DESCRIPTION
Fink uses Debian tools like dpkg and apt-get to provide powerful binary package management. You can choose whether you want to download precompiled binary packages or build everything from source.
APPLECRYPT MODS fink is fantastic and opens up a whole new world. I've only just discovered all this and i've got gimp plus some office applications open on my KDE Desktop :D Good stuff!
Thank you to all the fink developers and all that help and support. Brilliant job - my thanks and respect. (Version 0.8.0)
ANONYMOUS I don't understand why people write reviews when they don't know what they're talking about. Fink does install from sources - not just binaries. Depending on your machine, installing from source can take a long time, and can chew up a lot of drive space in the mean time.
Installing from source will never be as simple as installing a binary, because compilation depends upon a lot of factors - libraries, headers, etc. Fink goes a long way to making it simple, though. (Version 0.7.1)
RICH It's very easy to use (for example) Gimp on Windows... until it refuses to work. And then what? How do you recompile it?
Fink doesn't just make it easy to compile & install pacakges optimized for your personal system, it makes it virtually guaranteed that you're getting the latest (yes: latest) working version.
Of course, if you want to switch to unstable sources, that's up to you...
Don't talk about something you know nothing about. (Version 0.7.1)

ANONYMOUS Reviewer is clueless. Fink DOES allow you to install from sources, from either a stable or unstable tree. (Version 0.7.1)

ANONYMOUS Can't install the last version of scribus, Fink says:
Can't resolve dependency "gcc3.1" for package "xfree86-4.4.0-13"
ANONYMOUS I had the same problem. Obtain XCode and look in the packages folder. There you will find the gcc3.1.pkg. Install this and fink will no longer complain. (Version 0.7.1)

X Amazing utility, very easy to use with FinkCommander. Stable in OS 10,3,5. Now it is easy to use great Linux apps like Scribus or xscorch ;-) Once again OS X rules, with the very best of Mac / Linux / Windows. (Version 0.7.1)
ANONYMOUS Great product, opens the door to a fantastic array of software. In my case with Evolution I can access Microsoft Exchange on my Mac. To make it easier try loading FinkCommander which adds a handy GUI interface http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8128 (Version 0.7.1)
BRIAN KENDIG A simple way to get useful software, but it's poorly documented, and there's no way to change the directory it uses from the weird nonstandard "/sw" to an appropriate place like "/usr/local/fink". (Version 0.7.0)
ANONYMOUS Obviously you have not read the documentation which is plentyfull and on http://fink.sf.net/.
Of course you can install Fink under a different prefix but it is not recommended. The FAQ explains very well why it is under /sw and not in the wrong place, like /usr/local/foo. If you plan to install it in a standard palce you should put it into /opt/fink (Version 0.7.0)
