DESCRIPTION
DropDMG allows users to quickly create .dmg archives.

Disk images pack entire folders or disks into a single compressed file, either for transport across the Internet or simply for backup. They are Apple's preferred format for distributing Mac software. Disk images are also the only archive format whose contents you can directly access in the Finder.

DropDMG is the easiest way to create Mac OS X disk images, as well as cross-platform archives. Just drag and drop a folder or file and you're done. Or, you can drag an existing disk image or archive onto DropDMG to convert it to any of the other supported formats or to burn it to CD or DVD.

DropDMG supports advanced options such as encrypted and segmented disk images, WYSIWYG layout with background pictures and custom volume icons, and rich-text license agreements in multiple languages. There are many time-saving features, and it can also be automated via AppleScript, the command-line, and Automator.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.0.1:
  • If you try to enter a serial number for DropDMG 2.x, rather than just complaining that it’s invalid, DropDMG now uses it to help you get a discounted or free upgrade and a 3.x serial number.
  • Fixed a bug where creating a disk image from the Finder’s contextual menu or keyboard shortcut sometimes didn’t work.
  • Fixed a bug where selecting a folder from the New from Folder/File… dialog didn’t work.
  • Fixed an internal error that occurred if you changed a configuration option while renaming a configuration.
  • Fixed a bug that could prevent the Automator action from working.
  • Fixed a regression where the -t argument to the dropdmg command-line tool wasn’t recognized.
  • Fixed a bug where the
  • Base Name and Volume Name fields sometimes weren’t editable when dragging and dropping onto the main window.
  • Enabled undo for the
  • Base Name and Volume Name text fields (requires Mac OS X 10.6 due to a bug in previous versions).
  • Fixed a bug where DropDMG would show two
  • Help menus after auto-updating the command-line tool.
  • Fixed a bug where the
  • Names pop-up menu text was too wide when using YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS dates.
  • Fixed the positioning of the log detail drawer.
  • Fixed a small memory leak.
  • The manual now recommends leaving space in a layout’s background picture for the Finder window’s path bar.
  • Updated the tooltips in the configuration options.
  • Updated the localizations.
REQUIREMENTS

MACTECHHEAD  Excellent tool but I do not like version 3.0.1 and here's why.

1 - The program does not remember my window size and placement settings.

2 - There is not simple way to turn off the annoying logging. With version 2 I could lock the preferences file and the log would remain empty.

3 - The activity window is not visible automatically. There is no option to keep it open and it also doesn't remember window size or locations.

4 - ADC compression support was dropped for OS X 10.0. I very rarely used it but for the rare occasion I do need it for older Carbon applications .

Due to these deficiencies I will not be upgrading to version 3.0.1

I am very happy with version 2 and cannot justify upgrading for a fee for lost functionality.

I would still rate this as a 5 star tool. But I rated features and value at 1 each for the reasons above.

MICHAEL TSAI  1. Window sizing and placement settings should be remembered automatically. No one else has reported problems here, so please contact dropdmg@c-command.com so that we can look into why this isn't working for you. Maybe it's related to locking your preferences file?

2. There's a preference to make DropDMG remove log entries older than 1 day. It may be possible to add further options here. Please contact me via e-mail to discuss this further.

3. DropDMG remembers between launches whether the Activity window is open. Once open it should stay open. This won't work if your preferences file is locked.

4. Apple changed the .dmg format so that disk images created by recent versions of Mac OS X are not readable by 10.0. Thus, there is no reason to offer ADC since any OS that can open an ADC .dmg can also open a zlib .dmg. For compatibility with 10.0 and 10.1, I recommend using the .img image formats, which DropDMG still supports.

CORPSECORPS  Excellent!

I had just noticed the minor icon snag with Snow Leopard, and here's a fixed version waiting.

ST8181  IMO this is way too expensive considering the free/donationware alternatives, such as DMGCanvas

MACTECHHEAD  As said before, this is the best of it's kind. None of the alternatives even come close to the power, flexibility or even the great compression ratios of what DropDMG offers.

Superb tool and a must have for anyone that creates a lot of disk images.

Thanks for this wonderful too!

AV  I think this is a really good app that i use in conjunction with automator to create encrypted backup dmgs to store on a server. I hope the developer comes back to it soon. It could do with an update to enhance the UI and add in some of its own automated functionality etc?

MICHAEL TSAI  If you have specific suggestions (especially about the automated functionality--DropDMG is already pretty automatable) please write to dropdmg@c-command.com

CORPSECORPS  I don't see much more to automate, and while not terribly pretty, it don't see what else the UI would need.

CORPSECORPS  Pretty much the only thing i use to archive my stuff.

It's a piece of cake to set up your presets and after that, what could possibly be easier than just dropping what you want to archive on it?

Not that it really needs anything more, but a year without an update? I hope it's not being ignored altogether!

Okay, there's free stuff around and $20 might be a wee bit steep, but i've had this since there wasn't much, and it's the Best!

MICHAEL TSAI  There hasn't been an update in a while because there are no known bugs and I'm working on a major update.

CORPSECORPS  Would be nice if this could create a .DMG which when clicked would always open with a specific view, background image, and window size intact.

AANHORN  it actually does, first you need to create a read/write image, then set the appearance to what you want, then convert it to a read only format and they will stick.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS  Ya, another review by me on this one again!

What can I say, it's the BEST of class!

Leaves off where Apple Disk Utility falls behind!

Well worth it's price if you use it daily!

Superb product Michael Tsai , keep up the great work!

I'd give it a 10 out of 5 stars!!
