GENERAL HONEYPOT  I've been trying to get the perl userscript called markdown to work with this. It works for textwrangler, but not this. Is there an alternative anywhere? The script adds html paragraph tags to some text.

ARVIDTP  This looks really cool... I just wish php documents would also update as you type like html documents do. I guess it would have to have its own access to the php engine like Taco HTML Edit does.

TERENOVO  It's amazing how many HTML editors I've used... Of all of those, with out a doubt, skEdit is the easiest to use, has the best interface, and is fully Mac native. Version 4.0 is great except for a few things:

1. There needs to be an "Upload All" button in the toolbar. Also, it should be able to detect which files have non-uploaded changes and only upload those files.

2. The tabs show up despite my preferences setting. The settings take effect normally, but when you open a new window, the tabs come back.

That's all I can think of so far. I have Mac OS X 10.4.11. My copy of skEdit is registered.

POLYFADE  This is a great text editor I've been using since v3.5. Although, there's no exact comparison, skEdit 4.0 contains the important features other contenders (textmate, coda and bbedit) offer. Then, developed with simplicity and ease of use, makes skEdit in disposable. The developer seems to have put forth much effort with v4 and continues to rival what it takes entire companies to create.

VASILIS  I've been using skEdit as my primary editor for a few years now. It is by far the best HTML editor out there. The previous version was already pretty good, version 4 is amazing. I've been working professionally with the beta versions for a year. The developer worked very hard on it, was very responsive and just delivered the best editor out there. Stop looking for an editor, you found it.

SHAWNBLOWER  Every version of Mac OS X comes with Apache installed. However, ASP was developed by Microsoft and thus is geared towards their software. If you're set on using ASP, your best bet is to stick with a PC and IIS. I'm not saying you CAN'T use ASP on Apache, just that I don't believe it's as simple as you were used to.

JNORTHOFF  I mainly use skEdit for writing websites (XHTML and CSS) and I just love the app's auto completion feature and the availability of project management capabilities.

Before, I used jEdit but besides having many plugins and enhanced Java writing features, I prefer skEdit as it's faster and the auto completion feature is just snappier as it presents attributes a certain Html object better than jEdit. For example, creating a table will present a list of possible attributes while typing a space so one can immediatly see what's available.

The GUI is also more polished and not cluttered with unimportant options.

Lifelong updates are obviously a big gain, as well.

The only downside for me is that the project management feature doesn't remember the pages I had open last time so I have to manually open them every time.

So far, my favourite editor on the Mac. And in my personal cost benefit analysis it's the best commercial website editor on the planet.

MARC NOTHROP  The latest version is a big release, this app has matured quite a bit, it's well worth a look. It's true that there was a potentially nasty undo bug, but I was lucky not to see it too much, and it's gone in the latest version. The addition of tabs, FTP/STP/WebDav, working with external FTP apps, etc. etc.

THEODORE LEE  Absolutely the best code editor for Mac OS X - hands down. The fact that it's written by one 21 year old developer just blows my mind. Behold the power of Cocoa!

I've been beta testing 3.6 since last summer. The featureset is amazing. The app is super customizable and should be comfortable for anyone coding HTML, PHP, ASP, Coldfusion or Perl.

A lifetime license for $20? It's a steal. If you code, you NEED this app.

VASILIS  Absolutely the best editor. I tried them all but none of them comes close to skEdit. Fast and simple, but you can customize everything to your personal needs. No fancy features that get in the way if you don't need them.

I've been beta-testing for a while now and the developer is very active, releasing a new version every few weeks.
