DESCRIPTION
Monolingual is a program for removing unnecesary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

I don't know about you, but I use my computer in only one (human) language--English. And I'm willing to bet that you do too, albeit perhaps not English. So why do you have a bunch of localization files for the Mac OS X operating system filling up your hard drive? Enter Monolingual -- a handy utility for reclaiming your space for more useful things...like international mp3 files, email or whatever you like.

Monolingual was written by J. Schrier and I. Stein, and is released under the GNU General Public License. Source code is available. Japanese localization by Takehiko Hatatani, Polish localization by Mariusz Ostrowski, Swedish localization by Joel Arvidsson, German localization and documentation by Alex Thurley and Ingmar Stein, Icon by Adam Betts.

WHAT'S NEW

KKNOPP  Said icon still changes from being all flags, to only the American one. Which is odd since most Mac users are American, and more than likely wouldn't be trashing that localization it really makes no sense.

Maybe a better icon design would make this application more appealing. Not only that, a good bit of people wouldn't take kind to pictures of the US flag being put in the trash.

I wonder what the author of said icon's reasons were for only putting the multiple flag icon in one size, and making the American flag only in the others.

I know Mr Betts (The icon designer) has on several occasions made several anti-American comments on forums before, but one wouldn't think he would be this petty. It's probably just an over-site.

That and it doesn't support 512 pixel icons.

I already fixed the problem with my version, and would be glad to send the author a copy of said icon so he can change it as well. I'd ask for no recognition or payment of course.   (Version 1.3.9)

HANDYMAC  One change between v.1.3.7 and 1.3.9 (I haven't seen 1.3.8) is that the Preferences window in 1.3.7 listed only "Directories which contain language files" with the option to uncheck any of them; while v.1.3.9's Preferences also lists directories for Architectures, with System unchecked by default. Thus if v.1.3.9 is run without changing the default settings, it WILL NOT remove PPC architectures from a Universal System on an Intel Mac, which addresses the complaint in recent posts.

As a Mac support tech I set up a lot of older Macs, and find Monolingual very useful for stripping out unneeded materials on smaller hard disks. It may not be for use by rank amateurs, but the ReadMe does cover all the necessary points, and it's not the developer's fault if people don't read it -- or run the utility when they really don't know what they're doing.

CPRAGMAN, the release notes are in the ReadMe.  (Version 1.3.9)
