EDITOR NOTES
The 'Download Now' link yields the Intel version of the Adobe Reader Updater; see 'Related Links' below on this page for the PPC version.
DESCRIPTION
Adobe Reader... You may not know what a PDF file is, but you've probably come across one at some point. PDF files are used by companies and even the IRS to distribute documentation and other pieces of information about their products, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is the essential interpreter. Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web,
you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window. Acrobat also makes printing much more practical, by guaranteeing that the printout will look exactly like it does on your screen.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 9.2:
- Address a number of customer workflow issues and security vulnerabilities while providing more stability.
REQUIREMENTS

HARRY G. Adobe application are no well-behaved Mac OS X citizens any more. Even the Adobe Reader is a clumsy, memory-consuming dinosaur compared to Apple's Preview. In my opinion, a Mac OS X version of Adobe Reader is completely superfluous. (Version 9.2)

TEORIC Preview has its issues, too, and sometimes disagrees with other viewers such as Adobe Reader and XPDF/Poppler (including derivatives). For instance on my computers, it messes up the fonts of nearly all PDFs generated by MS Word (Windows) and other viewers do not. It can therefore be handy to have the standard application available (and, yes: I know that PDF is supposed to be viewer independent). Even if we don't take the standard issue too seriously, Adobe reader is probably the easiest to install alternative PDF viewer for the Mac. So it is far from superfluous. Still, I agree it would not harm if usability were improved and maccified. (Version 9.2)

XENOPHILE Bloated garbage. Reader is slow and unresponsive, with an unecessarily complex interface that is closer to Windows than OS X, and a tendency to crash occasionally. Although Adobe promotes Reader as "free," it's toolbar is larded with a flashy advertising panel that exacts payment in the form of attention. Presumably some people are locked into using Reader due to one of its obscure features that is otherwise unavailable, which is unfortunate since nobody deserves such punishment. Try Skim, it's lightning fast, packed with features people actually use, and has a more Mac-like interface. Skim is also rock solid and under rapid and responsive development. As a bonus, Skim is only about 3.5 MB and it's free, although I'd pay for it if I had to. (Version 9.0)

SJHA Does this sentence from Adobe's description inspire confidence in the Mac user? "Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web, you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window." (Version 9.1)

DVH The PDF viewer plug-in still does not appear be be compatible with Safari running in the 64-bit mode - so if you want to use Adobe Reader to view PDFs within Safari - relaunch Safari running in the 32-bit mode. (Version 9.2)

LYLEHM Recent versions of Safari have removed "Page Setup" from the "File" menu. Options like "Paper Size" are now incorporated into the main page of the "Print" dialog box. When a PDF opens in Safari using the Adobe plug-in, the Safari print dialog is superseded by the Adobe Reader dialog. This eliminates the ability to change paper size! If you want to be able to use other paper sizes, and still want to have your PDFs open in Adobe Reader vs. Preview (and it's Safari plug-in), just take the following steps: 1. Remove the file /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin (this can also be done in Adobe Reader: File:Preferences:Internet:Display PDF in browser OFF) 2. In Terminal.app (as the correct user): defaults write -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool Yes 3. In the Finder, select any PDF file and "Get Info" from the "File" menu. 4. Under "Open with" select Adobe Reader.app and click "Change All.." PDFs will now download to your default download folder and automatically open (depending on security settings) in Adobe Reader. MUSUBANA Why would anyone want to download Adobe Reader when Skim has many more functions and runs smoother? (Version 8.1.1)

FREEBSD One reason is that Skim, like Preview, relies on pdfKit. When pdfKit has problems, so do both of these apps. Adobe Reader, for all its awful flaws, poor performance, etc., does not use pdfKit and provides *an* alternative when things go wrong. (Version 8.1.1)

PEEDEEBEE When Adobe Reader launches, it asks if you want it to be the default application for opening PDF files. I've been tempted because it has more capability than Preview, but I've always said no because it takes so long to launch. I just installed ver. 9.1.3 and it launches instantly. This time, I checked yes. (Version 9.1.3)

HARV You're sure you DL'd the correct version, e.g., PPC vs. Intel? (Version 9.1)

JOHN HUNT Yes, unless Adobe is screwed, I specifically selected the PPC version (Version 9.1)

SYHARRIS Anyone with a non-Intel(PPC) Mac who would like an older version of Adobe Reader can download it here: http://mac.oldapps.com/adobe_reader.php Versions 8, 8.1.1 and 8.10 for Intel Macs are also available. For most of my needs Skim or PDFViewer work just fine for me. Otherwise, Adobe v.5.05 suits me. It's more sprightly than the current version. (Version 9.0)

CHRISCHRAM I keep Adobe Reader on my system for that one-in-a-thousand document that doesn't play well with Preview. I can't remember the last time I used it though. (Version 9.1.3)
