alone in confusing nastiness.

;o) Not sure what that means either. If you mean do I reset or empty cache, before it happens, the answer is no. I am just sitting watching something and bang - it happens without me doing anything.

Safari 5.1.4 does not offer any satisfaction I'm afraid. Same behaviour as before. I am now about to go back to the old standby, OmniWeb.

Garmin WebUpdater

They have done it again with this updater! Version 2.1.2 which is listed here as being released today is the same one I downloaded from the Garmin Web site on December 21st last year! Hello!

Tex-Edit Plus X

Grandpa John reviewed on 20 Oct 2011
Hey! Tom Bender is back!

So glad to see you old friend. I had relegated TEP to the back burners when it became to darn slow with the current string of updates to OSX. Now it is back faster than ever.

It is still the best lean and mean solution to text manipulation needs.

PDF Browser Plugin

Grandpa John reviewed on 01 Jul 2011
I am having trouble here. With many of the pdf pages online, the Shubert plugin will return a PDF icon with a question mark. As soon as I remove the plugin I can read the file online just fine. I am using the latest version of Safari and this is the first time that the Shubert plugin does not work properly for me.

Adobe Reader
Grandpa John commented on 22 Apr 2011
I had only one use for Reader 9. It was to print out booklets and Reader 9 had a very handy Print window that would let you set up your booklet so it would print properly.

Now with Reader 10 I just don't get it! Reader 10 has done away with the ability to set up and print booklets. So I have absolutely no use for it. I guess I for one will stick with Reader 9 for booklet printing, but I'll continue to use Preview for reading PDF files.

TechTool Pro

Grandpa John reviewed on 15 Mar 2011
I really don't understand why critics continue to blast at TechTool Pro because it is more expensive than DiskWarrior and more complex. You are comparing Apples to grapefruit. DiskWarrior is a one trick pony that does what it does very, very well! It can rescue a volume with a badly damaged directory.

TechTool Pro however checks the directory and repairs it and goes on to check the RAM and Video card, and will optimize not only the files but the free space as well, plus it will perform a clone backup, will monitor your network looking for questionable activity. On top of this it will recover data that has been lost, and the finally it will build a separate bootable volume that can act as an emergency disk that has the most needed utilities on board (and has space for DiskWarrior as well). And as has been mentioned it will work in the background checking for problems that are occurring with your files.

Add this up and then add the cost of other software that can do all the things that TechTool Pro can do and you have one of the most outstanding values that can be found for the Mac.

Spell Catcher X

Grandpa John reviewed on 22 Dec 2010
I am with Espiridion. Spell Catcher has been around since around Mac OS 8 and has been indispensable for me. It is always working in the background and has built in dictionaries and Thesauri to draw on. It can also scan the Internet for other resources. The version for Snow Leopard now works with 64bit applications and is fast and accurate. Great work Evan!

I have been using the previous version for some time in Snow Leopard and just installed version 2.4. Now every time I try to use the preferences settings the application crashes. What gives?

iKey
Grandpa John had trouble on 22 Jan 2012
I posted a troubleshoot report yesterday and for some reason it was deleted.

However, I am glad to report that the problem (two launches of the same application - and having to quit the launched application twice) has been solved by simply trashing the preferences of the previous version and rebuilding the settings of the new one. Since 1Key is extremely easy to set up and modify, this was not a big deal.

One Key
Grandpa John had trouble on 22 Jan 2012
This version of one key has a terrible bug! With every application I launch with it, it launches the it twice. So when I hit the FKEY I have set for Safari, for instance, I have two Safari applications running at the same time. I didn't even know you could do this! I certainly don't know why anyone would want to do it.

Grandpa John had trouble on 20 Jan 2012
Major bug that I noticed with the first version that I put to service (1.3). Trying to permanently trash bookmarks that are in the trash folder does not work. This version (1.3.1) does not work either. The result is I have a load of bookmarks in the trash folder that I can do nothing with. The help file says: use the "delete" command in the menu (nope), right click the trash icon (nope) use the delete key (nope) use the "-" icon at the bottom (nope). Sorry, but nothing works!

Grandpa John had trouble on 15 Nov 2011
I was unable to download this newest version using the MacUpdate link. The pinwheel just kept spinning. However I was able download it by copying this link to Speed Download:

ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/lemkesoft/gc7_build338.dmg

And the download went perfectly.

DiskWarrior
Grandpa John had trouble on 04 Mar 2011
This updater is not able to create a CD for me. Everything went fine until the very end when it quit, kicked out the disk and said that there were errors and the disk could not be used. This happened three times and I gave up. I seem to remember this happened the last time I tried to update.

Then I remembered how to get a copy regardless. I had the updater write an image of the updated disk to my hard disk, and force-quit the application instead of quitting it normally. This prevents the updater from erasing the image file. I was able to retrieve it from the .tmp folder (invisible) and copy it to the desktop. So at least I have a working copy of DW4.3.

I don't know why I have trouble creating a DW CD, my CD/DVD burner works fine for other things.

Any ideas?
