djoPlayer

GIBlow reviewed on 02 Dec 2006
This application seems rather useless and unworkable. I got it because I was interested if it might have some simple movie-player controls that I like in MPlayer but don't always get to use with some .AVI movie files.

So I install this, and it never works right. First off: don't make "Full Screen" and "Always on Top" default settings. That's annoying and unnecessary. If I want to play anything full-screen, it's usually already set up to run fine on QuickTime or DVD Player. I don't want another one hijacking that usage. Un-check those options for default.

Second, it just doesn't work. Oh, it plays the video file fine...until I try to quit playing. Then it locks up and goes into permanent beach-ball mode until I finally have to Force Quit it. Three different times, I tried to play a movie and got a reasonably reliable play--it even had those controls I wanted for some AVI files in the first place. But ultimately, I can't trust a program that never shuts itself down and has to be Force Quit every single time. I don't know if this is an issue with the program every time or just because it's poorly written for a Tiger-operating system, but the result is the same: I trashed it.

Not surprising that developer never answers complaints or concerns, and just to illuminate anyone new to this: there's a reason why you only see all these positive reviews for the thing on his blog and other related sites. It's not because the positive experience reviews are lies or shills, but because he deletes and email-argues with anyone who tries to post any complaint or concern otherwise, so the only things that EVER make it online within his control are positive remarks.

Stick with macUpdate and any other site Watanabe DOESN'T have editorial control over. Sure, there might be some cynical remarks here, but at least they're not bowdlerized to death to make a sometimes-faulty app look like the next answer to Gnutella Heaven or something.
