HOMER1  I have been using Bookit for a few years now. Briefly tried Bookdog but found it confusing at best. I'm sure it works well, I just didn't care for the interface.

Due to a HD failure I lost most of my shareware registrations, Bookit included. Earlier this week I sent an email to the developer and yesterday morning in my in-box was a very courteous response with my registration code included. I installed the software under Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and it functions perfectly.

Granted, I only use Safari and Camino as my browsers so the lack of Firefox support does not affect me. Still, given that these are shareware developers, who have outside jobs to actually be able to pay their bills, I think some of the recent reviews/comments of this software are a bit out of line. Just my two cents.

DMORGAN  This is just to let the developer know that because Bookit has NOT been kept up to date with OS and browser releases, I'm going to start looking for a replacement bookmark synching app. Bookit is great at what it does (more like what it did) but it doesn't do two things that I believe are essential: it won't synch the latest version of Firefox, and it doesn't use Synch Services, forcing one to manually synchronize bookmarks to keep things aligned. Too bad. Many requests from different users have gone completely unanswered, and I believe Bookit should be declared legally dead, we celebrate it's life and now, we move on. Any response from the developer would be appreciated.

AARGL  Well, while I understand Xenophile, Bookit remains a great app, and I still use it except for Firefox 3 (as a workaround, I've tried Bookdog which GUI is a pain in the arse compared to Bookit, but works with any browser...).

As I don't often use Firefox 3 (Camino is great for common browsing, and now Safari 4 is out with speed and many features you previously only had in its competitors, I don't often feel the need to use Firefox anymore...).

XENOPHILE  Abandonware.

As a longtime Bookit user, I'm a bit disappointed by the developer's inability to maintain compatibility with popular OS X browsers. Firefox 3 has been out for ages - already at version 3.0.11 - yet Bookit remains unable to sync Firefox 3 bookmarks.

When I purchased Bookit 3, the developer advertised it as a tool for syncing bookmarks among common Mac OS X browsers, which is perfect for me because I use Safari as my main browser and fall back on Firefox for a handful of critical sites that render Safari impotent. Bookit is one of the few shareware apps I've ever bought, and it's a workhorse; simple and powerful and, once properly set up, it makes the ordeal of managing bookmarks virtually effortless.

So when Firefox 3 was released and I found that Bookit didn't support it, I figured the developer had a life and an update would be forthcoming in a few weeks. A month went by, then two, and still no update, so I contacted the developer and was told there would be no update. Well he didn't exactly say that, but his reply was similar to the current excuse posted on his blog.

The developers explained that Mozilla released Firefox 3 at an "inopportune time" because they're currently "knee deep on Bookit 4 (which supports Firefox 3) and aren't quite done with it."

Well, I must admit it was pretty rude of Mozilla to release Firefox while Everyday Software was up to their knees in Bookit 4, but if I'm patient Bookit will eventually be updated so I can use it again, right? Actually, wrong. The developers state that "if you buy Bookit now, you'll get Bookit 4 free, so don't worry about that." I'm a loyal user who licensed Bookit 3 some time ago, so it looks like I'd better start worrying.

Now what do I do? The developer helpfully offers a suggestion:

"all we ask from you is a little patience while we wrap it up. You see, We do this little operation in our free time after our regular 9 to 5 so development isn't as fast as everyone (including us) would like..."

They go knee deep in Bookit on their free time, but that doesn't make it freeware, does it?

"...With the 'I want it yesterday' attitude of the internet these days it will be hard for some, but I have confidence most of you will be able to do it."

No, that's not the attitude of "the internet," it's the attitude of paying customers, and good businessmen catered to that attitude long before the internet existed.

"For the next couple months, your Firefox 3 bookmarks won't be in sync, but listen - it will be OK - trust me."

I used Safari and Firefox for years before buying Bookit, and guess what? It was "ok". I payed the developers money because Bookit was an exceptional tool that made switching between Safari and Firefox effortless. Bookit no longer does what I bought it to do, and if I want its functionality restored, I'll have to pay for a new version of Bookit.

The developers conclude their rant by telling registered Bookit users what they can go do with themselves:

"how about you take a big deep breath and do something enjoyable with your time. Luckily, it's summer and there are a lot of great things to do outside while you wait for Bookit 4."

How professional. I suggest the developers also do something enjoyable with their free time, because not many Bookit users are going to be paying for that knee-deep update.

OLDCORPSE  I've been using this app for over a year, and I was quite happy with it. Unfortunately, I switched to FF3, and now this is useless.

FF3 has now been out for how long? And still no support for it from this app? Lame.

The developers being irritated by users wanting FF3 support - unacceptable. I mean, this is the whole point of this app - to synch bookmarks from Safari to other browsers... and the most common browser alternative is FF. I can understand not getting support right after it came out, but it's been months now.

There is no point in this app as long as it does not support the most commonly used browser out there on OS X other than Safari.

So, off it goes from my system. On to other alternatives. And such clueless developers with attitude - I don't want to support anyway. There are far too many deserving developers out there to waste your money on a useless product and arrogant people, so vote with your pocketbook.

STEVE HODGSON  While I wasn't particularly bothered by the developers' post regarding FF3 updates I did get fed up that Firefox support looks like it is not a priority and also that OmniWeb did not sync particularly well IME.

Bookdog seems a much more powerful alternative.

SGMILLER  I complained to the Devs about the lack of FF3 support by saying the situation was "a bit lame". This was the response:

"Frankly put, if you don't like it, use something else."

This was followed by a long email exchange wherethey explained how "offended" they were by my comment.

CYBERATOMIC  Bummer... still no support for Firefox 3!

I was so excited to see this app show up with an update - and it was such a disappointment to see that it still didn't fix the support for FF3.

I am a huge fan of this app and have been using it forever - but unfortunately I also use Firefox 3 and because of that, I had to move to Bookdog which supports FF3.

WHYME?  So I have Book-it or I thought I did and then suddenly it upgrades and doesn't take my registration number. The software doesn't do anything new. It looks exactly the same and as far as I can tell they are punishing those who paid for this software by an upgrade that doesn't do anything new. I was not contacted, so I wasted a few hours trying to figure out why my reg # isn't working, wrote them an e-mail. Asked what the deal is. If there is an upgrade do we get some sort of benefit or price break? Then I went to Kagi and found that they said it was 6 dollars for an upgrade to number 3. I guess I'm 1 or 2 but I don't know why. Kagi's website says that there is an extra charge for the luxury service of going through them. Ok fine. This is getting into the hours range in tempo and who knows what else might befall me at this rate. So I fill in the info the pay-pal already supplies, hit the button and nothing. It takes me to my pay-pal account. After 5-6 times I am starting to feel like a sucker. There has to be an easier way. I think I will just back up computer tonight and save time.
