YOGERT909 I've tried about 10 similar applications and iPod viewer is the best. It does exactly what I'd like it to do. It copies files off my ipod and saves them to wherever I want. I can configure it to create folders for artist, album, and genre and it also names the files based on id3 tag info. nice job, thanks.

SAM I can confirm the Windows-format iPod issue - it did indeed screw up the directory structure on my windows-format iPod, and I'm looking at a restore now myself. The iPod thinks it has 0 songs, and iTunes "unexpectedly quits" whenever it's plugged in. Issue remains after the usual troubleshooting steps (reset ipod, reboot, even created a new user w/ empty itunes... nope, the ipod is confused.) Windows-format iPod users are strongly cautioned...

ANONYMOUS This just saved my bacon. It's the only .App that I have found that sorts by album/song/artist. Nice when you need to grab tracks of a 40 GB 'Pod.

ANONYMOUS I have a Windows formatted iPod. I used iPod Viewer to copy music off my iPod onto a Mac (OS X 10.3.4). It did not copy all of my music and now when I try to run iTunes it says it cannot read the contents of my iPod and tells me to run software to return it to factory settings. Does anyone know what iPod Viewer changed on my iPod? Any ideas?

KAT hi there,I was just browsing through the forum looking for some help,and noticed you had the exact same problem as I had:itunes error message says it cannot read my ipod and i should restore it to factory settings.I was just wondering what you did,cuz I'm freaking out!!

ANONYMOUS i was looking to find a piece of software to complement my ipod. ie copy back my music. i guess this is not the way to do it to a windows formatted ipod. does anyone know of a way of doing it?? thanks.

ENGLISHMAN_IN_NY I have had the exact same problem that you are all experiencing and this program just saved my life! I was going crazy thinking i was gonna lose all my mp3s i was stupid enought not to back up, but this program managed to access ALL my mp3's with a better interface than ANY other program. I've just managed to extract all my mp3's onto my mac and now i'm gonna format the ipod for mac. I only bought it 3 weeks ago! I can't believe i have to do this! But that's Bill Bloody Gates for you! I formatted my ipod on a pc when i first got it, Once again Bill Gates has managed to screw people over who want to go cross platform.

RICH I guess it's Willy Gates's fault that Apple didn't write an HFS+ filesystem driver for the iPod, and they copped out by using FAT. Damn you Willy.

If you use the Mac iPod installer, it formats the iPod somewhat like any other regular Mac drive (with special exceptions, of course).

If you use the Windows iPod installer, it's formatted as a FAT drive.

HOOLIGAN81 Took a little fiddling with to get my music from my iPod to my iTunes library, but nothing anyone couldn't figure out. All I wanted was to move my music from my iPod to a new hard disk. Although it didn't transfer my playlists, it's a small price to pay for getting ALL my music back onto my computer for FREE.

ANONYMOUS It doesn't read AAC files. A lot of the files I took from a friend's computer are AAC and I can't take them off my iPod, It doesn't even recognize them as being on my iPod.

Any suggestions?

ANONYMOUS Try "Tinker Tool" - it allows you to relaunch your desktop and view all invisible files, including the aac files on your ipod. it's a pain to find songs since they are mixed up in about 50 folders, but it's better than nothing.

i'm assuming you have a mac, but you might not.
