I just received the game the other day and I am quite pleased with it. The storyline is a bit cliche, but your character fits well into it. There are some parts that are quite gory also. It goes without saying that the faint of heart should not play this game.
The graphics are of course top-notch, and this game is even more demanding than Doom 3 on my Dual 2Ghz G5!
The sound design is also very good, much better in my opinion than Doom 3. I can actually predict ambushes by listening to the chattering of the enemy.
A couple of complaints however:
1)The widescreen function does not work, the option is there, but it does nothing.
2)I don't believe this version is aware of multiple processors, I'm not 100% positive on this but it might explain why my G5 is running this slower than Doom. This seems silly since it's running the same engine as the current Doom 3, which is aware of multiple processors.
3)I've had one freeze-up, the same damn problem that plagued the early Doom 3 release. My entire computer freezes up, I can't even force-quit. I have to reboot completely.
HandBrake is by far the best DVD ripping app I've ever come across. The GUI is clear and concise, everything is contained in one program, and best of all, it's FREE! I was able to rip a DVD (that I own) at about 2x (2 hour movie took aprox. 1 hour) on my dual 2Ghz G5, which actually allowed me to watch the movie as it was being ripped onto my hard drive.
I haven't downloaded this because my school network blocks FTP transfers. But i was wondering, is this a base system operation where everything that is running is effected (AKA, a true Beowulf/cluster system) or is Xgrid only usable with programs written for it's 'environment'?
I just tried converting PAL->DV-NTSC with no sucess. After the program opens the progress window, it immediatly crashes. No error except apple's standard "do you want to send a bug report?" I have to trash the preferences every time b/c JES opens right up to the same project, and promptly crashes again. I'm using 10.3.9. I really wish I could use this program, i've found no other that converts PAL->NTSC without smearing.
