Haxial TextEdit is a fast and free text editor that edits plain text files. It can edit text files in Mac, DOS/Windows, and Unix formats. It also includes a Find/Replace function, and a menu for quick access to your favorite documents. It can also count the number of occurrences of a piece of text in a file, and alphabetically sort lines of text. It includes a "Favorites" menu allows quick access to your favorite documents. It can scroll through large files very quickly.
Version 1.7:
- Added option to encrypt documents with a password (see File menu).
- New "Extract Lines" command in Tools menu extracts every hard line in the selected text (or all if no selection) that contains the specified text, into a new document.
- New "Insert Date/Time" command in Tools menu inserts the current date/time into the document at the selection position, using the formatting options that you specify.
- Minor bug fixes.
Mac OS 9.0 or later, CarbonLib.

ANONYMOUS We need apps like this because Apple's text editor are nothing of the sort. At least with Simple Text you could edit html code. If you don't like non-Apple UI, or method of working, stay clear and download something bigger and more bloaty that works how you expect. If all you want to do is edit plain text file / html etc and don't mind the above, this might do it for you (Version 1.7)

ANONYMOUS You can edit HTML in Apple's TextEdit too. Preferences > "Ignore rich text commands in HTML files" (Version 1.7)

EUROPA I love this program, also the design of the interface is great and its the fastest texeditor around. Its very good how it manage to intergrate with mac os x so flawlessly (even os 9) with that design Its even theme customizable I use skedit for my xhtml (Version 1.7)

"APPLE USER SINCE -88" I seldomly complain on poor products. I simple let them slide into the Trash but looking at this I cannot shut up; this is by far the ugliest app I've ever seen on OS-X. How is this supposed to be integrated in the rest of the environment a user is facing? Look for instance at keyboard shortscuts, at the file requesters and the way they and the whole app does NOT fit into a working system. This show how good Apple is at UIs dispite the bad parts in the NEXT herritage. I keep on using BBEdit thank you...... (Version 1.7)

ANONYMOUS Without "the bad parts of the NeXT heritage", Apple wouldn't have a chance to do any UI, because Apple would either be defunct or shipping a skinned version of XP. Think about that. (Version 1.7)

A MARTIN And the speed of all the Haxial apps is something Apple should follow... (Version 1.7)

ANONYMOUS fast, but so is vim. plus it has the same name as the os-supplied editor - awesomely dumb. (Version 1.631)

ANONYMOUS If the find feature handled grep, this would be worth keeping around. As it is, if I'm going to use a non-native text editor, I'll use jEdit. (Version 1.6)

OS X OR NOTHING "This just shows how much work OS X needs before it'll be usable." USABLE?!?!? You are certifiably out of your mind, or perhaps you just picked a bad choice of words... OS X is a dream come true, and I have been using Apple computers since 1978. There is no way I want *any* part of *any* older Mac OS. (Version 1.4.5)

A MARTIN But it could be faster. Admit it. (Version 1.4.5)

ANONYMOUS Exactly. Compared to OS9, OSX's interface is noticably sluggish even on my G5. Plus I miss being able to drag select items in list view with a selection box. (Version 1.6)

ANONYMOUS I really want to hate this app, because, well, just look at it!, but the fact that it's so blindingly fast makes it impossible to hate. This just shows how much work OS X needs before it'll be usable. (Version 1.4.5)

A MARTIN Maybe Haxial should start deveolping an Operating System. Faster applications than theirs are difficult to find. :-) Just check the launch time of Haxial TextEdit! (Version 1.4.5)

ANONYMOUS Their apps also don't do all that much. If you want the Haxial equivalent of an OS, use 7.1 on a Quadra 840. (Version 1.631)

DOUG What can i say, it's fast, free, cross-platform, skinnable, and can handle LARGE files with ease. I only wish the find and replace handled wildcards or 'special' characters like tabs and newlines. (Version 1.2)
