GREGM  Dangit!!!

My dock no longer functions beyond getting the command balloons up. They don't respond and just hang there 'til I move my cursor to "Finder" in my top menu bar. Grrrrr

Yes, I did run a permissions repair.

DANA SUTTON  The link to the Knowledge Base article leads to a page where there is no information that I can find pertinent to the present release. It fries my hide when ANYBODY releases software without telling the user what he's getting. Applie is no exception. As I've said in connection with other such releases, this is like distributing some packaged food without supplying the customer with a list of its contents. I wouldn't put any such stuff in my mouth, and I'm not too happy about putting its equivalentin my computer.

SJK  > What's the problem?

Often there's a delay before the general "Apple security updates" page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222), that you'll reach via the MacUpdate "More Information" link, shows the latest "Name and information link" (e.g. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4004, which kobalt's comment provided a direct link to).

Happened to me again with this update. When I checked yesterday the former page didn't have the info/link for the latter but this morning it did.

JAZZYGUY  I am SO sick of installing these security updates! EVERY single one requires APPLEJACK to fix caches, permissions and virtual memory! Every single one changes permissions from rw,rw ,r to lrw,lr. ENOUGH already! I have updated on all 6 of my Macs and their respective back up Hard drives all with the same volume and all running 10.5.8. To go through this is just TOO much! When will Apple learn to configure an update that doesn't mess with our permissions!

ILGAZ  A company which rejects to fix their own file sharing protocol's (AFP) security issues on 10.4.11 Tiger.

Still curious about why Enterprise/Business doesn't take Apple serious?

RONL  G5 tower would not restart after update.

I never had this happen before and I have used Macs for well over a decade.

Also there was no spinning progress indicator.

I waited around ten minutes and finally did a hard restart.

Makes me wonder how many other things Apple missed.

DRG  With this latest security update, both my machines were no longer connected to the internet. I had to restart my router and modem and internet access was restored. Never had this happen before with a security update!

OINCE  This update on a g4 imac was NOT able to complete and put into the trash to try later.

I attempted to restart to retry and got stuck on the grey apple screen.

I was able to boot from Tiger install dvd and run disk utility to repair permissions and disk. Still not able to boot from hard drive.

Booted again from Tiger install dvd and set startup drive to os9. Was able to boot os9 and noticed the time was off. Figured the eight year old battery may have given up. Replaced the pram battery.

Startup from HD still stalls at grey apple screen.

Sometimes I can boot from dvd other times it just ejects. Am trying to do a archive and install 10.4.

Is it a bad update?

Any ideas?

Anyone else stuck like this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless you are running the version of 10.4 that is on your installation DVD, you should not repair disk permissions while booted from the DVD. The default permissions change with the OS updates, so if you run 10.4.11 and repair permissions using 10.4.3 (for example) your permissions will definitely be incorrect. Use the Disk Utility application from your applications folder for repairing permissions, and use Disk Utility booted from the DVD to repair the disk.

I have updated three G3s running Tiger with the update and had no problems. It did not take as long as the last security update, and generated less hard drive noise than its predecessor. (Thankfully.) Did you get things to work on your G4? Have you run Applejack? Personally, I never bother with archive-and-install. If I am reinstalling, I: download/burn all the needed Apple updates to CD (I don't trust Software Update); backup; test the backup; boot to Tiger DVD; open Disk Utility; zero out the disk; boot OS 9 CD; reinstall OS 9; update to OS 9.2.2; boot Tiger DVD; install Tiger; apply combo update, security update, Quicktime, java, etc.; install latest versions of apps compatible w/Tiger; drag over any wanted data from my backup. I repair permissions in Tiger after installation, combo update, security update, iTunes update and Safari update. Erase/install is faster than archive/install, but it takes a while. I feel this method saves disk space and lessens the chance that any corrupted data will be carried over with the reinstallation. Just my opinion, and this methods works well for me. YMMV.
