DESCRIPTION
LiteSwitch X follows the tradition of LiteSwitch as a simple solution for managing open applications using the keyboard. Like its predecessor which will continue to be available, LiteSwitch X has a clean, simple and functional style that has become Proteron's hallmark. It features an aquified transparent, resizeable window which is invoked by a configurable key-combination (default is Apple-Tab). From the pop-up window the user can switch to any application, hide, quit, or force quit any application or drag-and-drop files onto any application. Windows users migrating to the Macintosh can feel more at home having the Alt-tab functionality returned to them, yet enjoy it in its full Mac OS X splendor.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.6:

New features:

  • Universal binary
  • Added preference to disable key repeat (selection advancement when the hotkey is held)
  • Integration with Cocoatech's PathFinder (if running, it is used instead of the Finder)
Other notable changes:
  • Mac OS X 10.4 is now the minimum requirement
  • Fixed a couple rare crashes (thanks for the reports!)
  • Switcher window no longer shifts under the Dock and menubar when a contextual menu is displayed
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

NICKSLOAN  Who can say what lies behind the disappearance of Proteron? There could be any number of reasons, but they leave two exceptional apps marooned. I wish that somebody would pass on the code for LiteSwitch and Maxmenus to another developer—or even that someone would pick up the same concept (particularly for LiteSwitch) and run with it. The idea of a simple keyboard-controlled switcher of running apps, that supports exclusions and interactions, is too good to die. Witch could fill the role with a few tweaks, but as of now there is no viable replacement for LiteSwitch.

JMICHAELS  Take a look at Keyboard Maestro when the new version come out. Little did I know, that even now, it is a string competitor to liteswitch x, though they do not take over command-tab, since there is no official way to do so with Apple's API.

Apparently there now is an official way, and the new version may have this feature. There is so much more you can do with Keyboard Maestro that is useful as well. Not to mention, the best support I have had for a product.

NICKSLOAN  Yes, thanks for the suggestion Michaels, KM probably is the nearest thing, and I loved its predecessor Program Switcher in OS9, but for me KM comes with a ton of redundancy, I can't get app exclusions to work properly, and it doesn't offer useful little touches like Show in Finder or the ability to drag files onto app icons to open.

ENLIGHTENED411  Last year I downloaded (vsn 2.6) and tried it for a month. Here's my Review:

( Note: Apple's built-in App-Switcher is: [apple]+[tab] )

(+) PROS:

* + Multiple Hot-Key Activation Choices

o + Right-Mousers can more easily activate it ( e.g., [control]+[tab] )

o + And Likewise for Left-Mousers ( e.g., [control]+[return] )

* + You can EASILY step-navigate through apps by releasing and pressing the 2nd Hot-Key key (to Reverse direction press the [shift] key as the 2nd key instead).

* + Right-Click an App's icon to see Contextual Menu Options (or use Keyboard Shortcuts INSTEAD)

* + Provides MANY Options you can set in System Preferences

(-) CONS:

* - Can NOT [esc] from it IF Hot-Key is set to: [apple]+[tab]

* - If you've just hidden an app and then quickly depress and release the Hot-Key, it re-activates the Hidden App. It should NOT do that. What it should do instead is Select the Next ACTIVE App below the one on top (which is standard OS X behavior).

* - Developer never responded to my Important Email Inquiry (and why I never bought it)

* - NOT updated since 7-06 (1.5 yr)

* - When Intel Macs were released it took 1-YEAR for an Intel-compatible update

Summary ( RATING: 3 / 5 ): A real Time-Saver. It makes app-switching easier & brings new useful features into this process.

IF the Developer was responsive to emails and updated this app more frequently I'd raise my rating to 4 / 5.

What would Help? Surely these Enhancements would be meaningful:

1. SEGREGATE Active and Hidden Apps into Distinct Groupings wherein Active ones are navigated first. Either:

a. Place Active on LHS and Hidden to the RHS, OR

b. Place Active on Top and Hidden below in a 2nd list

2. If you HIDE an App (with LSX) it should Behave just like Mac OS and auto-select the front most Active App.

CRUCIAL to any software purchase is the Developer's commitment to their customers needs and wants. If a Developer is not giving adequate consideration to customer needs; and is not planning ahead of the upcoming OS changes; then their product is not a worthy investment.

* Usage Tip: In order to confidently rely on the use of the [esc] key I recommend you NOT use [apple]+[tab] as the designated Hot-Key.

STORMCHILD  Good, detailed list. Just one thing though -- pressing Esc to dismiss LiteSwitch works fine for me, and I use Command-Tab (aka "Apple"-Tab), so there must be some kind of specific issue there. Even so, this adds more weight to your point about how infrequently (and slowly) LiteSwitch gets updated. I just wish Apple's rip-off of LiteSwitch* was good enough that I could get rid of LiteSwitch, as in general I'm always trying to eliminate as many 3rd party tweaks and enhancements as possible.

* Let's face it, that's what it is, but sadly it's only a half-assed rip-off at that.

DOUG ENGELBART  Much more comfortable than Apple's built-in Cmd-Tab application switcher. Still working flawlessly on my G4 1.2 GHz with OSX.5.8 (Leo) ... as it did in OSX.2 (Jaguar) to OSX.4 (Tiger).

It would be great to see an update.

DAVE H.  Snow Leopard really hosed this, at least for me. To have it work as expected I have to go into System Prefs and quit and restart it after I restart my machine, which, admittedly, isn't often, but it's still 'something else' I have to do to in order to have things run the way I like under SL.

PETERNSTEINMETZ  Next version of Keyboard Maestro (and the current beta) handles command-tab, which was my only reason for continuing to use LiteSwitch.

PETERNSTEINMETZ  This is a 32 bit control panel, so requires a restart of System Preferences under Snow Leopard -- annoying, but works.

As to Proteron, LLC, it is listed as an inactive corporation by the state of Nebraska for non-payment of taxes. The registered agent, Neill Mollard, of Omaha, NE doesn't appear to have a phone number in whitepages. But perhaps someone in Omaha might be able to reach him.

The other developers, Ammon Skidmore, Samuel and Matthew Caughron seem to have moved out west. Would be nice to get the source or an update, that is for sure.

CLAKES  Desperate (useless?) call to the devs:

_Please_ ... I love this app. I can't think of my Mac without it.

Don't give this one up. It's worth it, for me and a lot of other people, including the ones who haven't even got to know about LiteSwitch X.

FRED KLEIN  Incompatibility found with Screen Sharing in 10.5.7

Switching away from Screen Sharing using command+tab in LiteSwitch X, ends up "leaving" the command key "pressed" in Screen Sharing: any further clicks behave like command+clicks.

Disabling LiteSwitch X solves the issue.

Too bad Proteron is gone and there is no fix to this.

THEC13  Is this a dead application? I mean it hasn't been updated in two years.
