BALTHAMOS  If you don't have Xcode, or are unfamiliar with programming, I have converted the application to Universal for you. All credit goes to the original developers of the program:

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Very nice of you... but the downloaded application is Intel only, according to a Getinfo command issued against the application.

BALTHAMOS  Sorry about the mixup. There was a conflict with the source files and the method of making a universal binary. I won't bore you with the details, but I fixed it so it is now truly universal. Same link.

MJL  I was really excited to see this program as a Universal Binary. But it doesn't work on my MacBook -- no sound. (On my MacBook Pro, it's great.) So for now I have to stick with Ocean Waves for pink noise.

BALTHAMOS  Was there any error output in the console? While I don't have a MB to test out, I might be able to fix it to where it might work on your machine.

MJL  Thanks for your reply! Here's what I found in the Console:

2007-10-23 20:15:38.864 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::startAudio

2007-10-23 20:15:38.970 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceSetProperty setting buffer size status

2007-10-23 20:15:40.313 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceStart status

2007-10-23 20:15:46.017 NoiseUB[402] NoiseGenerator::AudioDeviceStop status

2007-10-23 20:15:48.177 NoiseUB[402]

There are several more instances of starting and stopping, but no indications of an error. There's a ten-digit number that follows the setting buffersize and the starts and stops, the same number each time. In case it's a number in some way specific to my Mac, I've omitted it here.

BALTHAMOS  That number that is following the "status" logs is an error number. Right now, all that log is telling me is that there are errors. If the program runs without any error, the only message you should be getting is "NoiseGenerator::startAudio".

MJL  Oops -- as you may suspect, I'm relatively new to the Mac. I'll get this number when I'm at my MacBook later today and post it here.

BALTHAMOS  You wouldn't by any chance be using some other standard audio out other than the standard "Internal Speakers" or "Built-in Output" would you? If so, I would like someone else with a Macbook to confirm if it works or not using standard settings.

MJL  I'm using the regular internal speakers.

Here are some more details: if I start NoiseUB with headphones plugged in, the program produces noise. That was also the case with the original PPC version of the program. If I then unplug the headphones, I get a spluttering sort of noise from the MacBook's speakers. If I then click Silence and Noise again, I get pretty consistent noise through the internal speakers, but it's interrupted slightly by typing, by opening programs, by opening tabs in Firefox -- in short, by any activity. There are small gaps that seem related to any other activity. NoiseUB isn't using huge amounts of CPU or memory -- 2.3% CPU, 14.2 MB RAM. If I quit NoiseUB and open it again without headphones plugged in, there's no sound. Hope this info helps, and thanks for your work on this helpful program.

XORCYST  For everyone asking for a universal binary, the source code is included and can easily be compiled as a UB with Xcode. I just did it, it works fine, and took all of ~90 seconds. Just convert the included project to newer xcode (it will tell you to do so on double clicking the file), set up the new project to compile for x86 and ppc, and build the new UB.

ETHERL  When I first downloaded this, I used it for the same reason that most people use it for --- to drown out distracting noises. But then I had a baby. A very colicy baby. This program stops her crying & keeps her sound asleep better than anything I've ever seen! As soon as I turn it on & crank it up, my daughter stops crying. And it keeps her from waking up at night (I turn it down once she's asleep). It works faster than the kitchen fan/vent and it uses less electricity than the vacuum!

JGILLMAN  I used this on my PowerBook G4 all the time, but I've got a MacBook now and can't use it! Would a Universal Binary be very hard?

ACE11413  I love this program. It uses no resources, runs seamlessly in the background, and actually does what it claims. If I'm in a noisy cafe, turning on the pink noise really does cut the ambient noise in half. Also, running Noise while you're listening to music will effectively kill all noise beyond your headphones. I lurv it.

CODY  This is a godsend if you have absolutely crippling ADD. I sat and read a book last night with this in the background. Normally I have to seclude myself to focus that long.

It'd be nice to have more options. It's often remarked that pink noise sounds a lot like ocean surf, it'd be nice to oscillate the channels, vary it up a little bit, just to make for more convincing ocean sounds.
