DESCRIPTION
Bookends is a full featured and cost-effective bibliography/reference and information management system for students and professionals.

With Bookends you can easily import references (information about journal articles, books, etc.) from EndNote, and directly search and import from hundreds of online sources. Automatic searches of PubMed let you discover articles as soon as they are published. Powerful group-based searches, with static, smart, and virtual groups. Live Search lets you further refine searches as you type.

Attach any file (such as a pdf) to a reference and view or open it instantly. There are options to automatically rename and organize pdf files on-the-fly. Automatically download and attach the pdf of an article from PubMed if you have access permission. Automatically locate and attach pdfs on your hard drive.

Scan your word processor files and automatically generate finished manuscripts with properly formatted bibliographies. Access the power of Bookends directly from MS Word (including Word 2008) and Mellel. Scan Apple Pages '08 files and RTF files saved from any word processor.

Share your references over the Internet with anyone, on any platform (you, but not people who access your databases, must have a broadband connection).

WHAT'S NEW
Version 10.2:
  • Apple Pages '08 compatibility.
  • Scan RTF documents saved from Scrivener that have accented characters.
  • The enlarged view in the reference window has a Cancel button.
  • Find/Replace in Term Lists finds terms with punctuation.
  • If a bibliography with a hanging indent was sent to the Bibliography window, the hanging indent will be preserved when you copy and paste it into a word processor.
  • Files lacking file type metadata but having the extension .cgi will be recognized as text files when you select import.
  • In the Online Search window, if Import to Hits List is checked Bookends will add the imported references to the current hits list.
  • The creation of a new window with the results of a Nisus Writer Express/Pro "Scan a Doc" macro works on non-English systems (requires NWP 1.0.1 or NWE 3.0).
  • Use a keyboard shortcut to open attachments when the reference window is in front (Shift-Command-O).
  • A static group's name will temporarily highlight when a reference has been added with Command-#.
  • Bug fixes.
REQUIREMENTS

TOMECK  It seems the Sente team forces the development of Sente more than the Bookends team for Bookends at the moment. The new features of Sent 5.4.1 are interesting... Will Bookends catch up?   (Version 10.2)

OZEAN  Adding JSTOR searches is a real treat for people in the social sciences and humanities. With the new version, searching for journal articles and downloading them as PDFs has become easier by an order of magnitude or more. Great feature!  (Version 10.1.1)

ODYSSEUS  I was wrong -- in terms of overall usability, Bookends is *far* ahead of the competition, and it has widened the gap with this update, which adds an amazing number of incredibly useful features.   (Version 10.1)

ODYSSEUS  I think Sente 5 has gone beyond Bookends:

1. Sente appears to have the cleanest, best-designed interface. For example, you can do *all* your work in the main library window - no need to open up a reference window, switch between tabs within that window, etc.

2. Sente is unique in that it doesn't force you to use arcane character codes and field names in order to produce working formats -- it's all done in a graphic interface, with popups and checkboxes.  (Version 10.0.3)
