Open Office is not a slam-dunk on compatibility with MS office, but for the price, it is a fantastic solution. Open Office sometimes changes the formatting when opening Excel documents, and the macro language is slightly different - which means that if you have macros written in Excel, they might not work when you open them with OO. Other than that, I like the compatibility with so many types of documents! If OO can't open it, I do not know what will! Also, it saved me from having to buy the latest version of MS office when I switched to Lion. OO is fully Lion compatibile, whereas my previous version of MS office is not.
Just an FYI, PDF merge is fully compatible with Lion (we have a free trial on our website so you can test). I was in contact with monteurtv, and unfortunately, she did not append her comment.
Chrome is one of my two favorite browsers (it competes well with Safari). It certainly faster than Safari, but the only thing it lacks (as far as I can tell) is good RSS support. Safari has these clean, parenthetical notifications that appear in your book marks bar. Chrome does not have this, nor does Chrome have an RSS reader. If Chrome had those two features, I'd give it a full 5 star rating. Obviously, there are Chrome extensions which allow some semblance of RSS reading - but upon installing those extensions, you need to consent to the fact that your private data could be shared with the developer...
