OpenOffice.org is both an Open Source product and a project. The product is a multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. Sophisticated and flexible, OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.

BURAK 1. "Insert Comment" feature is useless, making collaboration and note-taking almost impossible, because when you attach a comment to some part of the text, that part isn't highlighted. (Makes the app for me.) 2. Comments not infrequently disappear. (Makes the app useless for me.) 3. Parts of endnotes disappear. 4. Selecting all puts the curser at the end of the document. 5. One can not select all and increase or decrease font size by one punto. All this in PPC 10.5.8. And yes, there's a hidden PPC version as always. (Version 3.2.0rc2)

MUGSUK I must say the program is not as pretty as Pages or MS Office, so I keep giving those a try every now and then, but this program is far superior in terms of functionality, and compatibility. I spend ours each day in a word processor, and this is the business for intel machines (although neoffice is close enough that I'm sure many will prefer it). If enough people give these programs a bash, MS Office's days are numbered. (Version 3.2.0rc1)

KOIBITO-SAN Somebody said this is platform independent. Not even! It won't work on non-Intel machines and hasn't for a very long time. If I wanted an Intel machine, I'd have bought one. Even though I can't use this, I applaud the effort to break away from M$. (Version 3.1.1)

ARVIDTP Also try NeoOffice - it's more 'macified' and may be better on PPC, at least it was back when I was still using my G4 regularly. (Version 3.2.0rc2)

STRIDER72 I would really like to like OpenOffice, but every time I open it up and actually try to DO something with it, it fails me. For example, today I opened an Excel file that shows a 30 year mortage amortization. Change a cell and save. No problem. Now print: OpenOffice prints the whole long spreadsheet on one page, which is unreadably small. There's no way to tell it to go ahead and fit it to the page width, not height. Huh???? So I try to open the file in Excel again. Now that it has been saved by OpenOffice, it crashes Excel. Just Great. (Yes, I did save it as an Excel file.) In the past I've tried to use the "Word" part of OO, and have have similar frustrations. IT looks solid until I actually try to do real work with it, and then I end up stumbling over seemingly obvious holes in the software. *sigh* Maybe by version 4.0 they'll have it worked out. MYRDINN After reading the comments, I'm kind of persuaded that I'm the only one with this problem. And it's a huge one! I've downloaded the software (multiple times, different versions), and I can't open the .dmg file. This file give me the worst crash I've ever seen on Mac OS X. Can't mount the file. Final. I've tried many thing, and everytimes, result is the same : I've to reboot to regain control of my iMac. Weird, isn't it? I did even tried to rename the file, just to see. As soon as the file is selected : crash city! As bad as the first one trying to open the file! This is supposed to be a great piece of software, but I'm stuck with Micro$oft Office, maybe for the rest of my life. (Version 3.1)

HANDYMAC Try NeoOffice (see the link above under OTHER PEOPLE SUGGEST). It's OpenOffice also, Macnified slightly differently; same file formats so completely compatible with standard OpenOffice. See feature comparison of NeoOffice, OpenOffice & MS Office here: http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/NeoOffice_3.0_Feature_Comparison (Version 3.1)
