DESCRIPTION
Adobe Reader... You may not know what a PDF file is, but you've probably come across one at some point. PDF files are used by companies and even the IRS to distribute documentation and other pieces of information about their products, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is the essential interpreter. Acrobat integrates directly with your Web browser, so if you come across a PDF document on the Web, you can view it directly from within your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window. Acrobat also makes printing much more practical, by guaranteeing that the printout will look exactly like it does on your screen.

SANCHAI  Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2 update fail to upgrade 9.1.3 to 9.2 properly. Same failure as mentioned above.

The error dialog read "Update failed. The patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch. Or, you can install and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch."

Adobe Reader update to 9.2 run fine. I have seen this failure in many places around the net. Caome on Adobe here you go again. New update that work please!

SUBSEA  Check to see whether you’ve disabled any of the Reader plug-ins within the Adobe Reader Info pane you get when you press Command-i. I had disabled the Updater.acroplugin and was got the same error message until I re-enabled it.

ZX81  Reader failed to upgrade from within the app. It also fails to have access to the web via URLs although the EFS plugin is checked (but is marked as "non active" when I have a look at preferences...)

Strange...

ALEX808  I can never work out why Adobe Reader updates are so dog slow. 6.9 - 7.4KB/sec 4 hours to download this when I could normally get it in 4 minutes and the sad thing is there's no alternate mirrors. Every site directs straight to Adobe. Eve through Adobe update it's the same speed. :/ Camera RAW 5.5 downloaded less than 2 minutes.

Whats with this....

DVH  The PDF viewer plug-in still does not appear be be compatible with Safari running in the 64-bit mode - so if you want to use Adobe Reader to view PDFs within Safari - relaunch Safari running in the 32-bit mode.

HARRY G.  Adobe application are no well-behaved Mac OS X citizens any more. Even the Adobe Reader is a clumsy, memory-consuming dinosaur compared to Apple's Preview. In my opinion, a Mac OS X version of Adobe Reader is completely superfluous.

TEORIC  Preview has its issues, too, and sometimes disagrees with other viewers such as Adobe Reader and XPDF/Poppler (including derivatives). For instance on my computers, it messes up the fonts of nearly all PDFs generated by MS Word (Windows) – and other viewers do not.

It can therefore be handy to have ‘the standard’ application available (and, yes: I know that PDF is supposed to be viewer independent). Even if we don't take the ‘standard’ issue too seriously, Adobe reader is probably the easiest to install ‘alternative’ PDF viewer for the Mac. So it is far from superfluous.

Still, I agree it would not harm if usability were improved and maccified.

AGG  I tried to download Adobe Reader 9.1.3 using MacUpdate.

The size of the file to be downloaded from MacUpdate is shown as 2.6MB. Clicking that link instead takes one to the Adobe Reader site. The file that was downloaded there is AdbeRdr910_en_US_i386.pkg.zip, a 44.1MB file. When I checked the zip contents, version 910 is listed, not 913 or 9.1.3, and every file in that zip has dates on or before Feb.27, 2009.

Has an earlier version mysteriously crept back into the Adobe website? Has the MacUpdate guru flipped his link? Or, do I adjust my meds and continue to use Skim?

DEMOLITION  That happened to me the last time that I tried to update Reader. This time, I updated it through the built-in updater (Help > Check For Updates...). The download is 24.1 MB.

On restarting the app, the "About Reader" box shows "Version 9.1.3".

DEMOLITION  I forgot to mention...

For those who want a tangible item to store in their software archives, then you can download the actual updater app at:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Macintosh

You'll find a list of updaters for everything from 6.0.2 up to today's 9.1.3 update, with PPC and Intel versions noted.

CHRISCHRAM  Of course if you accidentally installed version 9.1 linked from this page, you can't just apply the 9.1.3 updater. You have to go to 9.1.1, then 9.1.2, then 9.1.3. Adobe, just go die!

TEE JAY  The problem is that Adobe, unlike virtually every other software developer, chose to release patches for 9.1.1, 9.1.2, and 9.1.3 rather than re-releasing the full download of 9.1. So instead of giving new users the latest, most secure version (currently 9.1.3 as of when I'm writing this), they only give you the outdated and insecure 9.1 when you try to download the full version. This goes for both the Mac and Windows versions. It's absolutely insane, and whichever Adobe employees came up with this idea (probably to save on bandwidth costs at the expense of every new user's security) should be fired.

CHRISCHRAM  I keep Adobe Reader on my system for that one-in-a-thousand document that doesn't play well with Preview. I can't remember the last time I used it though.

PEEDEEBEE  When Adobe Reader launches, it asks if you want it to be the default application for opening PDF files. I've been tempted because it has more capability than Preview, but I've always said no because it takes so long to launch. I just installed ver. 9.1.3 and it launches instantly. This time, I checked yes.

LYLEHM  Recent versions of Safari have removed "Page Setup" from the "File" menu. Options like "Paper Size" are now incorporated into the main page of the "Print" dialog box.

When a PDF opens in Safari using the Adobe plug-in, the Safari print dialog is superseded by the Adobe Reader dialog. This eliminates the ability to change paper size!

If you want to be able to use other paper sizes, and still want to have your PDFs open in Adobe Reader vs. Preview (and it's Safari plug-in), just take the following steps:

1. Remove the file /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin

(this can also be done in Adobe Reader: File:Preferences:Internet:Display PDF in browser OFF)

2. In Terminal.app (as the correct user): defaults write -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool Yes

3. In the Finder, select any PDF file and "Get Info" from the "File" menu.

4. Under "Open with" select Adobe Reader.app and click "Change All.."

PDFs will now download to your default download folder and automatically open (depending on security settings) in Adobe Reader.

LEXICON5  Why not make the above link point HERE??!!:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Macintosh

That will save people time from downloading the Intel version when they need the PPC version because they are not READING the editors note.
