Hazel

Gcoghill reviewed on 01 Mar 2012
I've been participating in the 3.0 beta, so I have some experience with the new version. I was a long-time user of the app prior to 3.0 and this update brings much of the functionality that I was looking for in earlier versions along with lots of great new stuff.

The developer was very responsive to the feedback of us beta testers, so I feel the 3.0 release is a very solid release, worthy of both the upgrade for existing users as well as a full license for new users.

Any hangups I had with pre-3.0 versions are gone. This is still a bit of an advanced app for the novice Mac user, but with a little bit of time and trial and error, any Mac user could start using this even just for some of the basic functions. Once you get more advanced, Hazel will keep up with you.

Having "current time" criteria as well as the new nested rules is a huge improvement and will streamline your rule setups immensely. Rule creation, preview and testing is much improved in this release.

One of my top must-have Mac apps just got better. Can't recommend this highly enough for automating stuff on your Mac.

@Sigil - contact the developer, he'll be sure to get back to you. That said, the new version will continue to do what you need, but you may find yourself using more of Hazel's features as I feel the rules are a bit easier to construct now. And you can always just hold off on the upgrade until compatibility forces you :)

You could try his forums, it might already be there. Dev would be glad to answer I'd think.

PopSearch Safari Extension

Gcoghill reviewed on 14 Feb 2012
Great extension! Being able to Tab over to the search engine list dropdown menu is key, so one can search without taking their hands off the keyboard.

Great job, thanks for making this available!

What an awesome app to watch YouTube videos in the background while working. And free? Good stuff.

So is 3.9 reserved for Smart Scroll users on OS X 10.7?

Super handy to keep an eye on your email inbox for info junkies like myself. The Spam button itself is worth the install. I've gladly donated to the developer for this.

Growl

Love me some Growl. As an info junkie, you can't beat it. Highly configurable, and the companion apps for iPhone Howl and Prowl) for push notifications make it even better.

I'll gladly pony up for the 10.7 App Store release.

I'd love to use this extension over the plugin, but the lack of a whitelist always sends me back to the plugin.

I have issues with the "open link in new window" command, just opens a new window in the background with the home page. Anyone else seeing this? I emailed the developer but got no reply to this issue.

Also, the contextual (right-click) menu seems to be missing some items such as "open image in new tab" etc. I feel like this version is a step down from the beta.

Smart Scroll
Gcoghill had trouble on 23 Mar 2011
Does anyone else experience issues with Smart Scroll's Grab Scroll not working with either Echofon or Twitter for Mac?

It's very odd that the two apps that I have issues with are both Twitter clients. It's probably just a coincidence.

I see this issue in Reeder for Mac as well. I've been in contact with developer, who said he was going to look into the scrolling situation with these apps, but that was a month or so ago. Hoping to see this addressed soon, as I use both apps quite a bit.

The developer is working on fixing this issue currently. I just tested a beta version and it's working now. No idea when it will be released.

Apple FaceTime
Gcoghill had trouble on 20 Oct 2010
Adding favorites is buggy, seems to be related to phone numbers in 555.555.5555 format - results in just the number showing up, not the name.

Otherwise launches OK, haven't given it a test yet for actual chatting.

Gcoghill had trouble on 16 Aug 2010
Interesting app, but the scrollbar click feature doesn't play well with a Wacom tablet. Couldn't "unclick".

Haven't played with it further since it rendered my Mac unusable until I was able to disable it.

Sounds great, glad you were able to figure it out. Will give it another go once the fix is in place.

I tried unplugging the tablet, but that didn't fix it for me so I wasn't sure what was wrong.

Thanks!

UploadMe
Gcoghill had trouble on 24 Feb 2010
Crashes when hitting upload. Hoping to have FTP upload so I can save to my own web server. Or Flickr.

Needs ability to paste a screenshot that one has saved to the Clipboard.

Text editor needs to allow the text to be edited and to be able to move it.

Looks like it could be a handy little app though.
