DESCRIPTION
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection enables you to connect from your Macintosh computer to a Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that computer. Mac users who have access to a Windows-based computer on a network, can use Remote Desktop Connection as an alternative to Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac.

To connect to a Windows-based computer, you need network access and permission to connect to the computer. In addition, the Windows-based computer must be running Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services. The following Windows products support Remote Desktop connections:

  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0:
  • Universal Binary - Runs natively on both Intel-based and PowerPC-based Macs.
  • Remote Desktop Protocol 6.0 - Provides better compatibility with Windows Vista, improved security features, and many other improvements.
  • Multiple Sessions - Lets you connect to multiple Windows-based computers at the same time.
  • Improved User Experience - Provides a true Mac experience and improved usability.

  • Improved Printing Support - Supports all configured printers on your Mac. No longer limited to PostScript printers.
  • Multiple Sessions (Improved in Beta 2) - Improvements to File menu commands and connection files let you connect to multiple Windows-based computers at the same time.

VISKWAL  Typical of microsoft, international keyboards still don't work in the release version.

This has been reported over and over through the course of the beta.

N. SILVA  Very nice remote desktop client. In some ways it's superior to the Windows version. For example, with the Mac RDC client, you can connect to a server's console by adding "/CONSOLE" to the end of the computer name, something that requires editing a config file on the Windows side.

Some users may still prefer CoRD, however, because of the way that the Microsoft client handles saved connections. (The preferences dialog is used to change settings in a way that's hard to explain and often has me overwriting saved connections with the wrong settings.)

The other thing that could be improved is the Dock display. If you're connected to several servers, it's hard to tell which Dock icon represents which server. The server name is on the icon, but it's often too tiny to see.

MACINSPORE  Fast and stable. Local Hard Drive sharing seems to have a few glitches, but I don't really need this feature.

I am a long time user of Tight VNC with Chicken VNC or Jolly VNC as Mac clients. Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection 2.0 is MUCH faster and has less screen artifacts in comparison.

Well done Microhoo!

FOLLEREC  I'm usually critical of Microsoft software, but this is not bad. Not bad at all. I wish it had a "bookmark" sidebar similar to CoRD instead of having to save .rdp files. Still, it's small, quick, and stable.

PAULNOJUSTPAUL  While this does the job adequately and it is still technically a beta, I can't help but see it as a big step backwards from v1.0.3.

Still no real multiple sessions (I don't think multiple saved sessions cuts it), and it lacks the speed and stability the earlier version had. Has MacBU just given up on this? They've shown us before they're capable of far better efforts.

I hope the final version will make me eat those words, but for now I'd second Josh and say CoRD walks all over this. Either that or try RDC 1.0.3 with RDC Launcher.
