Would I be correct to assume that the Yosemite public beta has broken MacPorts? I just typed "sudo port -v selfupdate" in the Terminal and the resulting error I got is as follows: Error: Current platform "darwin 14" does not match expected platform "darwin 13" Error: If you upgraded your OS, please follow the migration instructions: https://trac.macports.org/wiki/Migration OS platform mismatch while executing "mportinit ui_options global_options global_variations" Error: /opt/local/bin/port: Failed to initialize MacPorts, OS platform mismatch I guess I am off to that migration URL to see what is going on with MacPorts.

For those of you who are interested, it appears that MacPorts will not install or update on a machine running Yosemite Public Beta 1, Xcode 6 beta 5 and the latest version of the Command Line Tools.

I tried following the migration instructions on the aforementioned page, and in spite of that, whether I use the MacPorts DMG package, or command line, MacPorts will not allow me to install it or uninstall it, because apparently it is not yet compatible with darwin 14.

Thank you RydanDesign. I am typing up an email for you at this very moment. I'll send it off shortly.

Update: Thanks to help form Ryan Schmidt, I was finally able to install MacPorts 2.3.1 on my Yosemite 10.10 Public Beta 1 iMac, running Xcode 6 beta 5.

The problem was that I had to set the path to the Xcode beta app in the Terminal, and also install a brand new installation of MacPorts using the source tarball.

In other words, if you are also running the Yosemite beta or DP, you cannot use the MacPorts 2.3.1 DMG file, or the "sudo port -v selfupdate" command in the Terminal.

You must install a fresh copy of MacPorts under Yosemite using the source tarball. It will then also allow you to update your ports as well.

Hope this helps someone.

For those of you who are saddened -- or impatient -- regarding CCC not working with Yosemite betas and DP's, I encourage you to have a look at Mike's thoughts concerning this issue on his blog. Specifically, have a look at this entry: http://bombich.com/blog/?p=22 We all love CCC, but we need to be patient while the CCC team does its work.

Heads up! Little Snitch 3.3.4 is currrently broken with the Yosemite beta from the Apple website -- build 14A299l from July 24, 2014 -- and I assume with DP5 as well.

Update: If you go to the download page on the developer's website, you will find Little Snitch 3.4 Nightly (4202) which is working with Yosemite Public Beta 1. I just now installed it myself and LS is working again. :)

I haven't had the need to use a file recovery type program for many years. However, being as this app is free, out of curiosity, I decided to download it and put it through its paces. As other posters here have noted, the first thing you will notice upon launching this app is that it screams "Windows!". If you are a longtime, diehard Macintosh user, you may find the UI offensive to your taste. However, I was more interested in the functionality of this program, so I overlooked the obvious attempt of a Windows programmer to make his software work on a Macintosh running OS X. BTW, once you choose to begin a scan, the app's window opens fullscreen; so if you have a 27" iMac, expect the entire screen to be taken up by the app. Of course, you do have the option to drag the bottom right corner of the window to your preferred size. The second thing that makes this app scream "Windows!" can be found under the "File Type" tab on the left side of screen. Under that tab you will find jpg, zip, jar, jpeg, doc, xlsx and docx. I assume that these are the default file types that the program lists after a scan is complete. I am not certain, because there is no users manual or built-in help with the app, as far as I can tell. Being as this developer is a Windows user, it would seem that he chose these file types with little regard or concern for what a real Macintosh user might look for. Personally, I extensively use BBEdit .txt files, Adobe Photoshop .psd and .png files, .dmg files, .pdf files, as well as .mkv, .avi, .mp4 and .flv video files, and .html files. Not one of these file types is listed under the "File Type" tab, which in my view makes this app very unMac-like. They should be added. Likewise, for the musically-inclined, a wide range of audio formats should be added to the file type list as well. For my test subject, I chose my 1 TB external drive which uses USB 2.0. After scanning the external drive for files for about an hour, the app had still only done 51%. Above the progress bar it stated that it had found 1,871,622 files. At that point, I got busy in my web browser doing other stuff. When I went back to this app again, just as other posters below have stated, the scanner had started all over again and was back at 4% complete. I wasted over an hour and a half of my time. This app may be free, and it may work for some people, but given what I personally observed with its performance, I cannot currently recommend it with confidence.

Developer, that is an impressive list of file extensions. However, I think that part of the problem is that while you are developing this program to be used under Mac OS X, you are still THINKING like a Windows user.

In other words, you need to THINK like a Macintosh user if you are going to develop an application for Macintosh users. You can't just make it run under Mac OS X. You ALSO need to make it LOOK and FEEL like a Macintosh application. You have failed in this area. You don't even follow Apple's standard GUI guidelines.

As I already mentioned, you also need to add more MACINTOSH-SPECIFIC file extensions to the "File Type" list. You don't even have ".app" on there, which is the extension for an Apple bundled application. All Mac OS X programs use this extension.

To reiterate, make it look like a Mac app, make it feel like a Mac app, follow Apple's GUI standards, add file extensions that are Mac-specific.

The truth is that we Macintosh users are put off by Windows developers who make a halfhearted effort to conform to Apple's programming standards, so please endeavor to make your app more Macintosh user friendly.

.I hope this helps.

Developer, FYI, if you read further down on this MacUpdate page, you will discover that I am not the first person to report the progress bar bug to you. A user by the name of "Dorkypants" reported this very same problem in his comments on January 28, 2013.

In short, this is NOT a new bug. It has existed in your app for at least a year and a half now. Why haven't you made any effort to fix it yet? Again, this fact builds little confidence in your programming abilities if you ignore serious bugs that are reported to you by users here.

You are welcome. I hope that my pointers help you to improve your app so that it is more Macintosh user friendly.

Regarding the File Type list, you may also want to add ".sit" which is the file extension for Stuffit Deluxe compressed files.

While Apple has been pushing ZIP compression on its users for years now, the truth of the matter is that there are still many Macintosh users who prefer to use Stuffit Deluxe to compress their files. This is because the Stuffit Deluxe compression engine compresses files much more efficiently than the ZIP compression algorithm.

Apple seems to think that because it sells machines with such huge hard drives now, that it doesn't matter if hard drive space is lost using the less efficient ZIP compression engine. However, be that as it may, as I said, for many years now, Stuffit Deluxe has been the most widely used file compression program that is used by longtime Macintosh users who care about conserving hard drive space.

So again, please consider adding both ".sit" and ".sitx" to the File Type list, as well as ".dmg", ".app" and some of the more common video formats that are played on the Mac, such as ".mkv", ".avi", ".mp4" and ".flv".

Thank you.

I posted the message below under the "Troubleshooting" section, but I am not sure how many folks will see it there, so I decided to post it as a comment as well. ----- I purchased this app two hours ago. I figured that for $2.00, even if it turned out to be a crappy app, it would be no big loss. So, after the installation, I launched the app, and then proceeded to provide my Facebook login data. I logged in successfully to my Facebook account, and the app does in fact show my Facebook account name in the "Connected as" section of the app's window. I left the "Export File Type" option at "xls". Then I assumed that I was supposed to click on the "Get Data" button in order to begin importing the data from my Facebook account. Well, that was one hour and fifty minutes ago, and the progress bar still says "Loading data..." Now, I know that I have over 4,000 FB friends, and I suspected that it would take a while to import so much data into the app, however, something clearly appears to be wrong here. I thought that perhaps there might be a problem because I am simultaneously logged into my Facebook account with the Firefox web browser. However, even after logging out of my FB account with Firefox, the Friends Export app is still just hanging with "Loading data..." Is anyone getting the same results as me with the app hanging for so long? I won't rate the app for now, just in case I am doing something wrong.

Update: Be advised that after waiting for two hours and twenty minutes, I decided to cancel the "Loading data" operation. However, repeatedly clicking on the "Cancel" button does nothing. Furthermore, because that is the front window in the app, even clicking on the "Disconnect" button -- so that the app is disconnected from my Facebook account -- is useless. Likewise, selecting the "Quit Friends export" option under the "Friends export" menu is useless. The same holds true when I try using the "Quit" option in the dock icon. I finally had to do a forced quit with option-command-escape.

Folks, just so you know, the developer -- Giorgos -- has fixed his app so that it is now working properly for me. Please refer to the "Troubleshooting" tab above for his and my comments. Thanks! So in appreciation, here is my little promo for Giorgos: I have always backed up my Facebook users list in a BBEdit text file. However, using this app makes it so much easier because it is automatic, plus it downloads a lot more user data as well. It probably doesn't need to be said, but it is a wise idea to back up your FB friends list. You never know when Facebook might have serious server problems, and all of your friends data could be lost. Or what if you have had your Facebook account for years -- as I have had -- and suddenly, someone hacks into your account, and you can no longer access it? If you need to open a new account, you would lose your entire friends list, and you would need to start from scratch. Wouldn't it be nice in such a case to at least have a friends backup list, so that you can contact them as your time permits? So as you can see, this is a very useful and practical app for serious Facebook users.

Hello Giorgos, I am happy to report a big improvement in your app. This time it downloaded by Facebook friends database in just a few minutes. I was also able to save the downloaded database as an Excel .xls file without a problem. However, there is one issue. Currently, Facebook reports that I have 4,192 friends. But Friends Export only downloaded the records for 4,043 friends. I realize that people sometimes deactivate their accounts, suddenly unfriend you, or even block you. However, there is a big difference between 4,192 and 4,043. Do you have any idea what might be causing this? I really like the fact that I can easily sort my friends' names alphabetically in the first column. Allow me to make a design suggestion. If it is at all possible, one very nice improvement would be if in the "Profile URL" column, the URLs were actually active, clickable links which would take you to that person's timeline. If this same feature -- the clickable links -- could be implemented in the exported .xls file, that would be great as well. Thanks for getting your app working properly. :)

BLAH! I am NOT happy! I just upgraded to Firefox 29.0, and those darn tabs are back at the top of the window again! So, I Googled real quick to find the solution, which was easy enough. Sadly, using the "about:config" command to access Firefox's hidden options, and then double-clicking "browser.tabs.onTop" to set it to "false" is not working. Even though the "Value" column now says "false", those darn tabs are STILL at the top of window, even after I restart Firefox. What's up guys? You say it is more intuitive to have the tabs at the top of the window. I disagree. I DON'T like them there. Thank you.

For those of you who are wondering, I am talking about the instructions on this page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/put-tabs-back-on-bottom

WordWeaver
+0

@BigJohnson: That's the point. The "browser.tabs.onTop" is a hidden preference, but as I said, that preference IS NOT WORKING now. I think I am going to reinstall 28.0 and see if I can undo the damage that 29.0 did with the tabs.

WordWeaver
+0

Wonderful! I just reinstalled 28.0, and my tabs are back where I want them . . . BELOW THE LOCATION BAR AND FAVORITES BAR. :)

WordWeaver
+0

Thanks for the link, Schmye-Bubbula. I appreciate it. Of course, the irony of this situation is that we should not even need an add-on to put the tabs back on the bottom again, being as Firefox already has the code to do that. It's just that the "browser.tabs.onTop" option is not working properly right now in 29.0 I wonder how much longer that add-on will continue to work. One internal code change could probably break it, if the FF development team is really intent on keeping the tabs at the top. We'll see.

WordWeaver
+0

Ha! I'm not surprised to hear that, Schmye-Bubbula. It looks like the FF development team may possibly be playing hardball with us. Maybe tabs on top are here to stay this time. :(

WordWeaver
+0

Wonderful! Now I am wondering if I should just stick with 28.0 until it dies, or move back up to 29.0. I see no urgency to upgrade every time Mozilla puts out a new version, unless there is an important security issue. I don't even use all of FF's current feature set as it is.

WordWeaver
+1

I hope that this tabs problem isn't a "Resistance-is-futile" issue. In other words, rather than strong-arming us, I am hoping that in their rush to get 29.0 out the door, maybe they simply forgot or overlooked activating the "browser.tabs.onTop" option. I mean, it doesn't make sense that we can change the value from "true" to "false", but have it not work. We'll see. If there is no fix between now, and by 30.0, then I would begin to think that they really are strong-arming us, and that it is now THEIR way, or the highway. I hope that I am wrong, because I really like Firefox, and have used it for years.
