EDITOR NOTES
The 'Download Now' link yields the Intel version of the Adobe Reader Updater; see 'Related Links' below on this page for the PPC version.
DESCRIPTION
Adobe Reader... You may not know what a PDF file is, but you've probably come across one at some point. PDF files are used by companies and even the IRS to distribute documentation and other pieces of information about their products, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is the essential interpreter. Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web,
you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window. Acrobat also makes printing much more practical, by guaranteeing that the printout will look exactly like it does on your screen.

DONMONTALVO On first launch, I get "Type your password to allow Adobe Reader to make changes." Why???!!! What changes????!!!!! Geez, Adobe, can you guys get your heads out of the sand?!?!?!?! Don Montalvo, TX (Version 9.3.0)

ILGAZ It is related to "Adobe Updater" which it installs along with it or Adobe Air Framework. There is also a plugin installation/update process. We all flame Adobe but, asking your password is way much better than a SUID (check Wiki) binary which will do these things without asking it. (Version 9.3.0)

DONMONTALVO Of course, the point is why does Adobe not EXPLAIN what it is doing during the install? If it needs to write to the Local domain on the Mac OS X computer (which of course requires admin rights), it should tell the end user why. I cancelled the install because of this vague dialog box. Adobe products are no longer absolutely needed, so why bother. Don Montalvo, TX (Version 9.3.0)

ILGAZ If you install with the .pkg.zip (!!!) version here, to prevent launch services getting really confused, drag the old version (in Application) to Trash as well as the "Adobe PDF Viewer Plugin" in /Library/Internet Plugins Idiots doesn't remove the old version (450MB!) and create a windows like duplicate directory "Adobe Reader_" to your Applications folder otherwise. They can't even use Package Maker which _ordinary_ end users with large home networks/apple remote desktop use. (Version 9.3.0)

ILGAZ So, I (we) know Adobe Reader has very serious security issues lately, we trust to Adobe and we set Adobe updater "check for updates weekly" adding it to startup... Guess what Adobe updater (V6) says? "There are no updates available". If some miracle happens and some high level suit from Adobe is reading this: Please fire entire Mac team or you will end up being like GM car company. Too big to dissolve but, something will happen and you will pay for your mistakes. (Version 9.3.0)

FONTCUBERTA They didn't note the changes because they're embarrassed about lack of 64-bit support, still. (Version 9.3.0)

ILGAZ @FONTCUBERTA with current Apple scheme, if they add 64bit, they will have to ship an entire new tree of this gigantic monster and/or drop 10.4 and possibly PowerPC compatibility. If you are talking about design software, it makes sense but it doesn't really make sense for a "reader" to have 64bit version. Companies like Adobe doesn't work like "I shipped 10.6, now throw away all your working PowerPC machines and buy new Intel hardware". Reader code is closed/secret but there is an open example for you: See the latest GIMP 64bit, it runs on 10.6/Intel _only_. (Version 9.3.0)

RUBAIYAT Adobe is a bureaucratic shocker on this, with poorly named upgrades and lack of real documentation. I remember in OS9 DLing an Adobe PS Printer Driver, every link on the web and stage of archive had a different obscure name. Then when I finally got to the installer it was brilliantly named "USA"! You have to wonder at the minds behind this. You will have to step through every single update one by one to get to the latest. (Version 9.2)

PENGMAN I don't know what all the fuss is about. Downloaded with Speed Download in about 1 minute, same time to unstuff and upgraded without a hitch. 4 GB 667 MHz DDR 2 SDRAM (Version 9.2)

SANCHAI Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2 update fail to upgrade 9.1.3 to 9.2 properly. Same failure as mentioned above. The error dialog read "Update failed. The patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch. Or, you can install and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch." Adobe Reader update to 9.2 run fine. I have seen this failure in many places around the net. Caome on Adobe here you go again. New update that work please! (Version 9.2)

SUBSEA Check to see whether you’ve disabled any of the Reader plug-ins within the Adobe Reader Info pane you get when you press Command-i. I had disabled the Updater.acroplugin and was got the same error message until I re-enabled it. (Version 9.2)

ZX81 Reader failed to upgrade from within the app. It also fails to have access to the web via URLs although the EFS plugin is checked (but is marked as "non active" when I have a look at preferences...)

ALEX808 I can never work out why Adobe Reader updates are so dog slow. 6.9 - 7.4KB/sec 4 hours to download this when I could normally get it in 4 minutes and the sad thing is there's no alternate mirrors. Every site directs straight to Adobe. Eve through Adobe update it's the same speed. :/ Camera RAW 5.5 downloaded less than 2 minutes. Whats with this.... (Version 9.2)

DVH The PDF viewer plug-in still does not appear be be compatible with Safari running in the 64-bit mode - so if you want to use Adobe Reader to view PDFs within Safari - relaunch Safari running in the 32-bit mode. (Version 9.2)

HARRY G. Adobe application are no well-behaved Mac OS X citizens any more. Even the Adobe Reader is a clumsy, memory-consuming dinosaur compared to Apple's Preview. In my opinion, a Mac OS X version of Adobe Reader is completely superfluous. (Version 9.2)

TEORIC Preview has its issues, too, and sometimes disagrees with other viewers such as Adobe Reader and XPDF/Poppler (including derivatives). For instance on my computers, it messes up the fonts of nearly all PDFs generated by MS Word (Windows) – and other viewers do not. It can therefore be handy to have ‘the standard’ application available (and, yes: I know that PDF is supposed to be viewer independent). Even if we don't take the ‘standard’ issue too seriously, Adobe reader is probably the easiest to install ‘alternative’ PDF viewer for the Mac. So it is far from superfluous. Still, I agree it would not harm if usability were improved and maccified. (Version 9.2)
