FWIW, my contention isn't whether or not this is 'good' or useful software.
But, rather that it is in fact, a 'calling card' or advertisement, for pay software.
There are those of us at MU, that think that this, and other 'free' software available at MU — are in the wrong category.
Not a big deal to change the category.
Yes, you offer the fully functional Classic Letterhead layout for no cost. But, this one item, is a subset of a greater collection. You are promoting something that is even 'more' useful. I see no shame in calling it demoware.
BTW, demoware is nearly always free. But, it is still... demoware.
Why is it wrong for companies to sell software, but it is OK to offer software for "free". Then, beg for money. Or more incredulously, 'demand' a donation.
Sure, 'your' time is worth something. If you spend a combined 80/wk, the two of you are working at this all week. You deserve to be paid.
Maybe sell each dot upgrade for five bucks? I'm sure each and every Mac running NeoOffice, could manage that expense. Have single and corporate accounts, maybe.
Or sell it at Mac App Store for 3-4 bucks per upgrade. [Personally, I'd much prefer paying with the App Store]
Maybe get corporate sponsors. "NeoOffice... brought to you by."
Apple 'Pages' sells for 15 bucks. But, then it doesn't get upgraded very often.
Just some thoughts. I think the license 'allows' you to make money. It's just that, the notion of a manditory "donation" seems bizarre.
[... everyone who sends feedback to us while the software is in beta will get a free lifetime license.]
And, by the above parsed message, you probably meant, that the 'free lifetime license' won't be 'gotten' by any 'non-participants' of the "'Disk Drill' beta feedback program".
Which probably means that everyone will 'pay' for a license of the stable version. Either with their time, or their money. Or, whatever else that could 'probably' mean.
I'm probably not completely convinced that there's not some sort of equivocating with the 'JR' version of the meaning of the word, 'free'.
But, all in all. I probably could mean, 'possibly' - in atleast one instance, of the word that I did use.
[The final stable release of Disk Drill will not be free.]
That wasn't so hard, was it? But, we travelled a long way to get here. ;-)
Perhaps you feel that others and myself were splitting hairs on your meaning of the word 'free'.
But, by continuing to insist that Disk Drill beta, is and will be 'free' forever, and never OVERTLY addressing whether or not Final versions of Disk Drill will be free or pay, you appeared to be downright avoiding that question. What else could be concluded?
All I wanted to know was what the approximate pricing on the final stable release might be. [I think that "Juan Alberto Martin", on your "Why free beta?" help page - and some others, here - wanted to know as well. ;-)]
In the interim, perhaps MacUpdate could create a new category for developers. Betaware.
Anyway.
I sincerely wish you lotsa success in your endeavors. After reading through your site, I find that some of the features seem quite interesting. And, of course I hope that you can price it competitively. ;-)
[FWIW, yes, a free Demoware version could be good marketing.]
Myself, "Baannongdong-kap", and "Ean", think that this app, as it is currently being offered — as a FREE beta app — is actually a demo.
There's no shame implied in demoware. So, why promote the fact that this beta software, is free?
Maybe I am conflating "free", with "final" (and, perhaps the other two are as well). Because, I fail to see why anyone would need to promote the word "free" with the word "beta". This may be the root of my so-called confusion with the word "free", when used with software.
I think I'm correct. But, that's just my opinion.
You are free to get upset that we have conflicting opinions. But please, don't kill yourself on my account.

Zelda: Mystery of Solarus DX
Thanks for your extra efforts.
Folders Factory
MU's price reads $0.99. The MacApp store reads $2.99
Indeed, both prices are low.
But, someone on the internet is wrong. ;-)

Looks like another Demo, that's slipped into the Freeware category.

Disk Drill
GET IT NOW!
It's absolutely FREE while beta...
I've seen this 'free while beta' before. as soon as it 'has gone stable'. A 'third party' will buy Cleverfile's IP.
Then, 'Data Drill' will quickly become commercial software. Surprise!
Unpaid beta software testers hopefully will get a respectable discount from the new owners.

By 'third party', I probably meant 'you'.

But, this ONLY applies to participants' of the "'Disk Drill' beta feedback program". Yes?
[Once again, every downloaded copy of Disk Drill Beta will stay free forever.]
Yes, the 'Disk Drill Beta', will stay free forever. No equivocation there.
But. Once again. What of the STABLE version?
YES or NO. Will the 'Disk Drill Final' version be 'free', forever?

Think I'm wrong on this, then read what "Stickman67" thinks of Personal Brain, and the "ethically wobbly marketing technique" they're using.
