WHAT'S NEW
CHUD 4.6.1 fixes a variety of bugs and adds support for new hardware.
Significant changes include:
Improved support for iPhone profiling

Please note this page, it should be of special interest to all developers. It demonstrates how to use 'Shark', one of the CHUD tools which can dramatically increase your app's performance. When a developer employs what Apple calls "opportunistic optimization", Shark delivers a big payoff with a little effort. It's the right thing to do.

JOSHK Actually in Tiger the stability problems pretty much disappeared. I have nap enabled all the time on my MDD Dual 1GHz and have not had a problem in over a year of heavy ProTools/Digital Performer, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, or WoW use. (Version 4.3.3)

DALE I have the exact same machine. Which version of CHUD are you using? (Version 4.5)
| Oct 9 2007 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN Dale, you do realize that the parent post was posted almost a year and a half ago? And at that time the current version of CHUD was 4.3.3. The date of the post and the version number which was current at the time of the post is stamped onto the end of the post, as is the case with any and all posts in the reviews section at MacUpdate. TOMIS Yea! The Processor Palette (accessible from the Processor menuextra) doesn't throw an exception now! Right on Apple! (Version 4.22)

ANONYMOUS I have a Dual 1.25GHz mirrored door PowerMac G4. Under Panther, I could use the CHUD tools to put the processor in a nap mode, which kept the processor running substantially cooler. With Tiger, the CHUD tool won't allow me to select "Allow Nap" (Version 4.2a15)

HACKIT98 Use the 3.x version of CHUD to still be able to enable Nap Mode. I use it on my Dual 1.25 G4 with no problems. If you haven't, create an applescript to enable it on boot. (Version 4.2a15)
| Oct 26 2005 |
HENRIK I can confirm this. Downgrading to 3.5.2 put back the 'allow nap' option. Get it at ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Tool_Chest/Testing_-_Debugging/Performance_tools/ (Version 4.22)

UMAROMC I would not recommend this as putting the G4 in nap mode was eliminated because it caused system-wide freezes and kernel panicks. A safer option is to edit Apple's CPU fan kernel extension's Property List fan table to speed up to higher RPMs at lower temperatures— CHUD tools or not I never run above 119°F with my settings. Here's more info (it's a Google-cached page since the original doesn't seem to be up anymore): http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:FrNbfQyBy1YJ:homepage.mac.com/paul74/MDDFanExtensionMod.htm+fan-speed-table&hl=en&client=firefox-a%20target=nw BTW- I've a MDD G4 as well and this works perfectly... ZEB Does anyone know if this version, 4.0.2, allows you to turn NAP on and off in Hardware prefs? Turning off NAP seems to be the only fix for a squeeling PSU in G5's. (Version 4.0.2)

THEL I can't say re: 4.0.2 - I'm still downloading the installer - but 4.0.1's "Processor" pref pane has a Nap checkbox for on & off switching here. (My Mac is the May '03 1 GHz G4 eMac Combo model, in case that makes any difference...?) (Version 4.0.2)

ZEN TAXI Yes, The NAP on/off switch is still there! (Version 4.1)

ANONYMOUS ummm does no one use this for its intended purpose/? (Version 4.1)
| Mar 8 2005 |
TNH sure, but asking about nap is kinda relevant as Nap wouldn't stick in the last release. Of course people do use it for things it wasn't intended for because it's useful. So I'll ask. Does nap stick in the prefs now on restarts or do I have to keep checking? (Version 4.1)
| Mar 9 2005 |
ANONYMOUS perhaps it doesn't stick because it's not meant to stick, because CHUD's intended purpose is performance testing of software, not altering your hardware parameters. (Version 4.1)
| Jun 28 2005 |
ANONYMOUS If Apple helped us keep our processors from overheating there would be no need to use it for anything else. (Version 4.2a15)

ANONYMOUS >perhaps it doesn't stick because it's not meant to stick, because CHUD's intended purpose is performance testing of software, not altering your hardware parameters. (3/9/2005, Version: 4.1) If Apple managed to make chirp-free PSUs, there's be no point in using it other than its intended purpose. (Version 4.22)

ANONYMOUS The CHUD tools are great, especially Shark. Just open Shark up, start some executable, and tell Shark to start sampling. You instantly find out what are the hot loops, load/store problems, etc. One minor warning about the update: If previously you double-clicked on a source-code line number in the profile view to see Shark's annotations to your source, you'll be disappointed. This feature isn't working in Shark 4. (Version 4.0)

JACQUES After installing CHUD 4.0b6 on my G4 OS 10.3.5, the G4 was unable to boot! I disovered that the next day and my automatic back up app had already cloned the main drive on the back up drive. The back up drive was unable to boot too. I had to reinstall the OS from DVD, update it, etc. I reinstalled CHUD on the back up drive just to verify -> unable to boot again. Thanks CHUD. ANONYMOUS Of course, being the well trained developer that you are, you knew better than to install a beta, that is what the b stands for in the version number, on your primary patition. Right? Didn't think so. (Version 4.1)

ANONYMOUS Of course not. I also run the Tiger beta and call Apple support constantly to complain about whats not ready yet. (Version 4.1.1)

I've had CHUD tools installed since who knows when. No problems here. (G3 iBook, OS X 10.3.8 currently) Proper and preventive maintenance, anyone? (Version 4.1.1)

ANONYMOUS Huhhuhh, Huhhhih, I've got CHUD. You disable nap, in the System Prefs, at the bottom where the new module is loaded, after you install CHUD. Personally, I've got a Dual 1.8 and it does NOT have the noise problem. Is it possible Apple did a quite revision? Or am I just lucky? (Version 4.0b5)

LORO i just downloaded the application , ih ave a g5 too, can you tell me how you use the application to reduce the noise with g5 thanks for your time (Version 3.0.4)
| May 16 2004 |
CAPN HACK turning off "nap" mode for your processors is what is said to fix the noise issue with some g5s. it will make the processors run hotter tho, so if you can bear to hear that noise sometimes then its a good idea to put nap back on (especially those times when youre using your processors heavily). turning off the second processor will also slow the fans and reduce noise (Version 3.5.1)
