DESCRIPTION
NetShred X... Clear Cache, erase History permanently with NetShred X, the easy-to-use internet track eraser for Mac OS X that securely erases cached files your browser and email programs leave behind. NetShred X is the internet privacy software that is easy, fast and cleaner. Easy because it runs automatically - you don't have to remember to use it. Fast because it runs in the background - you don't have to wait for it. Cleaner because it will erase, not just delete all internet tracks for almost every browser and email program on Mac OS X. Your web browser stores copies of the images and text that you see in on your hard drive. Anyone with access to your computer can look through these files and see what information you have accessed on the web. These internet tracks - browser cache, history, download cache, quicktime cache, favicons and email cache, trash, spam and junk mail - not only potentially compromise your privacy, they also take up a lot of disk space. Clearing your cache, throwing these files in the trash, or deleting them will not remove the file contents from the hard drive - it just removes the file name from the directory, leaving the data intact and recoverable. To dispose of these internet tracks, use an internet track eraser to erase them so they CAN'T be recovered.

Y-GUY I'm constantly amazed at the overpricing of Mac Shareware. Might be a great piece of software, but at $25 its overpriced IMHO. Other programs like MacCleanse are a bit cheaper and appear to do more, but even MacCleanse seems over priced.

MACGUY_81 This seems like a exploitative and uneccessary piece of software, considering all major browsers provide many ways of doing this automatically, for free. There are many different scripts that can be run which will do this for free, automatically, in the background. Or just choose 'Private Browsing' in Safari or 'Clear Private Data' in FireFox, etc.

BURNINGTHUMB If you clear private data without using a secure delete, ask this reviewer suggests, those private items are recoverable by many off the shelf file recovery tools. If you "forget" to enable private browsing you could leave a lot of private information around - NetShred runs automatically so you don't forget to run it.

GOSTCODER Safari does this for me with the "Reset" menu item under the Apple menu. If you're seriously paranoid about people being able to uncover your browsing history, you need therapy, and no software program can help you with that.

BURNINGTHUMB NetShred overwrites the private information. Safari deletes it. The difference is that when NetShred is done no file recovery software can be used to retrieve the information, when Safari is done anyone, even your kids, could recover your private information.

HAPPYBASSETT I like it, I've heard that but its not for shredding files - try SecretShredder for that...

ANONYMOUS SecretShredder is no better. It's an overly simplistic algorithm recommended for cleansing memory chips, not magnetic storage devices. BURNINGTHUMB The information on rixstep is obsolete. Gutmann revised his paper but rixstep "forgot" to revise their site. The 35 overwrites is just wearing out your hard disk, its not doing a "better" job - that's the gist of Gutmanns revision. We do make ShredIt X which is a perfect GUI file, folder, disk free space, and optical CDRW shredder. It also includes a safe place feature (sorry command line fans no safe place for you to keep things) so that you don't accidentally shred important files.
