ESMITH512 I just spent about half an hour enjoying Apple Security Update 2009-001 on several of my Macs. (I always put on my Mac Exorcist hat when I update this stuff anymore.) The stand-alone iBook updates were uneventfully routine, but a G4 Mac mini I use for network and storage services stalled, rebooted a couple times, and commanded the UPS to shut down the system after a very long screen-off delay. After reboot, the ethernet port (en0) shut itself off several times while attempting to connect to the system's DSL modem and was confusing the ISP when the ethernet port (en0) was active. I verified the DSL modem with a Linux notebook, verified the DSL modem, router, and ISP--all worked flawlessly under Linux. All systems are running MacOS 10.4.11 (networks are better on Tiger) and always have been kept up to date. On the Mac mini G4 network/file server, I went to Mac OS's network configuration assistant from the network control panel and re-entered the DSL login information, after which the system resumed normal operation without further incident. DRG With this latest security update, both my machines were no longer connected to the internet. I had to restart my router and modem and internet access was restored. Never had this happen before with a security update! (Version 2009-004)

OINCE This update on a g4 imac was NOT able to complete and put into the trash to try later. I attempted to restart to retry and got stuck on the grey apple screen. I was able to boot from Tiger install dvd and run disk utility to repair permissions and disk. Still not able to boot from hard drive. Booted again from Tiger install dvd and set startup drive to os9. Was able to boot os9 and noticed the time was off. Figured the eight year old battery may have given up. Replaced the pram battery. Startup from HD still stalls at grey apple screen. Sometimes I can boot from dvd other times it just ejects. Am trying to do a archive and install 10.4. Anyone else stuck like this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless you are running the version of 10.4 that is on your installation DVD, you should not repair disk permissions while booted from the DVD. The default permissions change with the OS updates, so if you run 10.4.11 and repair permissions using 10.4.3 (for example) your permissions will definitely be incorrect. Use the Disk Utility application from your applications folder for repairing permissions, and use Disk Utility booted from the DVD to repair the disk. I have updated three G3s running Tiger with the update and had no problems. It did not take as long as the last security update, and generated less hard drive noise than its predecessor. (Thankfully.) Did you get things to work on your G4? Have you run Applejack? Personally, I never bother with archive-and-install. If I am reinstalling, I: download/burn all the needed Apple updates to CD (I don't trust Software Update); backup; test the backup; boot to Tiger DVD; open Disk Utility; zero out the disk; boot OS 9 CD; reinstall OS 9; update to OS 9.2.2; boot Tiger DVD; install Tiger; apply combo update, security update, Quicktime, java, etc.; install latest versions of apps compatible w/Tiger; drag over any wanted data from my backup. I repair permissions in Tiger after installation, combo update, security update, iTunes update and Safari update. Erase/install is faster than archive/install, but it takes a while. I feel this method saves disk space and lessens the chance that any corrupted data will be carried over with the reinstallation. Just my opinion, and this methods works well for me. YMMV. MAGLET After running this update my sytem crashed and I had to reinstall. After running the update again after a fresh install I'm now back with a broken system again. System update crashes. Safari crashes. I'm not able to run .pkg and reinstall 2008-007 or System combo update 10.4.11 because they also crashes. I think is has to do with Webkit framework because the nightly build from http://nightly.webkit.org/ run whithout a problem. But I dont know how to install a new webkit. The safari .pkg install from apple.com crashes as well when I try to install. I have run permissions and drive repair from the MacOS install CD. I also tried to run in fail safe mode. Nothing works. Is there a fix to this! (Version 2008-007)

KINNICCHICK Afraid I can't be of help, Maglet... am having the same problem. Am sitting here now having to use husband's windows machine because I'm stuck with a MacBook Pro that will not get beyond the gray screen with spinning wheel of frustration to boot since the error on trying to download this security piece. ERICG I have had the same problem, but not quite as extreme. After the installation, the powerbook would start after a long delay. I can open apps, but the whole system freezes after a minute or two. I am currently trying to install the original Leopard. What a disaster. (Version 2008-008)

MAGLET My system update crashed when running this update. Dont remember the reason given. Anyway, I could not start ANY new programs after the update failed. And the computer does not start up. To apples defense I can say I had the CS3 suite running while running the system update. So, I had to reinstall the system. (Version 2008-007)

PFACKELMANN After installing this update (Mac OS X - PowerPC (67.8MB)) and launching Control Network "Your network preferences have been changed by another program" I have to force System Controls to quit. Another restart doesn't help. Can't use System Control Network. (Powerbook, PowerPC G3, 10.4.11) As I use a German system the terms used may be not 100% exact. (Version 2008-006)

GREENMANYYZ I'm seeing the same thing... G4 dual 500 10.4.11 I run Applejack (in SUM mode) prior to any updates... install update, run Applejack again and restart System Pref's - Network - and almost immediately a window pops up saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application" Clicking 'OK' just pops it back up again. Have to quickly quit System Pref.'s after OK'ing the alert. (Version 2008-006)

NORTHERNSPY Regarding the "Your network settings have been changed by another application" pop-up window that won't go away: I just had this problem, and here's how I fixed it. I do not know if the results are reproducible (and I don't want to have to find out ;-) Click on the OK button in the error window, and VERY QUICKLY, before it pops up again, click anything within Network window to navigate further. (At this point, the pop-up stopped for me.) I then made a small change in the settings and saved. (I don't know making the small change was necessary.) Good luck! (Version 2008-006)

LEFTUNKNOWN This update came up on my wives ibook G4 Software Updates and she downloaded as we all do whatever SU says. The download hung up or quit during "optimizing system performance" and she restarted the computer and tried again with "success." Now, the ibook is junked up. itunes & safari won't open (who knows what else). The menu bar is missing airport and time/date. I try to verify the HD from the install disc and all I get are errors. Currently trying to run disk warrior but its hanging up and says "speed inhibited by disk malfunction." I've read that even if i reformat the HD, the issue might just return (i.e. never go away). If anyone can help, please do. (Version )

AETNARIA I'd suggest you download the combo update for your current OS version (10.4.11 I'm assuming), and reinstall that over what you have right now. Then go ahead and run the other updates (without interruption this time, hopefully). It's worth a shot at least, and is easier than wiping the HD and doing a clean install. (Version )

LEFTUNKNOWN ya, i should have done that... although a clean install was VERY good for her jam packed HD, and I was able to NOT install some of the unnecessary apps which gave her more space in the end. Now it runs like new. We just elected to NOT reinstall the security update and still we're extremely hesitant to. (Version )
