TOM_BOVO I do not understand why the good reviews of this software, without giving examples or any concrete evidence, are allowed to stay here. Most negative reviews are removed by the MacUpdate staff. This is not unbiased reportage by this web site. Perhaps under pressure from PGP corp, all, negative reviews are are just made to go away. If someone Googles for PGP reviews, a different story about this company will emerge. (Version 9.9.1)

EVAN MCNULTY I just googled "pgp review" and they were by and large positive. (Version 9.9.1)

TOM_BOVO Try Googling "pgp problems" or "pgp issues," "PGP crashes," or look at the reviews at versiontracker.com--you will find a lot of reported problems with the software and a lot of discontent with PGP Corp. Most of the negative reviews come from ac users and problems with the company are from individual users. PGP Corp caters to Windows and corporate users, and spends a lot of time suppressing bad press. (Version 9.9.1)

SUGE JONZE Finally a great full disk encryption application from a trusted name in security.... While I've used a little of everything in the past, the new full disk feature is perfect for a lazy like myself that wants to not think about securing my disk and just for it to happen. I wish it worked with BootCamp, but hey, it's the first release and has worked great for me -- meaning i don't even notice anything has changed at all except for I have a login screen to start the on-the-fly encryption when I first boot up. Great release and great new feature. I've used and still use many open source encryption products, but when I'm encrypting every sector of my drive, I feel more comfortable doing so with a commercial product that has established QA processes and a dedicated dev team. Thanks PGP. You kept us waiting a while, but it was worth it. (Version 9.9)

DAVELON Works well on both my PPC (10.4.11) and my Intel (10.5.4) machines. Does what it is supposed to do. I have not had the time to encrypt my boot disk as yet but use the Virtual disks and have been using them for years without any data loss. Whenever I have needed help, it has been provided promptly and always proven useful and to the point. Love this program. (Version 9.9)

CERNIUK Solid comprehensive encryption. With the right settings, this is an outstanding application but the company's support leaves something to be desired. Since version 9 (or 8?) they have added the ability to use PGP's encryption for the email connections between the user's computer and the email server. In theory this is great if they prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. In practice, PGP seems to fail and flounder all over the place when attempting to take over the encryption task from your mail system. I have to turn this off to use PGP for email. Second is the automagic email encryption itself. It looks to see if your recipients have PGP and will encrypt if so. This is all find an dandy but I don't want my emails encrypted most of the time. It increases the size and makes them incompatible with my iPhone when reading mail from the same accounts. Fortunately they provide an unsupported but absolutely critical Mail.app plugin which puts buttons in Mail to selectively sign and encrypt email. Finally, the new addition of Whole Disk Encryption is absolutely stellar. In some informal testing, PGP's encryption software (AES) appears to be significantly faster and more efficient than Apple's native encryption software (aka FileVault system). I recorded broadcast quality video to disk with no disruption to workflow using full disk encryption. Later I scrubbed back and forth trying to force latency in the video editor and could not get PGP to go higher than utilizing 0.2% of the processor. FileVault, under the same conditions, used as high as 2%, or 10 times more processor. Lastly, PGP engineers have a very complex application but manage to provide and excellent Mac user experience. Their adherence to the Mac interface guidelines is even better than Apple in many cases. Long story short, stability, functionality, user interface, performance are all superb (5). Sales support, complexity, and price could all use some work (-1). Overall 4/5 (Version 9.9)

LMONKEY Possibly worst PGP release ever. 9.7 Leopard Mail bundle crashes Mail.app, requests in pgp forums are never answered nor commented. Load of unnecessary processes in the background. I am now a happy user of GPG and this Mail.app plugin: http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/ (which is free) and regret my previous purchase of PGP Desktop.

TAKY I've been using PGP Desktop for many years both on PC and Mac platforms. I've not had much trouble on the PC. However, the Mac PGP Desktop has always been problematic. I've experienced major stability issues with almost every update or OS upgrade. If you are on Tiger and planning an upgrade to Leopard, be careful. Some of your most valuable data might become unaccessible. If you are planning to deploy PGP Desktop for the first time, consider your alternatives like open source. Apple's own AES-secured disk images are not bad at all. But it's not that simple as there's mail security. In any case, please check out my blog at http://pgpsucks.wordpress.com for tips and stories on PGP Desktop. (Version 9.7pb1)

OLIVER_SMITH pure crap! I deeply regret buying this software. From a basic usage of encryption it became a nightmare for daily usage. 9.6 remove the apple mail plugin while the local proxy like is mess to configure and doesn't work for me out of the box. AIM encryption is also a joke any attachment sent by ichat failed. "Support" is crap unless you shout their forum. Version 8.x was much better than this joke. (Version 9.6)

ZAPH Works as advertised for me. It's a little complex to setup, but once that's done it's been stable for me. There are free alternatives, but my needs are meet well with PGP Desktop. Email, IM and disk/image encryption, all working well. (Version 9.5.3)

CHRISTOFER Is it? This was posted 7 December last year(!) on the GnuPG web site, and still no new version: "7 December 2006: Attention! There is a security hole in GnuPG versions prior to 1.4.6 and 2.0.2 respectivly. We are working hard to provide you with a current installer for version 1.4.6 as soon as possible. However, meanwhile you should try to compile GnuPG by yourself by making use of the HOWTO found in section Documentation." (Version 9.5.3)

RON WEST After being a PGP licensed user for years... When you initially make the purchase you get 30 days of “free tech support.” Following that, well get ready to pay an “arm and a leg!” When a update is released and you install it, you discover there are problems and you need support, there isn’t any; unless you again are willing to pay an “arm and a leg!” The support forums are useless! I’m saddened to have to write this... but it is the truth. Since 1985 I’ve never come across any software with such poor Tech Support! (Version 9.0.6)
