ZO219  I read comments such as the one below, recommending something called Little Secrets ... and how about these referrals to Together ... and I think the Mac community doesn't deserve DEVONTech.

I am embarrassed for you.

This is purely a GUI/interface comment :

I like the new Devon ball logo and think that the developers would be wise to use it as DevonThink/Pro etc... application icon ( Just color it differently for each type of release ) and loose the shell design.

Secondly:

Please use an interface designer to revamp the application - It is so Home made that it puts a lots of potential users off - Why do so many first time users say it has a steep learning curve ? Because of the ugly interface is confusing and not user friendly. It has zero WOW factor.

Look at barebones Yojimbo - It has hordes of pleasant comments and appeals to nearly everyone on first launch.

On a GUI scale of one to ten - DEVONthink is a very poor three out of ten.

IGAUCHO  I actually think the UI is pretty good. Sure it's not as flashy as Yojimbo, but it works just fine. It's not much different from the Finder actually.

MULTIMAGO  I agree to another user about the interface style. The program is great! but the cover is not easy to use, not clear. This program is the best tool for Artificial intelligence but only in the internal engine; The user need to work smoothly! more colours/shapes associations between functions and interface. The short way from my eyes to the imput. however I love DevonThink and I hope for the new interface :)

RUSSELL  UPDATED REVIEW - I've been using Devonthink since version 1.9.1 and I think its a great product. BUT, I have a real issue with SECURITY concerning Devonthink (its non-existant). Finally, I found someone else who offers a very similiar product with a selectable encryption level called LITTLESECRET (also found in MacUpdate). At $9.00 LITTLESECRET does the samething Devonthink does PLUS it offers a peace of mind PassWord Encryption. I wish I had discovered LITTLESECRETS sooner!

T  Just noticed that this is a very memory hungry app. Around 50 MB real memory - or sometimes even higher - and 218 MB virtual memory. None of my other apps are this memory hungry!

ANONYMOUS  It's not that hungry. I find that DevonThink is typically using about 1/10 (yes, one TENTH!) the real and virtual memory that Safari is using.

*cough*

That's maybe indiciating Safari caches pretty aggressively ;-)

SJK  That's minimal, T, compared to DT Pro's memory usage on my iMac G5 with a 200MB database:

T  Great app for getting your files (pictures, movies, pdf, text, webarchives) into one database (which is an organiser, viewer and text editor). You can easily create groups and navigate your files and search for them. Filed items can be links or copied to the database folder. Really great. Though I wish that links to files that are packages (files that are in fact folders with files in them) or handled correctly - currently if you import them they show up as folder with files instead of just a link to the file.

RUSSELL GLEASON  (Later) - Their Q&A support FORUM is outstanding and my earlier comments about the "backup problems" was pre-mature (my fault). This is a must have software program!!!!

RUSSELL GLEASON  OKay, I gave in a purchased the program. And although the program itself is absolutely brillant, backing up your data and then trying to access that information from another computer cannot be done thus making this program (at this time) very DANGEROUS to use and a absolute nightmare. Your information is store in its own special data base, if your hard drive fails, or if you try to do your work from home you can't access the information you've backed up. It's a time bomb waiting to explode. My take on this is wait until they imporoved upon this program and a 7.0 version is released, then it'll be ready for the market.

DAN SWENSEN  What? This is simply not true. You want a quick and easy backup solution? Select all your folders, export them. Boom, everything there is saved as .rtf with directory structures intact. Burn all those folders to disk.

Want to reinstate them into Devonthink? Import them back. It'll be just like you left it in a couple of minutes.

I know because I've had to do it, more than once, to swap a very sizable Devonthink library across two machines. It was easy and painless.

I fear this review is FUD.

ANONYMOUS  No ratings issued at this time. Although this program appears to be next to awesome, there is only ONE thing that is holding me back from purchasing this program. You CANNOT encrypt (or lockout) any files to keep unauthorized persons from examining its contents (for example, if a person downloaded your Devonthink Database and then wanted to look at its contents at a later time, what's to stop them?). Security capability is a really big issue for me. Sorry. - Russell

KANEAL  Brilliant! I've been using it for a very long time and every upgrade makes it better but this one is a quantum leap on an already excellent app. Makes management of heaps of raw data ... manageable.

MTB  Long time user estatic with new version!

The 1.9 upgrade is bloody awesome. This is a great developer and the product is far superior to anything remotely in this category. The product spans so many categories and some which are undefined that any words to describe it fall flat.

*Huge* improvements over previous version, which was already excellent.
