TechTool Pro

Daniel-Alex-Finkelstein reviewed on 14 Mar 2011
Though it has a plethora of features for testing and, sometimes, fixing hardware and filesystems, the eDrive feature is precarious. Sometimes it can create the eDrive, sometimes it can't. Sometimes it can see the eDrive from a previous version, sometimes it can't. Once an eDrive has been created and is visible as both a bootable drive and manageable by the TechTool Pro program on the 'main' system disk, you're in good shape—but don't expect on that always being the case.

The support forums are not interactive at the Micromat site and most of the knowledgebase articles are quite old (version 4.x). Tech support takes a very long while to respond to support queries both by email and through the difficult-to-find web interface.

Micromat had a rapid-fire back-and-forth email tech support with me shortly after I posted the review, so I withdraw the criticism that they're unresponsive. They did acknowledge the knowledgebase was out of date but will be updated soon; I hope they add user forums, as well, so we can contribute our experiences and solutions.

A criticism of the support: either through my own lack of clarity (highly possible) or their misunderstanding—or both—proposed solutions either weren't possible with my hardware or didn't address the problems I had. In the end, I solved the different problems for the two systems that were upgraded. I hope to post the methods in the forum in the future.

Skype

Daniel-Alex-Finkelstein reviewed on 27 Jan 2011
Skype did reduce the screen real estate for the first non-beta version (5.0.0.7980) over the betas, however, it's still larger than the 2.8 series and doesn't follow the Mac multi-window UI conventions.

Some issues: when pausing iTunes during a call, the completion of a call doesn't always return the volume of iTunes back to its original level. When calling a person in the Address Book, you select a number and a person yet while in the call only the number is shown in the call window, not the associated name(s).

Update: SpamSieve 2.8.7-b2 doesn't crash. Still waiting on DragThing (and a response from Rogue Amoeba).
