I’ve tried several anti-virus programs over the years – Norton (long ago), ClamXav, VirusBarrier. I did not like the impact of any of them on CPU and questioned their effectiveness. For several years, I've not used any anti-virus software.
However, due to the increase in the threat level, I’m now using Sophos on all 3 of our laptops. It’s impressive. Very low CPU usage, fast and very up-to-date virus updating. The initial scan takes awhile which is to be expected. It found 6 pieces of malware as attachments to SPAM emails. I'm glad to have them GONE. After that, subsequent scans are quite fast and I feel confident our computers are clear and well protected.
I own this software and originally rated it 4 STARS. After numerous issues and zero response to emails to the developer, I can only assume he has abandoned this program. I am dropping my rating to 1/2 STAR. Let the buyer beware!
I've been using this for about a year for local backups and to clone certain folders between my primary laptop drive and a backup laptop. Performing backups over a network requires manually mounting the backup laptop each time I want to do backups. That is a bit of a pain, but I understand.
I have an issue with Sync3 and have not received any response from Nobu, the Developer. The issue is that my Sync3 is set to auto-start and perform backups on Sundays. However, I instead of one version of Sync3 running, I get at least 2 versions of Sync3 open simultaneously each Sunday morning. There is only ONE version of Sync3 in my Application folder on my primary hard drive. I suspect the reason for the multiple versions has to do with the fact that my primary drive is cloned to 2 external backup drives. No other software I own does this.
After reading so many positive reviews, I find Word to be much slower and much more cluttered with the Ribbon and other menu bells and whistles than I expected. I think it may actually be slower than Word 2004 & 2008.
Outlook is an over-hyped and messy version of Entourage. I keep trying it and then go back to the basics - Apple Mail. And if you include Hungerford Software's Mailhub add-on for filing messages, Mail becomes the easiest, most effective and fastest email client around.
Powerpoint is fine. Excel is fine. The rest is a mish-mash of features and poor layout.
Even though See Finance has not yet been released as Ver 1, it is already a very good personal finance management program.
I'm a 25 year Quicken for Mac user that switched to iBank a year ago. I detested paying for Intuit's minimal upgrades, horrible tech support and refusal to create parity between the Mac & Windows versions. I researched and tested at least 5 different programs. I finally purchased and had great hopes for iBank. However, I've found that iBank has many frustrating quirks, design issues and actual bugs that have been identified but not fixed. iBank simply is not living up to its claim to be the "Gold Standard". It is so frustrating to use that I am looking at switching to See Finance.
See Finance is a fully featured, very FAST and robust financial management program. It is very user friendly and has an intuitive user interface. It handles transferring old Quicken files better than any other finance program. It connects easily with the bulk of banking institutions and handles downloads effortlessly and fast. Account reconciliation is as intuitive and easy as I could imagine (unlike iBank). Investment tracking is easy and fast. The report capability is awesome. Graphic charts make sense. This is a great program.
I'd like to add a comment... While I like a lot about SEE Finance, I have chosen to continue using iBank for the time being. Why?
iBank clearly has an important edge when it comes to handling transfers between accounts. For example, if I move $1,000 from my savings to my checking account online, both programs download the transfer correctly as an outflow in my savings account. However, only iBank automatically linked the corresponding inflow transaction in my checking account. I had to manually link it in SEE Finance by first changing the Category to indicate my checking account and then manually use the "Create Corresponding Transfer Transaction" command to add the transaction to my checking account. That is two manual steps to do something that iBanks does automatically.
The impact on me when I use SEE Finance is that I end up feeling uncertain every day as to whether I have correctly matched corresponding transactions. As a result, I waste time double checking... going back and forth between accounts to verify transfers because I do not trust that I have correctly manually handled linked them.
Perhaps there is a way to use See's Filters feature, but to be honest, I have yet to figure out how to use the Filters. It seems complicated.
My point is, iBank handles transfers smoothly and effortlessly. SEE Finance does not. This is really important from a user's point of view. I will opt to use the program that makes my DAILY LIFE EASIER every time. I hope they fix this issue soon.
This is great software. Well designed, gets the job done, and extremely helpful. I particularly appreciate that it alerts me now when new updates for my software are available. Occasionally, it is unable to download some update, but most of the time, it handles the downloads fast & transparently. And, the Macupdate website is a great resource.
I don't see the value in Mainmenu Pro. I own and enjoy using Mainmenu 2.1.2. When I look at the comparison between Mainmenu and Mainmenu Pro, it looks like a number of basic features included in Ver 2 (like the 3 maintenance functions) have now been moved to the Pro version. So, would someone explain why those of us who own Ver 2 would want to purchase an upgrade at all?
I've relied on Applejack for years. It is one of two methods I use to sort out nagging, Directory level issues with Macintosh computers. Applejack is reliable and foolproof. I love that you can run all of its options automatically including an automatic restart. My only wish would be that it could analyze and resolve font or preference corruption issues. Other than that, it is fabulous!
