JIMW  I just do not see the need to purchase such a utility. In iTunes Prefs under advanced you can switch libraries with a couple of mouse clicks. With the recording ability of Applescript or Automator it is easy enough to create a script to automate the renaming of a preference file without any serious programming experience.

DOUG ADAMS  I normally prefer not to respond to comments, since I usually don't see them. But since the comment was posted on the day iTLM was updated I happened to notice it.

I'm afraid the poster somewhat misrepresents what the software does. iTunes Library Manager does not change the location of the iTunes Music folder or copy/move it. It creates backups of the essential database files and preferences file so that, unlike iTunes' own multiple library feature, completely distinct libraries with different Preference settings can be maintained. Unlike a simple AppleScript or Automator workflow, iTunes Library Manager's has a GUI that allows users to easily change libraries on the fly while iTunes is running.

Additionally, while it's true that iTunes' multiple library feature is perfectly adequate for most users, iTunes Library Manager has had a substantial paid user base during its six years of development. When iTunes changes its database scheme, as it recently did for iTunes 8, the software must be updated in order for these legacy users to continue using it.

Finally, it isn't necessary to buy the software in order to use it. It will allow two libraries to be created and used as often as one likes.

SQUIDINC  iTunes already supports creating multiple libraries.

Just hold the option key while iTunes loads, and it'll ask you if you want to create a new library or choose one that you've already created.

Note: Unlike "iTunes Library Manager," this method doesn't store alternate copies of the iTunes preferences file. For that, the program "rooSwitch" or "rooSwitch Lite" (free) can do that.

JKRAUS  I have used iTunes library manager for years...a good app. The latest version is much flashier, however sluggish on my iMac G5 rev B. It takes between 3 and 7 minutes to save a libray and load another one. Version 4 was very much faster.

KGPAT  I Gave a glowing review earlier to the developer for his response to my problems.

With this new version I have emailed him 5 times with a problem and never received a response. I must now warn people to avoid this software because the developer dosen't seem to care about the problems users have. By the way, you must pay (again) for the new version.

DOUG ADAMS  I am normally quite diligent with email responsiveness. Regrettably, and for whatever reason, I did not receive four of the five emails this reviewer sent. The fixes in the most recent update (5.0.2) are the result of expedient replies to several users who emailed me their problems. Without their patient help with trouble-shooting and beta-testing, I never would have been able to replicate and eventually fix the errors they cited.

KGPAT  If my emails were lost in the black hole of the internet then I no doubt owe the deverloper an apology. He did email me back yesterday and a fix was posted today.

After using the update I no longer have the errors I was reporting. Everything was fixed asap.

Continued fine job and I retract my previous comments.

KGPAT  The developer of this app is great. I was one with a "Bad file name" error. When I let him know about it he went about working with me to fix it right away. His emails to me were quick and his response has been great. This is the perfect reason to support shareware.

DOUG EDDY  I have used Library Manager for several years now. I have found it to be very stable and have encountered no problems.

I did pay the upgrade fee but felt it justified because the program is well supported, does what it claims it will do, and has been a real life saver for me - my PB hard drive could not possibly fit all my iTunes cuts! But I do keep a good number on my powerbook - duplicates from my master collection - so I always can play iTunes.

The transfer files to another iTunes folder does not work smoothly, but that is my only hesitation. Everything else works great, especially the save feature.

I am very glad to have a good program that enables me to do this.

AXXLL  I have Large number of tracks and my Powerbook HD is running out of space. Is there a layman's step-by step on how to create several libraries on external Hard drive ? I really need to sort this out. I want to create library each is about 10GB.

cheers .

AUGE  Attention registered users - you must pay once more.

You cannot use your registration for this version. You must pay the the shareware fee once more. So don't replace your old version like I did.

This is not explained on the site and not here. There is just a little note in the Read Me.

JIMW  You also might want to take a look at ITunes Switcher and Libra. They also manage multiple libraries but are free. They also have mixed reviews as all in this arena seem to have. I would suggest good backups before using any of them.
