HMURCHISON I don't know what's causing it but for the second time in a row MUD borked the update to SOHO Organizer. SOHO Notes updates fine but SOHO Organizer fails to install. This happened for the recent 8.09 to 8.10 and now 8.11 updates. Is anyone else noticing this problem? (Version 5.0.3)

FREEDMAN Two requests for the developers: 1. There doesn't seem to be a way to "reactivate" applications you select to stop watching (Apple-S). 2. Automate the program so it can be user configured to check for updates daily and, if selected by the user, automatically install those updates. The program will be worth the cost once automation is implemented. Until then, I'm on the fence. (Version 5.0.3)

JOEL MUELLER 1) You re-activate the scan that you've skipped by telling it to, "Check for update next scan" in the same way you skipped it (right click or action menu at the bottom). 2) We plan to add scheduled scanning so you don't have to manually ask Desktop to scan, in the future. RUBAIYAT Whilst I find this extremely useful, it is time consuming as it crashes with monotonous regularity and I prefer to manually DL & install my software. If you let it do it automatically I can't see how to have it have exceptions, which I need as it updates to unregistered later version, where I don't want it to. Not Macupdate's fault, but some developers foolishly have different names for their software and the installers. Wish I could note these somewhere. It certainly has cleaned up my installations! Thumbs up. Now if it would only stop crashing. (Version 5.0.3)

WANGCHUNG MacUpdate Desktop is a GREAT app!! Intuitive, fast, even reconnects an updated app to earlier version aliases. It might be nice to have a way to distinguish new version updates that require a new license (new charges) prior to updating so you can decide if you want the new version, but I'll try "install and archive" to see if that would suffice instead. MUD trumps VersionTracker Pro hands down, and I've been using that very capable app for many years! My 10 day free trial will become permanent! Great job!! (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 We will be adding additional support for "paid" updates and also "beta" updates in a future release, so stay tuned! Thanks for the feedback!

AAPPLE Downloaded and tried it. Found LOTs of stuff out of date but, really, almost all of it I do not want updated either due to requiring a fee to upgrade or because I really do not use it. In the few cases where I wondered what the thing was and tried to update I wound up with automatically installing something I did not want and it installed stuff in my startup items I had to remove, etc (the installer, not MacUpdate Desktop). So, if this were free, I probably would use it to check status but even then would not use it to do anything automatic since it is really TOO automatic. Since it is not free, in fact pretty expensive considering you have to pay an annual fee, it is not for me.. alas. (Version 5.0.3)

JOEL MUELLER The level of automation is really up to you. You can choose to only download the update, download + install the update, or download + install + archive older version. And you can do this on an individual basis or all of your apps with 1-click. So really, the control is given to the user, in terms of how much automation they would like to benefit from. DP8 We will be adding additional support for indicating "paid" updates in a future release. Also, there is an option to only scan "recently used apps", so that you can safely ignore apps that you may not be using or care to update, and focus more on the apps that you do commonly use. Thanks for the feedback!

FREEDMAN Too early to tell whether this program is more beneficial than simply checking MUMenu each day and manually upgrading. The automatic feature would justify the upgrade, but it's not clear how it works. I have my preferences set to automatically download and install new versions, and archive the old version. When does MUD automatically scan for new versions? Only on launch, or periodically while the program is open? (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 The current version (5.0.3) will scan when first launched, or you can start scanning manually using the Check for Updates menu option. We will be adding automatic/schedule checking in a future release.

ISMACK - Started using macs about 15 years ago. - Started monitoring MacUpdate site about 5 years ago. - Started as a payed Member about 3 years ago - relying on Watchlist for update info. - Started using MacUpdate Desktop a few weeks ago - only on my mac. - Have about 55 apps on my mac and a few less on my touch. - Keep a few other macs (family & friends) updated also. To me, MacUpdate (& MacUpdate Desktop) is a good and valued resource. It's been a good tool to help me keep my macs up to date. It's not perfect, but what is in this life. It would be nice to have a list of iPhone/iPod Touch apps in the MacUpdate Desktop column, to see updated info on those apps, instead of having to go through all the steps in iTunes. Have a great weekend everyone! (Version 5.0.3)

ISMACK P.S. - After my first few year of using a mac, I am not an early adopter. I always wait a week after software is posted before I install. (Version 5.0.3)

VFJCZYN5LQXK Works as advertised. Very convenient! It is worth a try if you use many Mac apps that Apple's Software Update doesn't cover. You do need to pay for MacUpdate account upgrade but it's reasonably priced (I think) and well worth the time I save using this app. Thank you MU team for good works! (Version 5.0.3)

POTCASTER This is the best app out there for keeping mac software up to date. It is easy to use, and quickly assesses all of your software on your hard drive. The main benefit that this app has over free apps is that it also checks for widget updates, all in one app. Now for the downside: The only downside is that it is a paid app, deservingly so, it really does a good job, but there are free apps that do a pretty god job as well. Cnet has a application updater that is web based, but is fast and easy to use, and checks for everything but widgets. And there are at least two or three widgets that do an excellent job of checking whether your installed widgets are up to date. None do both in one app, as easily as Macupdate does. In my opinion the best solution would be to sell this application at a better price point. I think $10 would be a perfect price for this app. (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 Thank you for your review and feedback. I wanted to point out a few key differences between MacUpdate Desktop, and what the widgets and cnet web page offer. 1) Automatic installs - MacUpdate Desktop will automatically download and install your updates for you - the widgets and cnet page only offer links to open more pages and download manually. 2) Archive before installing - MacUpdate Desktop can automatically create a backup archive of your old app before updating it, allowing you to try new versions of apps without worrying about anything. 3) Watch Lists - MacUpdate Desktop allows you to easily create lists of your favorite apps, and receive email notifications when new versions are released. Watch Lists also sync automatically with your account on MacUpdate.com, which means that you can be surfing the site, see an app you are interested in, and then add it to your Watch Lists with one click. Then later when you have time or return home, you can have MacUpdate Desktop install it for you with one click. 4) Detailed version information - in MacUpdate Desktop you can view the release notes for the current version of an app right there in one window - the widgets and cnet offer no information on what you are downloading or why you would want to update, or bounce you back and forth between a widget and multiple web pages. 5) More updates - MacUpdate Desktop will find more updates for you than any other app or widget - it covers more than 30,000 applications, widgets, screen savers, and preference panes. We have done a lot of work to make sure that you find all of your available updates automatically - in our tests, the other widgets and application only find 30-60% of the available updates. And finally 6) There is more to come! We have been working on MacUpate Desktop for a while now, and have been tracking Mac apps for over 12 year. We want to help as many Mac users as possible keep their software updated and secure and are dedicated to making MacUpdate Desktop and MacUpdate.com the best way to do that. We appreciate your feedback and are looking forward to more great things to come!
