  • QuickLook: Open a QuickLook window for any selected online file(s) right from inside CDFinder! (Leopard only)
  • Cross-Grade: you already bought a different disk cataloger or media asset manager application, ask us for a good offer!
  • Free email support
WHAT'S NEW
Version 5.6.1:
  • CDFinder now catalogs Elgato EyeTV recordings (.eyetv). CDFinder will show the thumbnail for the recording, and also important metadata as well, such as the EPG description, director, actors, and much more. All that is cataloged, displayed, and can of course be searched as well
  • The GeoFinder inside CDFinder now uses the street-level OpenStreetMap for the GPS search (requires 10.5 or newer)! That is much nicer than the built-in map, but since it requires Internet access, the old map is still available. Many thanks to Dirk Stichling!
  • New CoverPrint templates: one for US-Letter format Avery 5692 labels, and one more for the HP Photosmart Direct Print. Thanks a lot to Deneen Winchester-Ristow and David Robinson for their incredible help on this!
  • Double clicking a found item coming from iPhoto will now show this item in iPhoto. There is also a contextual menu command for this, too. You can get iPhoto results by using the GeoFinder, and asking it to search the iPhoto 8 database, too.

SHANE C SMITH  CDFinder is probably the best cataloguing software for the mac. However this program is in dire need of a facelift. The user interface could be a lot better and easier to use.

IMARC845  I'm a very long-time CDFinder user. I think I started with it back at version 1.6 or so...

I've always found it to be exactly what I need for all of my indexing. It's made the transition with me from CD to DVD to Hard Drive archives. I can search over 350 archive files in less than a minute and subsequent searches take much less than that. (Some of my HD archives have over 100,000 files on them.)

I've always found Norbert Doerner to be responsive to user requests and bug reports. And the application's indices are cross-platform compatible with CDWinder for Windows.

Yes, the user has to establish their own methodology for how to flag media. I happen to like not being pinned down to someone else's idea of how discs/files should be cataloged.

I've always recommended CDFinder and will continue to do so. If you don't like it, feel free to look elsewhere. But I see no reason to badmouth what works so well for so many people.

BRUCEANDERSON  I just burned two data CDs to be delivered to a client and I noticed CDFinder launched automatically after each burn to index the discs. How do I stop this? I can't find any setting in Toast which would do this, and I can't find any setting in CDFinder that would do this either. This seems like the sort of thing the user ought to be able to control.

What the heck is going on?

NORBERT M. DOERNER  Please read the FAQ at http://www.cdfinder.de/en/en/faq.htmlit has an entry for that.

Essentially, you had turned that feature on in Rocxio Toast, and you can turn if off there again.

This is also covered with a screenshot in the extensive CDFinder Users Guide :-)

BRUCEANDERSON  Thanks for your reply. It's really strange though - I've been through every option I could find in Toast, but I missed that one. Thanks! It's nice to know I can do that if need be.

LOUKASH  CDFinder is still the most competent removable media cataloging software out there. I'm checking out other similar products regularly, and so far none can match CDFinder in terms of power and flexibility. Not to speak of the first class support, of course. I'm a registered user since 2000. Over the years I have sent many improvement suggestions to Norbert. In the meantime quite a lot of them have been implemented, including the cataloging of Disk Image files in the current version, which has been one of my top feature requests since many years (but apparently not easy to implement!).

KSCHLOBYNSKI  I just found CDFinder when it was on special offer at MacZOT, and I am very glad to have finally found my new disk cataloger.

This is one powerful application, but yet pretty simple to use.

And instead of visual gimmicks, CDFinder offers real bang for the buck. I have dumped my stuffed 37 hard disks on it, and CDFinder chewed them just fine. I love that fact that I can actually see the nice thumbnails in all list modes as well, that is rather helpful at locating a photo visually.

The developer reacts quickly to questions and offers great and friendly support.

Simply awesome!

HOVER  From CDFinder main site about DiskLibrary and FileFinder:

"Developer of DiskLibrary has no proper supplier identification on web site, no company name or adress, no tax number, no legal entity description, no nothing"

According to the comment below i don't found this company very honest to use fear and doubs against other developers as mentioned in this deliberately wrong and obsolete catalogger comparison page and personally, i prefer to use Filefinder which has globally the same features for a lower price

... and too many minimalist five stars reviews here...

NORBERT M. DOERNER  Well, not posting a complete postal address and business identification is a business violation in Europe, to protect customers. The creators of the mentioned software seem to be located in Europe, from what little can be gathered on their web site, so they should have a complete identification on their web site.

When you do business in the Internet, it is a good idea to know with whom you are dealing with, and not having a complete identification is a bit weird for a business...

HOVER  Are you working for the european business police? or just a proud selfclaimed european customer protector??? Over the web, most of shareware developers neither mention postal address or business identification on web sites and nobody care. Using a country law peculiarity as a marketing argument is not really regular and looks like some kind of denunciation...

NORBERT M. DOERNER  Funny you should use the word "denunciation". You give CDFinder a bad review based on "too many minimalist five stars reviews here...", I wonder what these reviewers think about your remarks...

And Europe is no country, but one of the larger markets in the world...

DIEDERIK  As the author of DiskLibrary I could not resist the urge to reply to this thread.

In Europe (al least the part that is called The Netherlands) it is NOT (legally) required to have your company address listed on your web site. Maybe Mr. Doerner was confusing a website with an invoice, an easy mistake to make, for which a company address is required.

We prefer to communicate with our customers by email or forum. Most Mac software companies do not mention their address on websites (Red Sweater Software, Sofa, Bare Bones, etc.)

For the record, we do have our Tax registration and Chamber of Commerce number listed on our website.

Kind regards,

Diederik

BENP  Is there a reason why this app is consistently (for 1+ month, if I'm not mistaken) at the top of the "Weekly Popular" list on the home page? I really doubt that's the case - no matter how good it is.

MISHA  You're not the only who has noticed this... there's been some suspect behavior surrounding this, but we've taken care of it. Some developers like to write scripts that ping our download link every second to inflate their numbers and get into the Weekly Popular. We've taken some measures to prevent this from happening moving forward.

LOUKASH  Given that this app has been around since 13 years (see http://www.cdfinder.de/en/en/versions.html) and successfully managed the transformation from Classic to OS X, it's likely that there is a pretty large user base who will download every new update available. I mean: I'm using CDFinder since 2000. And even though I'm currently using Norbert's yet-to-be-released 5.6 beta version, usually I'm downloading the regular updates via MacUpdate as well.

In other words: despite some quirks and in parts a bit "dated" interface design, CDFinder is probably still the most competent removable media cataloging software out there. I'm looking at other similar products regularly, and so far none can match CDFinder in terms of power and flexibility. Not to speak of the first class support, of course. (That's why I have currently the pleasure to use a "private" beta... :)

MISHA  We changed the way we log downloads at MU so that only 1 download per app per IP counts every 24 hours.

When we did this, daily downloads of CDFinder (which ranged from 25-5000) mysteriously stayed around 25-75 after that.

NORBERT M. DOERNER  "CDFinder and it's really bad interface"

Mh, that is not very helpful. You may not like the interface, but others definitely do like it a lot. You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but that doesn't make the interface of CDFinder bad, you just don't like it.

"The interface is in need of a redesign. Please, no more pop up windows"

What exactly do you mean? Do you rather have the limited all-in-one window approach? Please be a little bit more specific!

Thanks.

WALT9500  I second that.

I really like the interface of CDFinder, it is powerful, fully customizable, and quickly gets the job one. All I need!

Of course, thumbnails of movies would be a nice addition for a future version...

CORPSECORPS  Sorry, i must UN-second that.

It's hard to explain. It's something about having to essentially design your own way of organizing things and in some places being provided too much information while in others not enough. The right pane is okay for browsing, which i rarely do, but getting a second window for searches annoys.

The underpinnings seem nice, but the UI all feels awkward. In the time i've used the software i must have recreated my method of organization of left pane items several times, none of which has seemed satisfactory. I still find myself avoiding the use of the software unless i must because nothing about it is quite right. I can often take some guesses which disc on my shelf is going to contain what i'm looking for, faster than i can locate the item using CDF.

I use it because it's the least evil of the catalog apps, not because i really like it.

CORPSECORPS  I discovered a specific case for an example of why i don't find CDF all that useful. I'm looking for CD & DVD media which contain disk images or other archives of fonts.

I can search catalog info only and find media with "font" in the name, but i also need to find archives (dmg, zip, sit) ON CD's and DVD's which don't have "font" in the name.

I don't see a way to search ONLY the contents of particular media types, except by choosing to Find only in "selected" catalogs, in which case i have to actually select them by hand; but they're scattered throughout a hierarchical folder system.

In another attempt at accomplishing the same thing I did an overall search of my catalogs for names containing '.dmg' (though some archives i'm looking for may be in SIT or ZIP files). Though it's possible to search the results of the list and find DMG files containing fonts, now they aren't restricted to CD's and DVD's. Some are on my hard drives.

How do i quickly find all catalogs of removable media that just contain fonts, plus archives on removable media that contain fonts, while excluding archives on hard drives?
