iPhoto Library Manager... Apple's iPhoto is a convenient application to use to organize and edit your digital photos, but it restricts you to having to keep all of your photos in a single, monolithic library. iPhoto Library Manager adds an additional level of control over your iPhoto collection by allowing you to keep your photos in multiple libraries and transfer them back and forth without losing your keywords, ratings, and all the other information you've worked to assign to your photos. Libraries can be split into smaller ones, or smaller libraries can be merged together into one large library. You can keep your photos on an external drive or another computer on your network, share them with other users on your machine, sync them all with your iPod, and use iPhoto Library Manager to keep track of it all.
iPhoto Library Manager offers the following FREE features:
- create new libraries
- maintain a list of multiple photo libraries and switch easily between them
- see the albums in each of your libraries at a glance
- see the size, version, and modification date of each of your libraries
- extract photos from the folder of a damaged library
- modify the permissions of your libraries, handy for sharing among multiple users
In addition, registered users of iPhoto Library Manager can:
- create shortcut files, allowing you to open your libraries directly from the Finder
- copy photo albums from one library to another, preserving all of the metadata associated with your photos, such as the title, date, rating, comments, and keywords (requires iPhoto 4.0.3 or later)
- merge multiple libraries together into a single library (requires iPhoto 4.0.3 or later)
- Collect photos from multiple libraries into a single folder for syncing with your iPod (limit 100 photos for unregistered users)
Version 3.4.3
- Duplicate photos are now correctly added to copied albums in iPhoto 4.0.3
- Fixed a problem that could cause copying/merging to fail with an error reading "Tried to create album in inactive library"
- An extra "Events" album is no longer created when merging with iPhoto 7
- "Extract Photos" command now copies video files along with photo files.
- Fixed a problem where trying to copy the "Last Import" album would result in an error
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, Apple iPhoto (some features require iPhoto 4.0.3 or later)

HUBBERBUBMAN Excellent Software! I´d like to suggest just one more essential feature that would make the whole concept complete: to extract a complete library into a folder system corresponding to the album hierarchy within the iPhotoLibrary. That would be sooo useful to me. i know it is possible because there was a PPC app around which unfortunately doesn´t work on my intelmac. Please, Mr. developer! (Version 3.4.2)

NIGEL2112 May I suggest that copying album hierarchy is the whole point? If you shot Raw photos iPLM does NOT copy both the raw and processed jpeg, only one or the other. This means that if you have raw pics and tweak them (which iPhoto then saves to the jpeg version in the Modified folder of it's library) iPLM is still incapable of moving BOTH to a new library. Unfortunately, (and please correct me if I'm wrong) this shortcoming renders iPLM not much better than iPhoto Buddy. If you need to copy between libraries just use iPB or export to a folder on the desktop, restart iPhoto (with Option key held down) to pick your other library and copy folder that to the iPhoto window. I suspect it is not possible to copy album hierarchy from library to library, or the dev would have done it. But if he can do it, he'd have something worth paying for. I wish Fat Cat success in accomplishing this. (Version 3.4.2)

NIGEL2112 Ok. I stand corrected! The email I received from the developer stated quite clearly that iPhoto Library Manager DOES indeed copy file hierarchy.

J'ai fait les opérations de transfert entre les photothèques iPhoto de mon MBP et le iMac de la maison. Déconcertant de facilité, même si pas traduit en Français. Bravo au(x) développeur(s). I made the operations of transfer between picture libraries iPhoto of my MBP and the iMac of the house. Disconcerting of ease, even if not translated into French. (Version 3.4.2)

MAGOSILVAN I didn't yet compare them, but iPhoto Buddy is FREE and should do about the same things. (Version 3.3.3)

MACSOLU You should have compared them. I did. There's NO comparison -- iPhoto Library Manager is the CLEAR winner on features. Well worth the price! (Version 3.4)

PEG DASH FAB iphoto library manager does much more than allow multiple libraries, it truly manages them. the free version has many nice features, such as inspection of library size and contents at a glance. one feature from the licensed version that i use a lot is moving a folder of photos (or an entire library) from one iphoto library to another. this is a clumsy operation if all you have is the alt key; with iphoto library manager, it's drag-and-drop. iphoto library manager is small, fast, and unobtrusive. i have used it for a loooong time and it has been completely stabile and reliable. the developers have been very responsive in tracking iphoto version changes. i replaced iphoto with iphoto library manager in my dock a long time ago. i agree that this application is worth many times its purchase price. the license that i purchased years ago has continued to remain valid across many version updates. ps: i am not connected to iphoto library manager or its developers in any way; i'm just a satisfied customer with a digital camera, an itchy trigger finger, and tens of thousands of digital images. MAVERICK You can have as many libraries as you want by just pressing "Alt" when launching iPhoto. (Version 3.2)

PEANUT BUTTER without an interface forced to remember to use alt key not nearly as slick and useable, which is the reason you have a mac instead of linux, right? (Version 3.2.5)

OZ CROSBY Worth 5 times the price to me. Between iTunes and iPhoto, the disk space on our family's 3 powerbooks runs out in a hurry. This program lets us easily put just the photos each family member wants on their computer. My main desktop easily keeps track of my tens of thousands of photos by breaking them into seperate libraries. (Version 3.0.2)

THOMAS Good application for backup, but is a pain to use. All photos are saved in numerous folders & very time consuming to sort through. (Version 3.0.2)

PEANUT BUTTER You're commments refer more to the way that iPhoto itself creates and manages data in the finder. This program, iPhoto Library Manger 3.2.5 puts a front end on iPhoto allowing users to create multiple libraries and move photos between those libraries. It's working within the framework of libraries that Apple has designed. You are looking for a different type of media management program altogether. (Version 3.2.5)

STEVE iPhoto Library Manager had it's time, but it is no longer necessary. The description states that it does something with iPhoto that you feel just should have been included - well now it is. Even if it was free, it would be unnecessary - but it's not! It's $20 for something that the program now does with no third party solutions. Save your money, buy a couple of albums on iTunes instead!
