Apple Security Update

This Security Update 2011-006, on OS 10.6.8 made my external hard drive unreadable. It was plugged in and working when I updated my system (I use it with 2 partitions, 1 for Time Machine and 1 for manual back up) and after automatic reboot, the external drive was not recognized.

Is there anything I can do to restore my data ? Or has this happened to anybody else ?
