DESCRIPTION
Monolingual is a program for removing unnecesary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
I don't know about you, but I use my computer in only one (human) language--English. And I'm willing to bet that you do too, albeit perhaps not English. So why do you have a bunch of localization files for the Mac OS X operating system filling up your hard drive? Enter Monolingual -- a handy utility for reclaiming your space for more useful things...like international mp3 files, email or whatever you like.
Monolingual was written by J. Schrier and I. Stein, and is released under the GNU General Public License. Source code is available. Japanese localization by Takehiko Hatatani, Polish localization by Mariusz Ostrowski, Swedish localization by Joel Arvidsson, German localization and documentation by Alex Thurley and Ingmar Stein, Icon by Adam Betts.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

ACURAICE I have been using this program for years! Has always worked flawlessly. Not sure why the developer has released this update for Snow Leopard, when I just used this program days ago without any errors, including to remove the additional unnecessary architectures in Snow Leopard with the slightly older version. Not sure exactly whats been updated, but as for being compatible with Snow Leopard, it has been. Keep up the great work! I would have gladly paid for this program and all of your had work. TR2 Excellent utility, but my wish list: a SELECT ALL except english AND AN OTHER LANGUAG and i wish that after selecting all i want deleted ONE TIME would stay like that everytime i launched the program It's quite redundant to have to add all the checkmarks time and time again. I'd like the program to remember the last setup so we didn't have to add check marks every darned time. (Version 1.4)

THEL I can't say for certain regarding the exact settings location in Leopard or Snow Leopard - haven't been able to install them here yet - but in Tiger and earlier X OSes, removing unwanted languages from your list in the "International" prefs pane (in System Preferences) should cause Monolingual to launch each time with those languages already selected/checked. YUZZ Very easy to use application, but be careful: know what you are doing or you are in for a lot of trouble! If used correctly, you'll save a couple at least of hundred megabytes of disk space. For me it cleaned up +2GB of space by deleting unnessesary language files! (Version 1.3.9)

OWLY Excellent piece of software. I just saved 5.3 GB of space (from a total used space of 43 GB) by running this program. I almost bought Xslimmer but I'm glad I found this software first! Thanks so much! (Version 1.3.9)

CHRISCHRAM Under Snow Leopard this version of Monolingual does something to its preferences file that causes the application to crash after a number of runs. deleting net.sourceforge.Monolingual.plist and then resetting personal preferences fixes things for awhile, until next time. I just tried locking the preferences to see if I get better mileage. Time will tell. (Version 1.4.1)

FROSTY This program will break your copy of MS Office 2008. After you remove the various language packages, it works fine, however, you will not be able to install an MS Office updates thereafter as the installer likes to have all the language packages there. Presumably it installs updates to the various language packages as well, and when it can't find them it pukes out. I have tried to 'fix' the updaters by following advice from various sites that detail how to override the 'check' so that you can install the updates anyway, however, the result was that MS Word crashes on launch now. So, use with caution. (Version 1.3.9)

HANDYMAC One change between v.1.3.7 and 1.3.9 (I haven't seen 1.3.8) is that the Preferences window in 1.3.7 listed only "Directories which contain language files" with the option to uncheck any of them; while v.1.3.9's Preferences also lists directories for Architectures, with System unchecked by default. Thus if v.1.3.9 is run without changing the default settings, it WILL NOT remove PPC architectures from a Universal System on an Intel Mac, which addresses the complaint in recent posts. As a Mac support tech I set up a lot of older Macs, and find Monolingual very useful for stripping out unneeded materials on smaller hard disks. It may not be for use by rank amateurs, but the ReadMe does cover all the necessary points, and it's not the developer's fault if people don't read it -- or run the utility when they really don't know what they're doing. CPRAGMAN, the release notes are in the ReadMe. (Version 1.3.9)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE I had two versions of Monolingual as well, and noticed that one of them had the US English unchecked by default and the other left it checked but had the European languages unchecked by default. I'm not going to go find the versions, but think they are the same two you mentioned. (Version 1.3.9)

MORGANG The text on this download page says it works on Tiger, but after downloading it and trying to run it, I get a message saying it does not work with my OS version. Does it now only work for Leopard and Snow Leopard? Bummer. (Version 1.4.1)

CHRISCHRAM Under Snow Leopard: This version seems to go off to never, neverland about half the times I use it. It barberpoles for a really long time, never finding any language resources to delete. When I finally give up and hit the Cancel button, the application crashes. (Version 1.4.1)
