MACBAU  I am using this version of NETSCAPE and I thing it a good browser principally for your MAILER inside, in only app.

But his version needs updating and to be continued... if not, it will desappear.

Your big disaster is the "graphic interface", very poor and "ash", with very "face" of M$-Windows!!!

MAX  I have tried to use Netscape 7.0.2 on a G3 PowerMac, 233 MHz beige box, with OS 8.6.

It installs fine, it starts up fine. But 75% of the time, it will simply not load pages. You can click on links, or type URLs into the top bar and hit RETURN, then you see some flashing status text on the lower edge of the window, and then... NOTHING. It just sits on the page it was on.

Sometimes, if I click on the link over and over, or keep clicking the "refresh", it will suddenly load the page.

I'm on DSL, behind a router/firewall. But I seriously doubt this has anything to do with it, because I can run the older Netscape 4.79, and Opera 5, Opera 6, or iCab 2.9.7 all on this same machine without this problem. I also have another Mac Powerbook with OS 8.6 that does NOT exhibit this problem, and it's behind the same router/firewall.

Pity, because when it DOES load pages, it works a lot better than the older Netscape and correctly loads a lot of pages the older one simply won't load. Also, it has not crashed a single time in the month or so I've had it installed, although to be fair, I don't use it much because of the page loading problem.

FYI: No, I didn't disable any Javascript settings, or change the proxy page (it's still on "Direct Connection To The Internet", where it belongs).

And FWIW: Mozilla 1.2.1, which is the highest rev I can run under OS 8.6, behaves exactly the same way, which makes sense seeing as the two share almost the same entire code base.

I wish somewhere I could find a forum fix for this problem. I can't believe I'm the only one seeing it.

ANONYMOUS  TCP/IP is fragile, flaky, funky in OLD MacOS. You may need to delete your TCP/IP preferences file and/or your Internet preferences file. It's probably a good idea to also delete the whole Netscape folder in the Preferences folder (in the System Folder) BUT BE SURE to SAVE your important files from that Netscape preferences folder, like BOOKMARKS, etc.

Further, unless you really want/need a History file, you should (after doing the abovementioned steps) create a FOLDER and name it exactly as the history file in Netscape preferences is named, and then replace the History file with the History folder you have created. Why? because Netscape is infamous for having issues with the History file, corruption or whatever. And if you remember one of the cardinal rules of MacOS, "It can't replace a folder with a file, and vice versa", so Netscape THINKS it has a History file but can not write to it because it is a FOLDER, thus avoiding a classic issue with Netscape: a corrupted History file. This is a VERY old tip, and works beyond any doubt.

But remember that Netscape has a nickname, Netscape Nevergetter.

JULIAN MEDINA  This is the best browser a made comment

on netscape 6.2 to upgrade to 128 RAM

I suggest you to upgrade to that still.

It is a little slow when it starts up though. I can not use 7.1 because I do not

    have OS X.

JJMINNS  Get a grip, and get away from Netscape 6.x. It is a memory hog, very slow and unstable. (the AOL takeover). Netscape 7.01 or 7.02 works very well with Mac OS 9.1, but remember it is not mozilla based, so it takes a little getting used to. If you can find the last series of mozilla based Netscape Communicator's 4.7.8 or 4.7.9, either can be run at the same time as Netscape 7.02, and give maximum flexibility for multiple mail accounts, flash pages, QuickTime, even WindowsMedia Player 7.1. The download is called "Comm4.79_Complete_US" and is 15.4 MB, so it takes time, but you can use all type faces and sizes, .gif's, .jpg's, .pic's, .pif's backgrounds, links and targets in your mail. If a browsed page says you are out of date, switch to IE 5.1.6, or Netscape 7.02. My new OSX uses Netscape 7.1, and it is not as versatile, or flexible (more AOL interference).

New is not necessarily better. Good Luck JM

MACBAU  It's the best version for MACOS 9.x; very well! That's NETSCAPE is stable and speedy and spending less memory than "6.x" series. In my MAC with '9' it's the brwser default, in other MAC with 'X', SAFARI is the first choice.

    Ok !!

ANONYMOUS  On my Pismo running 9.1, 7.0.1 is much more stable than 7.0.2. In switching to 9.2.2, I tried 7.0.2, same deal. Switched back to 7.0.1, and all appears stable again. Curious if anyone else has noticed this.

ANONYMOUS  hmmmmm, curious i use netscape 7.01 on 9.2.2 and it is less stable than windows 98 in virtual PC(the second day i used windows in VPC i got the blue screen of death! well i guess that is to be expected in windows lol) however i now cannot see my bookmarks list, all it says is "blank menu item" wherever an item should be. And it goes down with the smallest problem, it is often causing me to restart my DV iMac(command+power on keyboard then typing "g finder" does not work like in marathon when i forget to place a player starting position or take it down another way). I downloaded iCab but it displays stuff wierd and in IE 5.1 when using msn.com those little white boxes come and up my iMac needs more restarting this is really pissing me off IE did this for as long as I have been using it and Netscape never did anything out of the ordinary before but wear out my muy muy much needed Fireball CX harddrive. Grrrrr! the Sasquatch (my nickname, i am very hairy) is very angry!

VIRG777  I had trouble opening it too (I'm on 9.2.1) but by accident I figured out you have to be online for it to work (in my case, I was logged on to AOL). I know they tell you to logoff all applications but it installed just fine as long as I was online. Now it seems to work fine. You may want to get an update to 9.2.2 though (from Apple). Hope that helps!
