OLAFALFERINK  We sold a 10 user license of version 7.7 to one of our customers. A big customer. Now they have a lot of Word Macro Viri. You can save the infected files, move them, mail them, open, save and close them and there isn't a single warning. Nothing, although all automatic detection features a enabled. If you scan those files manually the viri are removed.

Now their support tells me that we should have noticed that their product does not work in the first year after buying it and that they will have to buy a new support contract to get it working.

So now they have an very unhappy customer and a reseller that sold a them product that is simply not working and of course will never sell it again.

IN2NDO  This program. ver. 8.6 made my home folder disappear right after installing it. I had to go into my guest profile.. looked in the users folder and my profile folder was empty. I downloaded the program again and used its uninstaller and my home folder reappear ..... scared me bad.

Before uninstalling I did try a few things from the new profile I had just created.. I couldn't even repair permissions..

TJERJA  The Virex 8.6 beta application massively crashes illustrator CS3 on 10.4.11. - My Advise, check your crashlog / console regularly and be surprised how much CPU time and Errors this app generates. Incredible that they actually dare to release this as a beta. It should be alfa instead. I've deinstalled virex 8.6 and won't re-use it ever. Next to that, this app slows down my system and becomes a real resource hog when working. I don't understand why this application won't be totally 'invinsible' until I call it to action. There's really no need for Virex to be so hyperactive in an OSX environment.

NINJABOY  Had no problems with this app when I was using XP - it worked great.

Mac version, however, keeps popping up one error messege after another about how its unable to do this or because 'errors'/componant parts missing are found after installation from disk.

Can't figure out why it can't e-update from its own virus definitions database; Has trouble finding the server when I'm already online; Can't find certain componants which I've never heard of, let alone know where to look for them (even if I have them to begin with?)

And yes, it does slow my Mac down to a crawl.

MCJULES  This application:

- Slows my system down (I had been wondering why my iBook wasn't as fast lately... everything went back to normal when I got rid of Virex).

- Crashed after analysing for more than an 1 hour my /Library folder (1Gb), without leaving any report whatsoever.

- Doesn't find viruses inside .sit, .sitx, etc. files (which I thought were quite common archive files on Macs)

In case viruses start to be a problem on Macs, we'll definitely need to have something more efficient than this!

ANONYMOUS  In a folder, I've gathered 5 virii I got by email or when browsing web:

- W32/Mytob.gen@MM,

- W32/Mydoom.bw@MM

- W32/Pate.b

- Exploit-ByteVerify Trojan

- Generic component trojan

With the latest defs (10.2005),

- VirusBarrier X4.1 found only 1 virus : Exploit-ByteVerify Trojan

- NAV 10.0.2 found 3 virii. It missed W32/Mydoom.bw@MM and Generic component trojan

- Virex* 7.2.1 found 4 virii. It missed W32/Mydoom.bw@MM

- Virex* 7.7 found all 5 virii.

* I have to unzip the attachments in order Virex to found 3 of the 5 virii.

ANONYMOUS  My ISP was trying to sell MacAfee Anti-Virus with my connection for like $5 a month. the problem is there is no support for Virex os X Apple tells you they no longer support it and MacAfee will tell you that they sold it to Apple.. so eather way Virex has no support. I also heard something about Apple wanting to sue MacAfee for ripping them off with this software.

The other problem i found was Virex 7.2 never fully scans the drive no matter how many os X versions I have tryed it on there is still the same problem. It seems to hang and just stop half way through the scan. do not spend your money on this software. If it were worth anything Apple would be supporting it. and until you see it in a Keynote anounceing it's been fixed or on the Apple web page stay away from it.

It appears that Apple will not provide support for the newly released Virex 7.6, after years of offering the virus protection software as a benefit of .Mac membership.

In addition, download links to Virex 7.5.1 have been removed from the .Mac website, likewise Virex 7.5.1 no longer shows in your iDisk software folder.
