DESCRIPTION
LiteSwitch X follows the tradition of LiteSwitch as a simple solution
for managing open applications using the keyboard. Like its predecessor
which will continue to be available, LiteSwitch X has a clean, simple
and functional style that has become Proteron's hallmark. It features
an aquified transparent, resizeable window which is invoked by a
configurable key-combination (default is Apple-Tab). From the pop-up
window the user can switch to any application, hide, quit, or force quit
any application or drag-and-drop files onto any application. Windows
users migrating to the Macintosh can feel more at home having the
Alt-tab functionality returned to them, yet enjoy it in its full Mac OS
X splendor.

PETERNSTEINMETZ This is a 32 bit control panel, so requires a restart of System Preferences under Snow Leopard -- annoying, but works. As to Proteron, LLC, it is listed as an inactive corporation by the state of Nebraska for non-payment of taxes. The registered agent, Neill Mollard, of Omaha, NE doesn't appear to have a phone number in whitepages. But perhaps someone in Omaha might be able to reach him. The other developers, Ammon Skidmore, Samuel and Matthew Caughron seem to have moved out west. Would be nice to get the source or an update, that is for sure. (Version 2.6)

DOUG ENGELBART Much more comfortable than Apple's built-in Cmd-Tab application switcher. Still working flawlessly on my G4 1.2 GHz with OSX.5.8 (Leo) ... as it did in OSX.2 (Jaguar) to OSX.4 (Tiger). (Version 2.6)

NICKSLOAN Who can say what lies behind the disappearance of Proteron? There could be any number of reasons, but they leave two exceptional apps marooned. I wish that somebody would pass on the code for LiteSwitch and Maxmenus to another developer—or even that someone would pick up the same concept (particularly for LiteSwitch) and run with it. The idea of a simple keyboard-controlled switcher of running apps, that supports exclusions and interactions, is too good to die. Witch could fill the role with a few tweaks, but as of now there is no viable replacement for LiteSwitch. (Version 2.6)

JMICHAELS Take a look at Keyboard Maestro when the new version come out. Little did I know, that even now, it is a string competitor to liteswitch x, though they do not take over command-tab, since there is no official way to do so with Apple's API. Apparently there now is an official way, and the new version may have this feature. There is so much more you can do with Keyboard Maestro that is useful as well. Not to mention, the best support I have had for a product. (Version 2.6)

NICKSLOAN Yes, thanks for the suggestion Michaels, KM probably is the nearest thing, and I loved its predecessor Program Switcher in OS9, but for me KM comes with a ton of redundancy, I can't get app exclusions to work properly, and it doesn't offer useful little touches like Show in Finder or the ability to drag files onto app icons to open. JMICHAELS I have used LiteSwitch X for as long as I can remember, essentially since it was first released. The one point everyone hear needs to take away from this, is that no matter how good the software is, it is garbage if the developers do not respect their users. The developers, or owners of Proteron, have zero respect for their users. They Web site has been down for over a year, leaving users stranded to ask around for a shared copy if your lost yours and needed to reinstall. There is no official announcement of whether or not it works with Snow Leopard. I believe you can find the developers on twitter, and a basic search shows there are unanswered questions about this product. Even if they were to release a new updated version, with Snow support, and have a new website, I could never give these guys my money again. Even if it were free, I would not use it. There is a level of communication that a developer and company should have with their users. It is not hard to come here, and version tracker, or put up a page on their site, explaining they have stopped working on the software. I suggest everyone here, no matter how much you like this software, take into consideration, how you are being treated by someone who you have paid money to. This has been going on too long, too many unanswered emails, too many blog posts from users who have no idea what is going on. These guys should be ashamed, as it is clear fro their blogs and twitter posts, they have the ability to post something, they just chose to not care about those of us who have come to rely on their software. If anyone has any suggestions for an alternative, please post it here, as we all need to move away to something that will treat users with respect. (Version 2.6)

DAVE H. Snow Leopard really hosed this, at least for me. To have it work as expected I have to go into System Prefs and quit and restart it after I restart my machine, which, admittedly, isn't often, but it's still 'something else' I have to do to in order to have things run the way I like under SL. CLAKES Desperate (useless?) call to the devs: _Please_ ... I love this app. I can't think of my Mac without it. Don't give this one up. It's worth it, for me and a lot of other people, including the ones who haven't even got to know about LiteSwitch X. (Version 2.6)

FRED KLEIN Incompatibility found with Screen Sharing in 10.5.7 Switching away from Screen Sharing using command+tab in LiteSwitch X, ends up "leaving" the command key "pressed" in Screen Sharing: any further clicks behave like command+clicks. Disabling LiteSwitch X solves the issue. see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2094309 Too bad Proteron is gone and there is no fix to this. (Version 2.6)

STORMCHILD I used to swear by LiteSwitch (I've been using it for around 10 years now!), but lately, I find myself swearing *at* it. It occasionally gets into a state where it fails to notice when you launch new apps, so they don't show up in the switcher. Quitting and relaunching LiteSwitch temporarily "fixes" it, but it soon happens again and again, and I've found that the only way to actually fix it is to restart -- which, quite frankly, I find completely unacceptable. Even just relaunching LiteSwitch is not an acceptable fix either, because it restarts the Dock every time you close *and* open LiteSwitch (two Dock restarts per relaunch of LS) -- and that gets to be a real pain in the a s s (btw, MacUpdate, comment censorship is extremely lame), cause it closes all your Dashboard widgets, and forces QuickLook to rescan all the items in any stacks you may have on the Dock. I hate to say it, but it's come to the point where the problems outweigh the benefits, so I can no longer recommend this abandonware. Here's hoping Apple improves the default cmd-tab switcher, cause I just can't put up with the bugs in LiteSwitch anymore. Seems like Proteron simply stopped caring. Too bad. (Version 2.6)
