Look at the apps: Exhaust, delayedlauncher, and startupizer. Also applescripts can delay application launch times at startup so the icons will be arranged in the proper order (same thing this app does with a 20 second interval.) Truly there are free ways to rearrange your icons.
Example of applescript:
---
delay 0.3
tell application "alfred"
launch
end tell
delay 0.3
tell application "hyperswitch"
launch
end tell
----
That is the basics of it, put all your login items in that script and place it as a startup item and remove the items you currently have in there as the script will be doing all the launching at startup. If you really know what your doing you might even be able to do this with a launch agent.
Thanks for the response, I honestly have no interest in this app as I do not care about the order of my menubar apps, however I once did and settled that perfectly with my applescript example above.
There are free options available that do what your app does (of course not everything, but the main gist) and if you want to be able to compete with the more developed paid apps like startupizer, I think many people here at MU would appreciate a trial version or some sort they can grab w/o having to go through MAS. If you offered a trial, most here at MU would purchase your app instead of startupizer off of MAS simply because you offered them an alternative. I am speaking for many people but from my time here, most MU members hate MAS and will support developers who make a concerted effort to supply them with a trial, even if your program is inferior. I obviously can't tell as I am unable to try your app or startupizer since both are on MAS.
Haven't personally tried this app, but I am happy/proud to see a dev who has made software people seem to like (4 & 1/2 stars) and continues to keep it free and off MAS.
If you want a trial visit the dev's page. October 8th, I believe they posted a link to download a demo version of the app w/ a ten item limitation. Version 5, but not 5.0.1 as far as I know.
Just as a note, I did buy 1.3 even though I did not think I really needed the new features, just have been using the software for a long time, it's worth 1.99$.
Unfortunately I found it uses double the ram as version 1.2.2 (latest version before MAS). Just be warned, I bought it and went back to the pref pane. I didn't find anything special about 1.3. They bloated a lightweight background app imo.
I would be interested to hear if this really makes much of a difference. I have not tried this product but I have tried the two other products offered by the same company and both deserve outstanding marks, hopefully VMOptimizer can be as useful as iDefrag and iPartition. Apparently VMO uses some of iDefrag's technology.
I have owned OL since it's first release. The app is extremely flexible, lightweight, and powerful. I have tried many other window switching apps and none compare feature or price wise to OL. Now with tab support it is even more flexible. Layout options can be customized to your liking as can a plethora of hotkeys.
I don't think anyone here will argue that OL isn't a great app, but what makes it so spectacular is the active development and openness of it's dev. Whenever I have a request, I can drop an email and I soon receive a reply and sooner rather than later the feature request is implemented! I could go on all day listing off the great features of OL but try it out for yourself.
Great app + Great dev = Many happy customers!
Thank you for listening to our requests and making the best window switching app even better! I can't say enough positive remarks about this app, it truly is amazing in many regards.
Oh yeah, you can try it before you buy it!! I told you the dev was a good guy. ;)
Alfred as it stands is a very intuitive app launcher and spotlight "front end" so to speak. Without the powerpack it is feature deprived and you would be better off imo sticking with Quicksilver. Even with the powerpack it has a pretty UI all around and can definitely do a lot more but functionality is still rather basic. It's important to remember that this is only version 0.9 and the developers are very active. There will be a developer API and I believe the app will continue to progress at a rapid pace, hopefully. Benefit over Quicksilver is the fact that it uses less resources and is more responsive but then again less powerful. QS is open source and although being developed very actively right now, that could drop off as it is the nature of open source software although QS has a large following. Development of Alfred could come to a stand still one day too though, we have seen many shareware apps abandoned.
QS and Alfred work differently, whatever workflow you prefer then go with that. If you like how the "basic" Alfred looks and functions you will love the power pack features but even then the app has not reached maturity. I love QS but I feel Alfred has a lot of potential if it continues to be developed at this pace. Dev's are responsive and that is a perk of having paid for an app. QS help is readily available as well though, especially now. Really can't say one is better than the other as they are completely different. I like both, I just need Alfred to be a bit more powerful than it currently is even with the power pack so I'm looking forward to later releases.
Try them all, see which you prefer, that is the benefit of having so many options. Just as a note, I have tried Launchbar but do not like it at all. Many love it though so give it a try.
Currently I use Alfred until I run into a situation where I need to pull out Quicksilver to perform more complex tasks. A predicament I am faced with since I want to like Alfred very much and the fact that it is lightweight but it still has a ways to go. Sorry for the rant and hopefully this helps someone.
Winzip stick to what you do, windows. The mac side is covered. Way too many free alternatives and great shareware apps already available, namely BetterZip.
Thanks for your interest in developing mac software but please develop something unique and needed. You will probably have better luck putting this on MAS to catch new scared windows converts.
Hotkeys don't stick... Pretty hard to test an app w/o those features plus has anyone figured out a way to "tab" or move over to the right-panel to fill in all the note details w/o having to leave your keyboard... i.e. no mouse... Thanks, dev, please look at hotkey bug, I am on 10.6.2 mbp late '08. Thanks, I thought this app was dead... good to see an update!
Any of the little applets that call for authorization crash on SL. All the other simple ones like "home.app," "delete.app," and "up.app" work. Even "server.app" works. It's those that call for permission that crash about a second after the permission prompt arises. Fix that and they are 10.6.1 ready.
Everybody's tun tap working with 10.6? I get it to "stick" for 1 minute max... It says connected to tun0 but after a couple minutes it no longer works... well it says' it does "connected" but no net stat shows no input or output, websites can't connect etc... Would love if anyone has a clue how I can fix this or if you have ran into the same problem. I don't think it is with viscosity but 10.6?.?.? Thanks.
