DESCRIPTION
Adobe Reader... You may not know what a PDF file is, but you've probably come across one at some point. PDF files are used by companies and even the IRS to distribute documentation and other pieces of information about their products, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is the essential interpreter. Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web, you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window. Acrobat also makes printing much more practical, by guaranteeing that the printout will look exactly like it does on your screen.

LYLEHM  Recent versions of Safari have removed "Page Setup" from the "File" menu. Options like "Paper Size" are now incorporated into the main page of the "Print" dialog box.

When a PDF opens in Safari using the Adobe plug-in, the Safari print dialog is superseded by the Adobe Reader dialog. This eliminates the ability to change paper size!

If you want to be able to use other paper sizes, and still want to have your PDFs open in Adobe Reader vs. Preview (and it's Safari plug-in), just take the following steps:

1. Remove the file /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin

(this can also be done in Adobe Reader: File:Preferences:Internet:Display PDF in browser OFF)

2. In Terminal.app (as the correct user): defaults write -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool Yes

3. In the Finder, select any PDF file and "Get Info" from the "File" menu.

4. Under "Open with" select Adobe Reader.app and click "Change All.."

PDFs will now download to your default download folder and automatically open (depending on security settings) in Adobe Reader.

LEXICON5  Why not make the above link point HERE??!!:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Macintosh

That will save people time from downloading the Intel version when they need the PPC version because they are not READING the editors note.

AAPPLE  Oddy, I double checked a number of times and this update (9.1.1) runs but the Adobe Reader 9 application cannot be selected. Is it because I am on 10.5.7? The main site says thru 10.5.6...

MISHA  Are you sure you don't already have 9.1.1? I'd try deleting Adobe Reader completely and re-installing 9.1, then try the 9.1.1 update on that fresh copy. Might be a permissions thing. Who knows.

SJHA  Does this sentence from Adobe's description inspire confidence in the Mac user?

"Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web, you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window."

JETPILOT  Adobe Reader 9 will not run my mac [PPC G4 MDD dual 1Ghz] - I get "Internal Error" message. The Adobe Reader download page has no choice for MacOS 10.5.6 so I guess they do not support the latest OS. They did not show at MacWorld. There does not appear to be a user forum to get self help - At least I could not find one. Telephone support is available weekdays only for $40 per call - Nothing free.

Conclusion: Avoid this software!!!

DP-G4-450GUY  You pulled down the Intel version by mistake.

The PPC version runs just fine on PPC-based Macs.

You can run it on 10.5.6 - but 10.5.7 has various security updates and there have been other updates since then (from Apple) that you really should apply - Adobe is staying on the legally 'safe' side of the fence by stating they want YOU to be at the maximum security level before installing their product - protection from any liability - as every software developer will state in their system requirements. It's just using good common sense.

BEZIERBOY  Confirming that it crashes on launch on an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook, OS X 10.5.6, citing "internal error".

Version 9.0.x was (and still is) useless as well, hence I use Preview or the paid version of Acrobat 8 I have.

WTF, Adobe?

**...

XENOPHILE  Bloated garbage. Reader is slow and unresponsive, with an unecessarily complex interface that is closer to Windows than OS X, and a tendency to crash occasionally. Although Adobe promotes Reader as "free," it's toolbar is larded with a flashy advertising panel that exacts payment in the form of attention.

Presumably some people are locked into using Reader due to one of its obscure features that is otherwise unavailable, which is unfortunate since nobody deserves such punishment.

Try Skim, it's lightning fast, packed with features people actually use, and has a more Mac-like interface. Skim is also rock solid and under rapid and responsive development. As a bonus, Skim is only about 3.5 MB and it's free, although I'd pay for it if I had to.

SYHARRIS  Anyone with a non-Intel(PPC) Mac who would like an older version of Adobe Reader can download it here: http://mac.oldapps.com/adobe_reader.php

Versions 8, 8.1.1 and 8.10 for Intel Macs are also available. For most of my needs Skim or PDFViewer work just fine for me. Otherwise, Adobe v.5.05 suits me. It's more sprightly than the current version.

MAGOSILVAN  Really faster than before.

To Tim and Peter: I agree it could be a bit lighter and for some tasks SKIM is better, but Adobe Reader is the best in text rendering.
