ISMACK - Started using macs about 15 years ago. - Started monitoring MacUpdate site about 5 years ago. - Started as a payed Member about 3 years ago - relying on Watchlist for update info. - Started using MacUpdate Desktop a few weeks ago - only on my mac. - Have about 55 apps on my mac and a few less on my touch. - Keep a few other macs (family & friends) updated also. To me, MacUpdate (& MacUpdate Desktop) is a good and valued resource. It's been a good tool to help me keep my macs up to date. It's not perfect, but what is in this life. It would be nice to have a list of iPhone/iPod Touch apps in the MacUpdate Desktop column, to see updated info on those apps, instead of having to go through all the steps in iTunes. Have a great weekend everyone! (Version 5.0.3)

ISMACK P.S. - After my first few year of using a mac, I am not an early adopter. I always wait a week after software is posted before I install. (Version 5.0.3)

VFJCZYN5LQXK Works as advertised. Very convenient! It is worth a try if you use many Mac apps that Apple's Software Update doesn't cover. You do need to pay for MacUpdate account upgrade but it's reasonably priced (I think) and well worth the time I save using this app. Thank you MU team for good works! (Version 5.0.3)

POTCASTER This is the best app out there for keeping mac software up to date. It is easy to use, and quickly assesses all of your software on your hard drive. The main benefit that this app has over free apps is that it also checks for widget updates, all in one app. Now for the downside: The only downside is that it is a paid app, deservingly so, it really does a good job, but there are free apps that do a pretty god job as well. Cnet has a application updater that is web based, but is fast and easy to use, and checks for everything but widgets. And there are at least two or three widgets that do an excellent job of checking whether your installed widgets are up to date. None do both in one app, as easily as Macupdate does. In my opinion the best solution would be to sell this application at a better price point. I think $10 would be a perfect price for this app. (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 Thank you for your review and feedback. I wanted to point out a few key differences between MacUpdate Desktop, and what the widgets and cnet web page offer. 1) Automatic installs - MacUpdate Desktop will automatically download and install your updates for you - the widgets and cnet page only offer links to open more pages and download manually. 2) Archive before installing - MacUpdate Desktop can automatically create a backup archive of your old app before updating it, allowing you to try new versions of apps without worrying about anything. 3) Watch Lists - MacUpdate Desktop allows you to easily create lists of your favorite apps, and receive email notifications when new versions are released. Watch Lists also sync automatically with your account on MacUpdate.com, which means that you can be surfing the site, see an app you are interested in, and then add it to your Watch Lists with one click. Then later when you have time or return home, you can have MacUpdate Desktop install it for you with one click. 4) Detailed version information - in MacUpdate Desktop you can view the release notes for the current version of an app right there in one window - the widgets and cnet offer no information on what you are downloading or why you would want to update, or bounce you back and forth between a widget and multiple web pages. 5) More updates - MacUpdate Desktop will find more updates for you than any other app or widget - it covers more than 30,000 applications, widgets, screen savers, and preference panes. We have done a lot of work to make sure that you find all of your available updates automatically - in our tests, the other widgets and application only find 30-60% of the available updates. And finally 6) There is more to come! We have been working on MacUpate Desktop for a while now, and have been tracking Mac apps for over 12 year. We want to help as many Mac users as possible keep their software updated and secure and are dedicated to making MacUpdate Desktop and MacUpdate.com the best way to do that. We appreciate your feedback and are looking forward to more great things to come!

After totally removing MacUpdate Desktop from my computer, including all the files that AppZap got rid of, and the file that Hazel found that AppZap failed to find, I downloaded MUD 5.0.3. Had to enter my user email and password all over again, of course, as expected. Ran the program and the results of the so called 'out-of-date' programs were so off-the-wall... I checked version numbers of programs while running them but MUD said the installed version was something much older! I don't know what's gone wacky here, but I'll wait for the next revision... I have darn near all of my apps on the email me when there's an update, so I can't be THAT far behind as this program is trying to tell me. I'd expect to be told that maybe 3-6 apps were out-of-date. Not 35! Earlier versions (5.0) worked fine for me. (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 In some cases developers may accidentally set the wrong version information in their app, or may submit something different to us, which may account for some of your issues. We work closely with developers to try to resolve these types of problems. You can use the "Set version to current" to override the local version number in these cases. Please send me a screenshot of your outdated apps - desktop@macupdate.com - so that we can verify the status of your apps.

DP8 I reviewed your screenshot and found that most of the apps listed (23/25 shown) are indeed outdated on your system. Two of the applications had conflicting version information as reported by the developer, and I have updated the system to account for those cases. Nothing is wacky on your machine as far as I can see. Please update the apps that you would like to update and you will see that MacUpdate Desktop has correctly identified updates that are newer than what you have. I think that this is one of the main reasons people should use MacUpdate Desktop - it will find 25+ updates for you, even though you thought you might only have 3-6! Feel free to contact us if you need any further assistance.

DANA SUTTON The come-on blurb, presumably supplied by the developer, says "DESCRIPTION MacUpdate Desktop is the best way to automatically keep all the software on your Mac up-to-date. Apple Software Update only updates Apple branded apps. " But in one way, this app. does not match Software Update: that app. periodically self-launches at user-specified intervals, this one only works when the user launches it when and if the user remembers to do that. This would be a lot more useful if it had some kind of automated feature similar to that of Software Update. If it did, I'd give it fives across the board. (Version 5.0.3)

EDIFIED Hi Chad, thanks for the extended trial. Looks like a LOT has been fixed though there's plenty to do (I'm sure you're working hard). As I was running it through it's paces it occurred to me that you might change the shareware restriction to 3 Download Installs/Week. The app could display the number of downloads used/remaining in the bottom right like this: 2 of 3 Installs Used - Register for Unlimited. The advantage is that people can always see how useful the app will be to them with LOTS of red outdated software- of course they can update manually but after a few of these automatic will be pretty tempting. I think it actually might be more restrictive since right now a trial user can update their whole system and then why buy? Finally it solves the whole "extended trial" issue since clearly the app is currently in heavy development with lots of great changes to expect in the next 6 months. Also how about a bugtracker/suggestion system. Trac is fun :) Just an idea :) (Version 5.0.3)

MNM Doing a search for "Appfresh" redirects to the MacUpdate Desktop page. It's hard to believe that it isn't intentional and seems pretty low. Or is it just me? I've used MacUpdate Desktop for the trial period. It's not bad, but the trial period really isn't long enough to bring me to a comfort level where I'd spend $20/year on it. (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 As I have stated in other posts, we provide keyword searching for all applications, and when there is not a direct match, we will try to match the next relevant listing or listings. If an application is discontinued, we will also add keywords for other applications which may help the user. This is not specific to this listing. If you would like an extension to your trial, please let us know - desktop@macupdate.com

ABILSTEIN I am a frequent Macupdate user, and I think you've made a lot of nice improvements to the site recently. However, if you are not listing these other products because you feel that they compete with MUD, then this web site has lost my trust as a Mac software repository. I have no problem with your promotion of your own product, but I really hope you rethink this decision. Your analogies simply do not hold up, and even if they did, it still wouldn't make it okay. People will find out about the software anyway, and when they do they will lose trust in Macupdate as I just did. I highly recommend you read some Seth Godin to learn about social contracts with your customers. (Version 5.0.3)

DP8 Thank you for your feedback. This topic has been thoroughly covered lately, and I don't think we need to restate our position here. I hope that you also try to look at this from our perspective and reconsider what it means for us to be in business, and able to create and offer accurate and timely Mac software listings for free. We understand your position and the importance of doing the right things by our users and customers (only a small fraction of our total users are actually paying customers) and work very hard to be helpful, honest, and fair with everything that we do.

SCRIVENS Just tried 5.0.3 and it is not showing current version number, release date and description for 98% of apps and most are greyed out. 5.0.1 still gives the full display, as did 5.0.2. (Version 5.0.3)
