Not bad- I believe you may have done more work than is necessary here though. I like that you covered many great topics in a RSS style browser but the list is really long and static.
Now if you added an empty search field we could search for phrases or keywords eliminating maint of the list.
DeFacto multi platform support. Recovering Windows based data from dead or dying drives is a snap- hosed partition table? Not able to mount the drive from another OS due to problems, and so not able to recover files? This is the tool for you.
Its not an elegantly GUI'd app but that's not important really. This gets the job done efficiently and its free. Can't beat that.
I have used SpiderOak for a while, almost since .Mac's backup and sync to remote storage was 86'd. I don't back up a lot of files to network resources, and for some simple availability to other platforms I just use DropBox.. But SpiderOak gives you the ability to set syncs up on a regular basis. Almost like ChronoSync does but this is a hosted service and not a local or LAN drive. DropBox is a manual process or drag and drop or you can write directly to the DB folders.
That's not what SpiderOak is about. It is a backup solution and it works well, doesn't have stability issues are cause headaches on my computers (Mac or PC)
Normally I think I'm somewhat paranoid about leaving files 'out there' and having additional applications or services running has been problematic in the past as well.
DropBox is a very different story. It is THE way to easily get your files to the cloud securely and without hassle. The application provided here makes quick access a snap and it is not intrusive at all. I like the simplicity of the workflow and using the service I can easily share and work with files from my iPad or computer. Very good!
Ya know I had used Thoth for a while, not to pirate but to actually take place in conversations and share ideas. It can happen. But then one day I got a taste of the author's bad attitude and god complex. Really I paid for the application and asked for a ground level of support, nothing lofty- and he snapped at me.
You know what, I don't need that from anyone. And so today I find myself fondly remember the application for what it was and still might be, a solid and good newsgroup client. But beyond that I refuse to try it again as long as the original author is tied to it. I'll take my money somewhere else where customer service is as important as the quality of code.
My review of the author is not the same as my opinion of the software.
Hats, hats and more silly hats. Its not fun anymore- there's too much garbage and it has completely departed from the game its supposed to be.
I paid for my copy a couple of years ago and I still resent it. In the beginning it was awesome and a great teamwork game. You could 'lone wolf' your game but it wasn't as profitable. Now they throw in crazy hats, jars of urine (for throwing around), more hats.. and I think that's all. Its free now and its still not worth it to me.
There are still some servers that don't allow the foolish garbage and I might play those but otherwise I've uninstalled it. Mac or PC.. its .. all about silly hats.
Great idea- a little too 'involving' for setup. Yes the author has ample documentation but really a package and front end beyond applescripts could easily make this a more polished product that I wouldn't mind paying for. In general I would say this is a 4.0 but the convoluted setup (managing a new google account is a work around not the solution) makes Ease of Use drop the rating considerably.
Still I believe the thinking and stability is solid. Good work!
Following up again on the progress of this app. I'll say its very advanced compared to its more humble beginnings.
Dragging files into a window reveals its path, color schemes are somewhat supported, and the speed and stability of the app are right where they should be.
What is needed now? Well perhaps nothing is needed per say but a nice to have would be a way to close a particular pane without having to lose the whole window. Also I would like my preferred view to be savable as my color scheme is. The ability to alter my current layout of panes would be more important when making changes. Excellent application. I'm ready to pay.
Works well enough is this is all you have to write to NTFS with however as noted by Devs, the USB transfer can suffer when slower devices are connected. My addition to this claim is, "or not" This is a much slower write speed to any NTFS volume be it a high speed USB thumb drive or a USB 2.0+ external. Buut, what are you going to do about it.. Good product, but the 'free' version is trivially limited.
