DESCRIPTION
Monolingual is a program for removing unnecesary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

I don't know about you, but I use my computer in only one (human) language--English. And I'm willing to bet that you do too, albeit perhaps not English. So why do you have a bunch of localization files for the Mac OS X operating system filling up your hard drive? Enter Monolingual -- a handy utility for reclaiming your space for more useful things...like international mp3 files, email or whatever you like.

Monolingual was written by J. Schrier and I. Stein, and is released under the GNU General Public License. Source code is available. Japanese localization by Takehiko Hatatani, Polish localization by Mariusz Ostrowski, Swedish localization by Joel Arvidsson, German localization and documentation by Alex Thurley and Ingmar Stein, Icon by Adam Betts.

MISHA  Reinstall OS X. Don't do an archive/install or erase/install, just run the installer that came with your Mac (or 10.5) again. It should intelligently find/add just the files back you deleted.

YUZZ  Very easy to use application, but be careful: know what you are doing or you are in for a lot of trouble! If used correctly, you'll save a couple at least of hundred megabytes of disk space. For me it cleaned up +2GB of space by deleting unnessesary language files!

FROSTY  This program will break your copy of MS Office 2008. After you remove the various language packages, it works fine, however, you will not be able to install an MS Office updates thereafter as the installer likes to have all the language packages there. Presumably it installs updates to the various language packages as well, and when it can't find them it pukes out.

I have tried to 'fix' the updaters by following advice from various sites that detail how to override the 'check' so that you can install the updates anyway, however, the result was that MS Word crashes on launch now.

So, use with caution.

OWLY  Excellent piece of software. I just saved 5.3 GB of space (from a total used space of 43 GB) by running this program. I almost bought Xslimmer but I'm glad I found this software first! Thanks so much!

HANDYMAC  One change between v.1.3.7 and 1.3.9 (I haven't seen 1.3.8) is that the Preferences window in 1.3.7 listed only "Directories which contain language files" with the option to uncheck any of them; while v.1.3.9's Preferences also lists directories for Architectures, with System unchecked by default. Thus if v.1.3.9 is run without changing the default settings, it WILL NOT remove PPC architectures from a Universal System on an Intel Mac, which addresses the complaint in recent posts.

As a Mac support tech I set up a lot of older Macs, and find Monolingual very useful for stripping out unneeded materials on smaller hard disks. It may not be for use by rank amateurs, but the ReadMe does cover all the necessary points, and it's not the developer's fault if people don't read it -- or run the utility when they really don't know what they're doing.

CPRAGMAN, the release notes are in the ReadMe.

TRAY STEEL  If you want to remove support for all other languages accept English then just use the following command in the Terminal. You will need to supply admin password.

sudo find / -not -name English.lproj -name "*.lproj" -exec rm -r {} \;

BAMSE1  Thanks for the command line to this action. Could you please also demonstrate how to save both English *and* Swedish language resources, and delete all others. Thank you!

BIGDAVE56  Firstly, it isn't Monolingual's fault if the user doesn't read the readme file. Agree about the default setting suggestions though.

But architectures aren't the real hogs- language support is. So the only architecture I remove is G3. (I am pretty sure I won't be buying a G3 machine.) The app tells you what architecture your machine has.

On one pass, Monolingual removed one point nine GIGS. Just ran it again after the latest round of Apple updates- space reclaimed 487 MEGS, the equivalent of a complete Microsoft Orifice installation.

I uncheck all versions of English, and Spanish, and remove everything else.

If you have an older Mac with a smaller HD, this app is a must for you. Cleaning out your printers and running this app may save you 3-4GB. If you don't use GarbageBand, then run cleanapp or appzapper, several more gigs for something useful.

No problems with breaking Apple Mail or any other apps here on my G4; however, as usual, YMMV.

JOHN SAWYER CJS  Wow. I haven't used Monolingual for a couple years, but I see that even the latest version, 1.3.8, still has as its defaults, settings that will cause many of the problems that people have been complaining about for years--deleting architectures that are actually needed, etc.

Monolingual's readme file does say "you should not strip the System frameworks if you want to use Rosetta", but I can tell many people don't read the readme file. Even so, Monolingual's defaults shouldn't be set to delete things that the readme file says you shouldn't delete, as if the developer is saying "do my work for me, and change the settings to what they should be". A minor quibble is that I don't understand why the developer switches to using the term "System frameworks" in this part of the readme, about not removing architectures, since some users who don't know the terms, won't automatically know the developer is using somewhat synonymous terms.

I guess the developer knows what he's doing when he runs this app himself, so he assumes his knowledge must be being telepathically transmitted to anyone else who uses it.
