DESCRIPTION
Monolingual is a program for removing unnecesary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and also works on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

I don't know about you, but I use my computer in only one (human) language--English. And I'm willing to bet that you do too, albeit perhaps not English. So why do you have a bunch of localization files for the Mac OS X operating system filling up your hard drive? Enter Monolingual -- a handy utility for reclaiming your space for more useful things...like international mp3 files, email or whatever you like.

Monolingual was written by J. Schrier and I. Stein, and is released under the GNU General Public License. Source code is available. Japanese localization by Takehiko Hatatani, Polish localization by Mariusz Ostrowski, Swedish localization by Joel Arvidsson, German localization and documentation by Alex Thurley and Ingmar Stein, Icon by Adam Betts.

GODZFIRE  I can't tell you how much I wish I saw what people were saying about this program before I used it. This program WILL render your OSX install and most programs broken when removing language files. There was no list to protect system files, so in taking out the language files, it broke them.

Right after, programs started randomly crashing or not loading. This was when I did some research more into Monolingual. I knew right then and there my OSX would probably not restart, and lo and behold, it didn't. I had to pull out a backup hard drive and restore everything from there.

Again I can't stress this enough: STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOFTWARE! The couple hundred megabytes of you get back isn't worth completely hosing your system.

JON LITTELL  This was the worst technical problem I've had in 22 years of almost daily mac usage!

An article promoted Monolingual to optimize performance. So, I tried it out last night. Several of my apps would not launch so I tried to reboot. Except I couldn't because my computer would not boot up. I had to re-install OSX Snow Leopard from the disk, then ran all the updates. I spent many, many hours today restoring applications from my TIme Capsule. Thank goodness, I had backed up yesterday afternoon!

GBBOB  I have used Monolingual for almost since the inception of OS X. It is one of the most reliable pieces of sw out there. Yes other programers has included the features into their programs but that is just more of a tribute to the original. I have even tried older versions of it and they still run because he stuck to the Apple guidelines. But one word of warning, do not strip the languages from Office 2008. If you do, you will not be able to update it anymore. Why, ask MS those schmuck do things I will never know why. Also be carful when you try to slim down your apps by removing the fat binaries. Some of them WILL not work after you do it & will no longer boot. I had to reload many apps after trying this feature so user beware. I reviewed Monolingual back in 2003 or so and gave it an outstanding review. Over the years it has evolved very nicely and I hope it stays functional for PPC users as well as Intel users. What seems like a minor utility can save gigs just in languages alone if you never ran such a program. I took office 2008 out of my app folder so it would not touch it. One addition would be nice to add in the pref. An exclusion tab where you can tell it what not to touch as it works. To me that is the only thing missing and with the problem of reducing fat binaries well that is the problem with the sw and really not Mono. That is just how the software is designed. If does not see the full pkg it will not load which is a pity and waist of space. One last thing, stability, in all my years of using it it has never crashed in the middle of an operation. It is free so how can you go wrong. End of Line... Note: Robert Lewis is a Freelance writer looking for work.

Is that a joke? Have you actually used the program? It already has this feature. RTFM!

BOOOB  Since upgrading our Intel IMAC To Snow Leopard v10.6.3, we lose our Iworks applications each time I run Monolingual v1.4.3. I called Apple Repair repeatedly until I patterned the trouble to Monolingual.

Monolingual ran trouble free on the Leopard load as it still does on my Leopard Power Book G4. I prefer an English-Only computer, but if each Snow Leopard use requires reloading and setting applications I question it's value. I saw others experienced similar troubles.

Please advise!

DSPENCER3491  Worked well for awhile but then after a few runs in a months time iTunes no longer would open and I was forced to reinstall OS X. Best advice I can give to someone using programs like this is to always back up your files!

LITTY  I ran this app on my iMac running OS 10.6.2 and Apple iWorks and other apps will not open now. I receive the prompt (s) "Files that iWorks needs are missing."

INGMARSTEIN  I haven't heard of any incompatibility with iWork, yet. Can you send your ~/Library/Logs/Monolingual.log to ingmarstein at users dot sourceforge dot net?

CHRISCHRAM  Under Snow Leopard this version of Monolingual does something to its preferences file that causes the application to crash after a number of runs. deleting net.sourceforge.Monolingual.plist and then resetting personal preferences fixes things for awhile, until next time. I just tried locking the preferences to see if I get better mileage. Time will tell.

M. LUTHER  Thanks for the feedback.

How often do you run Monolingual? I used Delocalizer on older systems and ran it once after installing all my software and was done with it. Now I'm looking for an Intel native language remover, and Monolingual seems to be the one.

JOSART  Recently App continually crashed whenever I tried to run it. Decided to delete App and all its sub folders using Appcleaner then downloading fresh Mononlingual instal. Everything back to normal. This time kept English and all sub languages. Works great on my Snow Leopard, .

MORGANG  The text on this download page says it works on Tiger, but after downloading it and trying to run it, I get a message saying it does not work with my OS version. Does it now only work for Leopard and Snow Leopard? Bummer.

CHRISCHRAM  Under Snow Leopard: This version seems to go off to never, neverland about half the times I use it. It barberpoles for a really long time, never finding any language resources to delete. When I finally give up and hit the Cancel button, the application crashes.
