EDITOR NOTES

This is a beta release. See Related Links for the last stable releases.

DESCRIPTION
Audacity is a free audio recorder/editor/mixer. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.3.10:

Bug fixes for:

  • Imports and Exports:
    • Freeze importing audio files when Default View Mode set to Pitch (EAC)
    • Simultaneous On-Demand imports sorted incorrectly
    • WAV or AIFF files imported as noise if Preferences set to copy in the data at 24-bit quality
    • WMA exports corrupted if they contained metadata
    • Metadata Editor appeared before the Export window when exporting to any format
  • Effects:
    • Crash or hang using Equalization on longer tracks
    • Reverse did not reverse clip boundaries
    • Nyquist:
      • Excessive memory consumption led to slow processing or crashes
      • Values appearing in Nyquist effects text boxes were not always the default or previously entered values
      • Errors running Nyquist effects in European locales where comma used as decimal separator
    • VST effects remained in Effect menu even when re-scanned and no longer available
    • Truncate Silence produced incorrect results if silences spanned a block boundary
  • Other bug fixes:
    • Spurious "not writable/disk full" errors when saving projects
    • Playing, rendering or exporting multiple tracks led to desynchronised playback or loss of audio data
    • Crash opening Preferences when no recording and/or playback devices enabled or connected
    • Preferences window: OK button did not respond to ENTER when a tab selected in left-hand panel
    • Mixer Board solo button handling
    • (Windows) After a period launching correctly, Audacity sometimes did not come up on top at launch
    • (Mac OS X) Correctly installed Help folder could not be found
    • (Mac OS X and Linux) Output slider could affect VU playback meter which then did not reflect actual waveform volume level
    • (Linux) Undoing or redoing a label edit could cause a crash

Changes and improvements:

  • Linked audio and label tracks disabled until a future Beta version so they can be bug fixed
  • Input volume slider will be disabled if it doesn't have proper control of system slider; use the system slider instead
  • Proper support for copying/pasting label-with-audio including label text; new Edit > Paste Text to New Label menu item to paste system clipboard
  • Contrast Tool now modeless, more intuitive handling of multiple project windows, various other minor improvements

REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

GALE (AUDACITY TEAM)  Unfortunately, importing AIFFs (other than created by Audacity) may cause a freeze on some Mac systems. We have already committed a possible fix for this to our source code.

If you could help us test the fix, please go here:

http://audacity.homerow.net/index.php?dir=mac

and install the build at the bottom of the file list. Let us know if this fixes it for you.

Alternatively you could convert the AIFF files to WAV in iTunes, and then import the WAVs:

# Open iTunes > Preferences

# Click on the leftmost "General" tab

# Click the "Import Settings" button half way down on

the right

# In the "Import Using" dropdown, choose "WAV Encoder"

# Click OK and OK

# Control-click over the file you want to convert > "Create

WAV version"

MARK EVERITT  Seems to work fine for me. I'm running Snow Leopard. I also didn't have any issues with previous versions under Leopard. Have you tried deleting the preferences for Audacity in your user library? Just a guess.

JON555  This is such an awesome app. I've been using it since the 10.4 Tiger days and it's always worked flawlessly. Feature rich and free as well! My only complaints are that the UI as well as the application's icon itself looks a pretty dated/ugly. But those are minor tid-bits and should not stop anyone from downloading this fantastic app.

Keep up the good work devs!

FIREMIN  Audacity has been the audio app I keep coming back to when I want to fiddle with a file. Has worked fine for me on every 10.x OS including Snow Leopard. Imports and exports a range of formats. I've found it very useful for adjusting a files audio level so it plays louder on a phone, or even just to trim down a file to the bit I want.

JBMELBY  Version 1.3.8 will not launch on my Mac Pro running 10.5.7. V 1.3.7 works fine.

MATHEW  Same with me. 1.3.8b is useless. Going back to previous version.

MONKEYJUNKEY  Same here. This is really crap. How can you not test a version on a single up-to-date system as a developer? And if you look further below, the last release wasn't stable either.

I know, this is freeware, but even as a developer for freeware you should have a certain standard of testing a release. Really!

MACGUY_81  Audacity is a really great tool but it has always been a bit buggy when I've used it. I personally switched to Amadeus. But Audacity is definitely worth looking into!

JON55  So, is the development on this pretty much dead or what? I mean it's an awesome app, so that would be a huge shame. But it could use some work.

BOB_TM  This version (marked here as "1.3.10" - 2009.12.03) shows 1.3.10-beta in "About Audacity" - which is right?
