DESCRIPTION
DropDMG is an easy way to create Mac OS X disk images. Just drag and drop a folder or file, and DropDMG will create an image in ".dmg", ".img", or ".smi" format--or a Tar, Zip, or StuffIt
archive. Or, you can drag an existing image or archive file onto
DropDMG to easily convert it to any of the other supported formats. DropDMG supports encryption, segmented images, and custom icons, and it can create images with rich-text license agreements in multiple languages. There are many time-saving features such as temporary preferences when you hold down Option, remembering recent folders, configurations to keep track of popular combinations of settings, and the ability to create more than one image or archive at a time. All the options are available from Automator, AppleScript, and from the
"dropdmg" command-line tool. Use DropDMG to:
- Backup your important folders (you know you should) and archive your old files.
- Burn to CD or DVD, spanning multiple discs if necessary.
- Prepare Mac OS X software for distribution.
- Compress files before sharing them.
- Create a disk image that stores a snapshot of an entire volume.
- Encrypt folders that you want to keep private.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

AV I think this is a really good app that i use in conjunction with automator to create encrypted backup dmgs to store on a server. I hope the developer comes back to it soon. It could do with an update to enhance the UI and add in some of its own automated functionality etc? (Version 2.8.5)

MICHAEL TSAI If you have specific suggestions (especially about the automated functionality--DropDMG is already pretty automatable) please write to dropdmg@c-command.com (Version 2.8.5)

CORPSECORPS I don't see much more to automate, and while not terribly pretty, it don't see what else the UI would need. (Version 2.8.5)

CORPSECORPS Would be nice if this could create a .DMG which when clicked would always open with a specific view, background image, and window size intact.

AANHORN it actually does, first you need to create a read/write image, then set the appearance to what you want, then convert it to a read only format and they will stick. (Version 2.8.5)

I had just noticed the minor icon snag with Snow Leopard, and here's a fixed version waiting. (Version 2.8.6)

MACTECHHEAD As said before, this is the best of it's kind. None of the alternatives even come close to the power, flexibility or even the great compression ratios of what DropDMG offers. Superb tool and a must have for anyone that creates a lot of disk images. Thanks for this wonderful too! (Version 2.8.6)

CORPSECORPS Pretty much the only thing i use to archive my stuff. It's a piece of cake to set up your presets and after that, what could possibly be easier than just dropping what you want to archive on it? Not that it really needs anything more, but a year without an update? I hope it's not being ignored altogether! Okay, there's free stuff around and $20 might be a wee bit steep, but i've had this since there wasn't much, and it's the Best! (Version 2.8.5)

MICHAEL TSAI There hasn't been an update in a while because there are no known bugs and I'm working on a major update. (Version 2.8.5)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS Ya, another review by me on this one again! What can I say, it's the BEST of class! Leaves off where Apple Disk Utility falls behind! Well worth it's price if you use it daily! Superb product Michael Tsai , keep up the great work! I'd give it a 10 out of 5 stars!! (Version 2.8.2)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS So far no other tool has the same power and flexibility. Not to mention for those times you need something other than a sparse image, it's very good at compressing disk images too. Smaller images than Toast or Apple's Disk Utility using zlib compression. Works flawlessly on my iMac (MacIntel) running OSX 10.4.10(11). DropDMG is well worth it's weight in gold Michael Tsai ! Great work ! (Version 2.8.1)

PXL This has become one of my favorite programs of the year. I love it. I'm hoping a future release will include and easier way to add backround images like the same feature you have for the volume icon. And icon size adjustment. (Version 2.8)
