I test a bunch of PDF compression apps and decided this was the best one for me.
Price is great. Interface is much better than others. Performed better for compressing ebooks than mac quartz filters (free) but not as well as PDF Shrink ($35). Difference was about 10% either way.
I compared this against several other apps/techniques for compressing ebooks and Shrink pretty consistently resulted in 10% smaller files. (72 dpi, low quality, for iPad)
Whether that is enough to justify $35 more than Quartz filters (free) or more basic app such as Squeeze ($2) is up to you.
As I've continued to try compressing different files that have I haven't been able to get good results any other way, I can say that PDF Shrink performs far better than the others on poor-quality scanned materials. For example, a particular 100MB black and white scanned file, no matter the settings, all other apps I tried compressed the file to a tiny ~8MB (even at 600dpi) none of which were practically readable.
PDF Shrink, at the highest quality settings, produced a 50MB that appears to be identical to the original. I have to say, though the interface is not attractive, the myriad of settings can really let you optimize the process to the situation.
If you aren't happy with the results of the less expensive alternatives, PDF Shrink is probably your best shot.
I asked about the release notes for v1.5.5 on the cultured code forums and got this response from Mick:
The update makes the non-MAS distribution Gatekeeper-compatible in anticipation of Mountain Lion. The in-app update will be released in coming days (to coincide with a MAS incremental update).
Gridiron Flow 2.0.5 Essentials is the current version. Also, the Essentials version is free. 3 subscription-based add-on services are available for $10/mo each or $20/mo for all.
This seems like a capable application on it's own. Typical of programs of this sort, the depth of features and advanced methods of illustration professionals makes the tool seem overly complex to casual users like me. This feels like a pro tool and possibly an alternative to Adobe Illustrator. If you are not a pro, I would suggest you look at Sketch, which is much more intuitive for non-pro users.
Something that will be very important to many would-be users is that this tool is not a native Mac app. It does not look or operate like a native app. It requires X11, which is a *NIX window system.
If you are comfortable with apps like Gimp, I think you would be happy with this too. Otherwise, you may want to try some of the Similar Software suggestions above.
Gorgeous app that fits my workflow well. I own QuickCal too, which is very nice for adding and listing events, but it doesn't add enough context for me. When I'm scheduling an appointment, I find it helpful to see the monthly calendar and what else I have going on before and after.
It is pricey though. I would have bought it sooner if I hadn't *really* tried to work with (the much less expensive) QuickCal. Worked out for both developers, I guess, since both got paid.
Fantastical has never crashed on me nor shown any other signs of instability.
This update process did take a while. There is a popup saying it may take an hour or more. Believe it. Here are a few other things that I wish I knew before I started:
1. Update your MacOS through Software Update first. Until I did this, I had vague errors about how my iPhone couldn't be restored and the iOS update would fail.
2. I got another vague error after 15 minutes of "backup" process which I think was a server busy. I was trying to update during the peak time on the day of release. Worked fine a couple or hours later.
3. Apparently iOS 5 doesn't require the iPhone to display the usual syncing message. Instead, you will see a normal home screen. IOW, it looks like it is done syncing, but check the iTunes screen! If it shows that it is still updating, don't disconnect your iPhone! Wait until *iTunes* says the process is complete.
4. After the update is (really) completed, you will see a series of instructions on the iPhone requiring the setup or dismissal of iCloud services.
After several attempt, my 3GS was updated correctly and appears to be operating normally. Good luck!
