DESCRIPTION

Dejal Simon is the essential site monitoring tool for Mac OS X. It checks web pages, FTP and DNS servers, local or remote ports, and other services for changes or failures, and notifies you via e-mail, sound, speech, Twitter, HTML reports, and other means.

Add tests to Simon to track updated sites, to alert you when an important server goes down or recovers, check on Samba SMB, take periodic screenshots of the system, track posts and new comments on your or friends' blogs, check for web mail, make sure a key application is running, get notifications of updates to favorite news and entertainment websites, keep an eye on auctions, and many other uses.

Services include Web (HTTP) to check web pages (including secure ones, and supporting POST and cookies), FTP files and directory listings, DNS, Ping servers, see Twitter updates, watch a local Application, capture periodic Screenshots, watch for System Log Errors, and more. Plus, you can easily add your own services via custom port connections, AppleScripts, shell scripts, or Perl, PHP, Python, etc.

Receive notification of changes, failures, and/or recoveries via various Actions, auto-generated E-mail messages (including to your pager or cellphone), Growl notifications, Twitter updates or direct messages, iCal or Google Calendar events, an audible Sound, or customizable Speech.

HTML reports allow remote viewing of a summary and/or details of Simon monitoring. Reports can be saved to a local web server, or uploaded remotely. Customizable templates (with several examples provided) allow embedding in a web page, using a compact format suitable for viewing on PDAs and cellphones, creating a RSS feed, and more.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.5.6:
  • Changed the reports to trim off the filename for the OutputLocation report variable when using the file:// protocol, to avoid breaking reports like the iPhone template.
  • The License window is now brought to the front when the application is activated, if it is open, to avoid it being mistakenly hidden behind the Montor window (e.g. if it is automatically hidden).
  • Fixed an issue with counting the number of active tests, where it was mistakenly counting "waiting" tests as active, even if they're normally paused.
  • Added a hidden preference to output debug information about the internet connection (for use with the automatic offline mode). It can be activated by entering "defaults write com.dejal.simon2 InternetConnectionDebugMode YES" in Terminal.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

MRCHIPS  This is one of those programs that "runs in the background" and therefore is seldom noticed. It just works! But it's saved my bacon on more than one occasion when a site or blog went down. It pretty much just works out of the box - not hard to figure out at all.

Also, I've never had an issue with it. But the developer has a good rep so I suspect I'd have no problem getting help if I needed it.

PHIL COATES  I never even knew this software existed! I have been looking for something like this for a while - the thing I like best is the interface and plug in method - rock on!

WRANGLERTX  I really like this app. Like others, I've tried many different monitoring solutions. I don't remember how I stumbled onto Simon (probably here), but very glad I did.

GARRISON  I wasn't expecting too much when I started using Simon; I had used various open source monitoring packages and figured Simon was just going to be a nice GUI to do basically the same thing. I WAS WRONG. Simon is full of nice touches and is a very polished package. The flexibility in setting up a variety of tests and customising the different notifications is simply amazing. And it is so easy to configure. The developer is also very helpful and responsive. This is by far the best software I have purchased this year (& maybe will be all year).

But more to the point, it has already saved me money by giving me a notification about a misbehaving server before the problem became a serious issue.

DAVID CHANDLER  I have been using Simon for over a year now and all I can say is what a great product, it does what it is supposed to and the support from the developer is first class, if you have any configuration problems David goes out of his way to help (even at weekends), this product gets better and better with each release, there is nothing else like it. If you want to monitor your servers and keep an eye on what is happening this product is a must have.

MMB  I've been using Simon for just over a month now and I'm very pleased with it, I currently monitor 3 servers with almost 100 pages and it works flawlessly, I tried similar programs (mostly on windows) but none of them worked as solidly as Simon.

I agree with the previous post regarding support, on the couple of occasions I have e-mailed them their response has been excellent even though the problems were my own fault ( I never read the manual)

Apart from a couple of features I would like to see added I cannot find anything bad to say about this program and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a program of this type.

STORMYMONDAYS  This is an absolutely fantastic piece of software. It's easy to use, detailed and comprehensive.

At present I use it to monitor 16 servers, using several services (ping, http, etc.).

Testing servers via http is essential for me, since most servers would still ping after the webserver has crashed.

The ability to detect changes on the page is fantastic to: it allows me to detect mySQL errors in forums and dynamic sites.

Above all, the support is excellent. I've gotten in touch with Dejal many times with feature requests and (little) bug reports and they have always replied instantly, fix anything that needed fixing and trying to integrate the feature requests into the next release.

Top top it all,my PC friends are jealous when they see it! :-)

TIM STRINGER  I've been using Dejal Simon 2 for over a month to track client sites that I host under a reseller service and was so impressed with this solution that I recently purchased a corporate-level license. I've found it to be an invaluable tool that includes a wide feature set and an innovative interface. I've communicated with the developer, David, on several occassions and was very impressed with the level of support he provides and his openness to user feedback. Highly recommended!
