WHAT'S NEW
Version 5.6.1:
  • CDFinder now catalogs Elgato EyeTV recordings (.eyetv). CDFinder will show the thumbnail for the recording, and also important metadata as well, such as the EPG description, director, actors, and much more. All that is cataloged, displayed, and can of course be searched as well
  • The GeoFinder inside CDFinder now uses the street-level OpenStreetMap for the GPS search (requires 10.5 or newer)! That is much nicer than the built-in map, but since it requires Internet access, the old map is still available. Many thanks to Dirk Stichling!
  • New CoverPrint templates: one for US-Letter format Avery 5692 labels, and one more for the HP Photosmart Direct Print. Thanks a lot to Deneen Winchester-Ristow and David Robinson for their incredible help on this!
  • Double clicking a found item coming from iPhoto will now show this item in iPhoto. There is also a contextual menu command for this, too. You can get iPhoto results by using the GeoFinder, and asking it to search the iPhoto 8 database, too.

LOUKASH  CDFinder is still the most competent removable media cataloging software out there. I'm checking out other similar products regularly, and so far none can match CDFinder in terms of power and flexibility. Not to speak of the first class support, of course. I'm a registered user since 2000. Over the years I have sent many improvement suggestions to Norbert. In the meantime quite a lot of them have been implemented, including the cataloging of Disk Image files in the current version, which has been one of my top feature requests since many years (but apparently not easy to implement!).

KSCHLOBYNSKI  I just found CDFinder when it was on special offer at MacZOT, and I am very glad to have finally found my new disk cataloger.

This is one powerful application, but yet pretty simple to use.

And instead of visual gimmicks, CDFinder offers real bang for the buck. I have dumped my stuffed 37 hard disks on it, and CDFinder chewed them just fine. I love that fact that I can actually see the nice thumbnails in all list modes as well, that is rather helpful at locating a photo visually.

The developer reacts quickly to questions and offers great and friendly support.

Simply awesome!

SHANE C SMITH  This is probably the best catalogue software going, however the interface is in need of a redesign. Please, no more pop up windows.

NORBERT M. DOERNER  "CDFinder and it's really bad interface"

Mh, that is not very helpful. You may not like the interface, but others definitely do like it a lot. You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but that doesn't make the interface of CDFinder bad, you just don't like it.

"The interface is in need of a redesign. Please, no more pop up windows"

What exactly do you mean? Do you rather have the limited all-in-one window approach? Please be a little bit more specific!

Thanks.

WALT9500  I second that.

I really like the interface of CDFinder, it is powerful, fully customizable, and quickly gets the job one. All I need!

Of course, thumbnails of movies would be a nice addition for a future version...

CORPSECORPS  Sorry, i must UN-second that.

It's hard to explain. It's something about having to essentially design your own way of organizing things and in some places being provided too much information while in others not enough. The right pane is okay for browsing, which i rarely do, but getting a second window for searches annoys.

The underpinnings seem nice, but the UI all feels awkward. In the time i've used the software i must have recreated my method of organization of left pane items several times, none of which has seemed satisfactory. I still find myself avoiding the use of the software unless i must because nothing about it is quite right. I can often take some guesses which disc on my shelf is going to contain what i'm looking for, faster than i can locate the item using CDF.

I use it because it's the least evil of the catalog apps, not because i really like it.

CORPSECORPS  I discovered a specific case for an example of why i don't find CDF all that useful. I'm looking for CD & DVD media which contain disk images or other archives of fonts.

I can search catalog info only and find media with "font" in the name, but i also need to find archives (dmg, zip, sit) ON CD's and DVD's which don't have "font" in the name.

I don't see a way to search ONLY the contents of particular media types, except by choosing to Find only in "selected" catalogs, in which case i have to actually select them by hand; but they're scattered throughout a hierarchical folder system.

In another attempt at accomplishing the same thing I did an overall search of my catalogs for names containing '.dmg' (though some archives i'm looking for may be in SIT or ZIP files). Though it's possible to search the results of the list and find DMG files containing fonts, now they aren't restricted to CD's and DVD's. Some are on my hard drives.

How do i quickly find all catalogs of removable media that just contain fonts, plus archives on removable media that contain fonts, while excluding archives on hard drives?

NORBERT M. DOERNER  -> CORPSECORPS

"I've never been thrilled with this new dual paned interface" - We

are sorry to hear that, as this two pane interface was one of the

most requested new features of CDFinder 5, and that is something that

all similar applications now also have... But don't worry, just turn

it off by moving the divider all the way to the right, it will stick

there and stay there, so you are back to the old interface quickly.

"Also, my monitor is 24", 1920x1200 and when i set the type larger,

the rows stay the same, cutting off the descenders or even the bottom

portions of the characters" - You very likely want to increase the

size of the icons, too, as that will increase the height of every

column, accommodating any font size you need... Use the handy size

slider for any view to accomplish that quickly.

"The UI is kinda screwy" and "In any case, the UI needs work" - Uh,

these are not very helpful hints ;-) What exactly don't you like?

"Horribly slow disc scanning" - Actually, CDFinder is as fast as any

other similar tool, as we have established a couple of times here

already, but you really MUST make sure to have comparable settings,

for example the creation of FileCheck values for every file of course

take a long time, as does the reading of Finder comments, or file

versions, or photo metadata, or photo thumbnails, or audio metadata.

That is documented in detail in the CDFinder Users Guide, in chapter

2.4.

CORPSECORPS  After using it more extensively to attempt to bring organization to my chaotic disc collection, i'm finding various aspects of the software i didn't mention quite irritating.

There just doesn't seem to be an overall consistent scheme for organization here. The right pane is redundant and the UI kinda screwy.

I could do without the features than so horribly slow disc scanning and do WITH a more coherent, intuitive method of organization.

A bit pricey, too, especially considering the rest.

VERYCARLA  It can scan a DVD-R full of MP3s in twenty to thirty seconds if you've got a decent DVD-RW drive. Don't blame the software for hardware limitations.

CORPSECORPS  It's nothing to do with the hardware, thank you very much.

It has quite a lot to do with the softare settings, and other software i've tried , though lacking in other ways, can scan faster.

In any case, the UI needs work.

GLIOMA  I've used CDFinder for a couple of years and have always liked it. But I started using DiskCatalogMaker for one simple reason. CDFinder is too slow. My catalog has about 150,000 items. To update the catalog, CDFinder requires 5-10 minutes. DiskCatalogMaker rescans and updates the catalog within 15 seconds. If CDFinder could improve its algorithm for scanning and updating volumes, I would return to it.

DDOGGEREL  I've used ealier versions extensively, and found it very useful (especially the ability to change file/folder names within the catalog for items stored on optical media). I don't know of a better program on OSX for cataloging large numbers of discs.

However, I find that the new v5.x interface is off-putting enough that I have been sticking with v4.7 for a while now. My biggest complaint is that the display within the windows is extremely inefficient, with tons of wasted space everywhere (huge indentation and tab values, large interline spacing, very large "header" area on all windows, unnecessary and undefeatable pane interface on the main window, etc). An additional annoyance is the fact that some key commands have changed or been removed (eg in versions up through 4.7, cmd-minus would navigate one level up, whereas in v5.x it shrinks the text & icon size).

To a certain extent, this inefficiency in the graphical display of data and window structure is endemic to the latest developments of OSX (which itself is a shame), but I think that even within those parameters, things could be greatly improved with CDFinder.
