TIMCRAWF  I have been having a problem using cronnix to edit the "system" crontab. I would choose "Open System Crontab", but nothing would happen. I have searched all over and finally found the answer here

almost at the end of the page. The fix is that if the file /etc/crontab does not exist then choosing this menu item does not work. So the fix is to create it. In the terminal type.

sudo touch /etc/crontab

BUEGELFREI  Lovely little interface. My (almost hourly) backup schedule would have made a big mess in (slow) iCal, but CronniX made it fast and neat to set up. Although CronniX doesn't have yet have a functioning "intervals" scheduling tab, this was not a real hindrance. Events can be duplicated with a simple command-D, and a series of new times can be entered in seconds. Additionally, the help file includes a few pertinent Terminal tricks, and an email of thanks to the developer yielded a quick response from Sven with a couple shortcut tricks for my scheduling needs.

It's free, and it gets the job done. Works fine on OSX 10.4.8 on my 2.0 GHz DP G5 PPC.

Those looking for a GUI for rescheduling the system maintenance scripts in Tiger should probably look to the free OnyX.

PROFINITE  As the previous post noted, v3.0.1 does NOT open on my G5 tower running OS 10.4.6.

TURNTABLEROCKER  try installing xcode toolset .. should work fine then.. running here under 10.4.6 as well... ;)

TOAD  On my 10.4.6 PPC G5 it says "Cannot open as not supported on this architecture"

But :)

It dawned on me after people started asking about the maintenance tasks that there can be different views on what compatibility means. I guess most people will agree that a program is compatible if it doesn't crash and generally behaves as expected, or as it did before.

Now, from my point of view, CronniX is a program that helps configure crontabs and it still does that on Tiger. I can edit and schedule tasks as before. It is compatible.

Some of you, however, associate the maintenance tasks with cron/CronniX. Lots of people seem to use CronniX to reschedule the maintenance tasks on 10.3 and earlier. But in Tiger Apple has moved the maintenance tasks to a new scheduling system, launchd, and for those people CronniX does not work in the sense anymore that it allows rescheduling of these tasks. From this point of view CronniX is not compatible with Tiger.

DRAELREN  doesn't show any cron jobs in 10.4.6

every night at 3 am i get annoyed by them

PSEUDO TASUKI  Tiger introduced a new scheduling daemon called launchd which handles those tasks. Cron is still part of the system, however, for compatibility.

I recommend the application Lingon for editing launchd tasks.

b) Yes, it does. I use it for all of my deployed clients.

b) and it is not working for me as it did in 10.3.x. Both tasks I had setup in Panther are not executing in Tiger.

So to the original poster, your mileage may vary.

ANONYMOUS  You could attempt to remove the tasks and then re-create them if you are having problems with tiger.

The developer said it should work.

I am not sure what happens to Cron Jobs upon OS upgrade. But the Cron system sould still be similar, and working, even though Launchd also offers these features.

man cron - will explain how to use cron, if you are still having difficulties with this product, make the command inside then add them manually as cron jobs.
